Good budget ANC headphones

He wanted something with active noise canceling and these fit the bill. Sound quality is fine, albeit a little bass heavy. The noise canceling is okay, but not nearly as good as my Sony XM4s. Plenty fine for my son.

I noticed one day, the Headphone app started doing an update on my M4 headphones and I didn’t really care for it until I noticed that the noise cancellation feature isn’t working as great as it was on the first day! Before, these headphones would be able to filter out people’s conversation if you were at Starbucks for example. After the update, you can easily hear people’s conversation without the transparency mode. It says a lot because if you didn’t enable noise cancellation mode, it would sound exactly the same as the default mode. For a comparison, the AirPod Pros are doing a better job for noise canceling than the M4 with the new update. I used to think that the AirPod Pro’s weren’t as great as filtering out with their noise cancellation, but now I am using it since it’s doing a better job than the M4 headphones. I am currently waiting on my M4 replacement from Sony. A quick advice, turn off the update mode on the Sony app because I truly believe that the update altered the noise cancellation. I even talked to a representative, and they weren’t able to help me with the M4’s noise cancellation. I will be changing my review after when I receive the replacement unit to see if it really was a firmware issue.

Our WH-1000XM4 has a slider that you can use to adjust the length of the headband to get the best fit and for comfortable listening experience. Please note that if you put on the headset without adjusting the slider, the headset may not be positioned properly on your head, resulting in discomfort or a weak noise canceling effect.
The noise canceling function is effective in low-frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices. Check that the Adaptive Sound Control is turned off. Check the setting of the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app. When the Adaptive Sound Control is turned on, the noise canceling function may become insufficient. Noise Cancelling Doesn't Compare To Bose

I used them daily on the train and these Sony's didn't block out as much noise. They also kept trying to push the dynamic noise cancellation through the app. I'd be standing on the train and the noise would be blocked but if I walked 2 steps towards the door it would automatically switch to walking mode and the noise cancellation would change. I really didn't like that feature. I ended up returning and getting another pair of QuietComfort II

Posted .Hi Dinglemcdingleberry, Thank you for sharing your feedback. Although we cannot compare the subjective experience of noise canceling quality between the two brands we can guarantee you that the WH1000XM4 are of great quality. Good news is, we do have troubleshooting steps to fix this issue.
The Ambient Sound Mode or Noise Canceling function changes unexpectedly, or a notification sound is sometimes heard may occur in the following situations:
1. The touch sensor on the headphones was covered unintentionally (for Truly Wireless headphones with touch sensors)
2. Adaptive Sound Control is set to On
3. Notification Tone When Switching is set to On
