Decent NC, Unstable Bluetooth Connection
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A few weeks in and hundreds of hours of wear, here's my takeaways: Pros: - Excellent sound quality - Comfortable fit - I wear for 8+ hours a day and have comfort the entire time. Cons: - I bought this for the noise cancelling. Maybe I set my expectations a little too high, but the noise cancelling isn't as good as I hoped. It's still very solid, but I think brands do themselves a disservice by overselling the NC. I have the NC on max (no ambient sound allowed) according to the app, and in the gym I can still hear the music playing in the background and the clattering of weights. It does reduce it a lot, but I'd say it's only about a 50% improvement over my cheap ZVOX headphones. If you buy these headphones expecting it to mute the world around you, you're going to be disappointed. You'll need to have music playing, because if you're listening to podcasts or anything with just voice, you will be able to hear some background (depending on of course how loud the background is - my gym isn't too loud and I can still hear a fair amount). - The connection routinely cuts in and out on my iMac (but not my iPhone). I changed the bluetooth connection in the app to the lower quality sound, but more reliable connection but I still have issues (just not as often as the higher quality sound connection). This only is really an issue when watching videos on my computer. When it cuts out for a sec or two, it'll create a mismatch between the audio and the video, so they won't be in sync. Which would be really annoying if you're watching a TV show or movie.

Best Noise Canceling Headphones Out There!

Their sound quality on LDAC makes my old WH-1000XM2 sound like a 20$ pair of headphones. The addition of an EQ on LDAC makes these headphones really come alive. And the comfort of these new models is worth the upgrade in itself. I decided to make a pros and cons list here: Pros -Sound Quality -App -Wear sensor and Speak-to-chat -Touch Controls -EQ settings in LDAC -Software update speed -No noise canceling pressure Neutrals -The ANC is great, but my WH-1000XM2, at least with AC sounds and other mid-frequency sounds was a little better, but as soon as you play literally anything you hear NOTHING at all, which is better than my XM2s where you could still hear chatter at well over half volume. -Comfort, its good but the BOSE QC45 and 35ii is better Cons -These get hot fast, like really fast -Clamping force is more than I would want -Headband adjustment could be better In the end, if you are looking at Bose, Bowers and Wilkins, Sennheiser, etc these are a really good choice and well worth the upgrade from WH-1000XM2 or MDR-1000X

The headphones are designed for playback of high quality sound. When the source that you're listening to does not contain much of bass sound, the bass sound may not be audible

Please make sure you have downloaded the Sony Headphones Connect app. There you will find all sorts of tools to fine tune your headphones and maximize the volume to your liking. In the app you can customize the equalizer settings and adjust the noise canceling function.

Bring the headset and the Bluetooth device within 1 m (3 feet) from each other.
The headset automatically enters pairing mode when pairing for the first time after purchasing, initializing, or repairing the headset. To pair a second or subsequent device, press and hold the (power) button of the headset for 7 seconds or more to enter pairing mode.
When pairing a device once again after initializing or repairing the headset, you may be unable to pair the device if it retains pairing information for the headset (iPhone or other devices). In this case, delete the pairing information for the headset from the device and pair them again.
If the issue still occurs, please try resetting and initializing the headphones.

I started having an issue with the internal microphone having a feedback loop that produces a squealing noise when the Bluetooth is on, just a couple days short of two years of heavy every day use. I feel like they lasted a good amount of time being used every single day before they started to have this issue. Even with the feedback loop noise they still work perfectly when turned off using the cord with my mp3 player, just no noise canceling which I don't always need.

I like to wear headphones when I nap(on my back of course). And these have such a rich sound. And the app making these fully customizable, sound wise, is such a big plus. I love them. From that, to some other contenders, to now the XM4’s has been an excellent upgrade. They have impeccable sound quality and last very long on one charge. I’m a college student and enjoy having my ears busy when I’m studying, especially in loud places. With the addition of the noise cancelling feature, I can totally get in my zone and do what I need to do. I also appreciate the customization options in the app for the Sonys. Being able to adjust the bass, gain, etc. is something you don’t always get with headphones. Highly recommend.

This is not the experience that we want you to have. Make sure to install the latest software version of the headphones (via the Sony Headphones Connect app) for optimum performance. Keep the headset away from a microwave oven, wireless LAN device, etc. Resetting and initializing the headset may also help resolve the issue:
-Resetting the headset - Press both the (power) button and the CUSTOM button simultaneously while charging. The headset will be reset. The device registration (pairing) information is not deleted.
-Initializing the headset - Turn off the headset while the USB Type-C cable is disconnected and then press and hold the (power) button and the CUSTOM button simultaneously for 7 seconds or more. The indicator (blue) flashes 4 times, and the headset is initialized. This operation resets volume settings, etc. to the factory settings, and deletes all pairing information. In this case, delete the pairing information for the headset from the device and then pair them again.
If the issue is still not resolved or you hear buzzing, popping, crackling, or vibration noises from your Bluetooth headphones that sound different than the more common static or distortion sounds caused by environmental interference issues, please email the below information to socialsupport@am.sony.com:

|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Packaging • When you spend this much money on premium wireless headphones like the Sony WH1000XM4 you expect every aspect to reflect premium quality. The box containing the product was substantial and had a quality feel to it. An inner box slides out from the outer sleeve. Inside you find the relatively compact carrying case which can stow the accessories – USB Type C cable, Headphone cable for wired use, plug in adapter for in flight use, carrying case, as well as the headphones themselves which can be configured to nest inside in a very space saving configuration. The case itself feels quite substantial construction-wise and should protect the headphones from damage once closed up quite nicely. The case has netting on one side which can be used to stow something – I am not sure just what yet, other than a pamphlet of some sort. It also has a loop that can be used to hang the case from a hook or other means to anchor it. The zipper of the case is an attractive copper color and this in contrast to the black case sets it apart as well. • Removing the headphones from the case, you immediately notice the “soft touch” matte finish of the headphone housing. The top of the head band and ear cushions exude a quality soft feel and may be a soft leather or a nice imitation. It is akin to an expensive leather chair or high end automobile. A place you want to be. It is setting the stage for high expectations. • The overall design is clean, sleek, and attractive. Not goofy looking at all. • I am not a fan of pictures vs. words when instructing consumers the controls and set up of products. Maybe it is just me, but a video or a least a few additional words are helpful. Background • Prior to receiving my Sony headphones, I already owned two wireless in ear headphones – an inexpensive pair (about $30) and a higher end pair (about $200). Both have served their purpose. I use the cheaper pair when I am doing outside chores or something I think may cause them to fall out. Although I have installed the smaller earbud cushion on each, after extended wear I am still troubled by a bit of ear irritation. That said, when Sony’s new wireless headphones were released, I decided to give my head a break and make the leap to an over the ear design. • Although I have always liked to listen to music – trust me, I have been listening to music for a long time, I pride myself in never getting stuck in any particular time period. For example someone may say “back in my day, I used to like to listen to….”. Guess what – every day is still “my day”, and my taste for music has evolved and grown with the passing years. During my college years, we used to anxiously wait for a new release of a favorite artist. It was an event that we all gathered to and listened to intently for the subtleties of the track. Testing these headphones reminded me of those days. Testing • Similar to my in-ear phones, controls for calls, volume, and track changes can be accomplished with taps and in this case swipes. All controls worked as advertised. Phone calls were easy to manage. The app installed in my phone was relatively straight forward. • I received my headphones just before my family was leaving for a vacation on the shores of Lake Ontario near Sodus Point NY. I was able to do some initial testing in my home office. There I discovered great sound, clarity, and detail that my wireless earbuds were not able to produce as well. Forcing myself to limit my activity to just listening to the music rather than performing another task at the same time took me back to those college years when we allowed ourselves to focus on the details of the music. To sum up the experience with these phones – they were fantastic. • On the shores of Lake Ontario I set up my lounge chair and made some music selections that were on my phone. While there and listening to some of my favorite selections, I performed a noise canceling performance test. While lakeside in my chair my wife approached and was determined to speak to me. I could see her lips move, but I heard not one word. It reminded me of what my wife does not hear every day at home when I speak to her. She sees my lips move, but cannot hear (or react) to any words that I think are coming out of my mouth. Therefore these headphones pass the noise canceling test with flying colors. I continued to listen to a couple of hours of music lakeside and found it to be a great experience – comfort-wise and in terms of audio quality. Conclusion • These are great headphones which I can strongly recommend. I look forward to many hours with them in the future. But I will still use those cheap in-ear phones for dirty work, just like I will use my truck rather than my new car for the nasty stuff.

I won't get on a plane again without these

Sometimes I listened to music or podcasts via a bluetooth connection to my iPod or iPhone. Sometimes I plugged the headphones into the video console via the (included) cable with RCA jacks. And from time to time I just kept them on to minimize the noise of the plane. The headphones provided great noise cancellation in all scenarios, and the battery life was great. I'm still figuring out some of the features and functions, such as the auto-pause when you take off the headphones, and I haven't used these in a call yet, so I can't verify everything that these headphones are supposed to do. But the sound quality is great, and I won't get on a plane again without these.
