They shut off whenever I turn on the lawn mower. I shut off Ambient sound and it still takes over and stops the music. If I shut off the mower it comes back. The software is rubbish. The documentation is worse. The whole reason why I bought these was for mowing the lawn. Shouldn't be this hard.

Hi there, We are sorry to hear that the WH1000XM4 did not meet your expectations when it comes to the sound level. We'd love to troubleshoot this issue and make this a better experience for you. In the meantime, If the sound is too low even at max volume, please also try the following:
Turn up the volume of the headset and the connected device.
Connect the Bluetooth device to the headset once again.
We also recommend checking the help Guide below for additional tips for sound related issue.
      https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP0002752820.html

You may also consider checking if the firmware installed is updated as this will improve the overall performance of the WH-1000XM4. You can check the firmware version using the Headphones Connect app.

Resetting and Initializing the headphones is also a recommendation. To reset, press both the power button and the CUSTOM button simultaneously while charging. The headset will be reset. The device registration (pairing) information is not deleted.

PROS: - Outstanding sound quality! - Customizable EQ with the app with multiple profiles - Long battery life and fast charging - USB-C charging - You can manually adjust noise cancellation sensitivity - Sony's "seamless multiple-device pairing" is great and works instantly to switch from one device to your phone for incoming calls - App gives you SOOO MUCH control and options to give you the best audio experience - Voice calls are clear and crisp - When toggled in the app, music and noise cancelling stops when you start talking, so you don't need to remove your headphones for a quick/fast conversation CONS: - Can only easily switch between two devices, wish it was more - Depending on your ear size, these can start to become uncomfortable after two hours or so -- SET UP -- Setting up the XM4 headphones was super easy, especially when using the app. I did need to download and install an update for the headphones for first use, but that whole process took less than 15 minutes. You can pair multiple devices to the XM4, but only two devices can be connected at a time. I prefer to have my desktop PC as the primary device, with my phone as the second. To pair with a PC you have two options: (1) use the app to put the XM4 in pairing mode, or (2) keep holding the power button after powering on the XM4 to enter pairing mode. Once in pairing mode, you just need to open the Bluetooth settings on your PC and select the option for WH-1000XM4. That's it! -- AUDIO -- The XM4 are without a doubt the best sounding headphones I have ever used! The audio is great, regardless of what genre I am listening to. My usual music tends to be: classical, film score, electro house, progressive/alternative metal, and hard rock. Every song sounds full and crisp, especially when I'm using Sony's DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) Extreme option within the app. According to Sony, DSEE Extreme is an "Edge-AI" that "upscales compressed digital music files in real time". Your experience may be different, but for me, there was a more noticeable difference when listening to any music containing vocals. While it's not noticeable in ALL music, it's still a feature that I'm going to keep enabled. Within Sony's app is a well-executed EQ that allows you to save multiple profiles. This allows you to have a profile based on what genre you're going to be listening, further improving/enhancing an already excellent "out-of-box" audio experience. -- FEATURES -- The Sony "Headphones Connect" app is an absolute must-have if you want to get the most out of your XM4. You can create multiple EQ profiles and customize so much more: - Toggle noise cancelling, not just on/off, but adjust the intensity based on your surroundings. When you increase the intensity, you are able to enable an option that allows the XM4 microphones to detect and isolate voices. This is really helpful if someone wants to get your attention or (and I can't test this out right now due to COVID) allow you to hear announcements in the airport terminal so you don't miss any important flight updates. - "Speak-to-chat" is a setting that allows the XM4 to use its microphones to detect when you start talking, which will then pause your music/video and turn off noise cancelling, allowing you to quickly talk to someone without needing to remove your headphones (although to avoid being rude, I still take off my headphones if I need to do more than answer a quick question). - There is a "noise cancelling optimizer" that you can use to help adjust for atmospheric pressure, which can help to avoid feeling that sense of pressure on your ears when using noise cancelling with other devices. - Sony has a "360 Reality Audio" feature that allows you to take advantage of 360 audio from supported streaming services (such as TIDAL). This does require taking a few photos of your ear shape/structure and a paid service, but it's really cool and worth checking out. - "Sound Quality Mode" will allow you prioritize sound quality or connection, whichever is more important to you at any given day/time. - DSEE Extreme can be toggled on/off. I would suggest playing with it to see if you can hear a difference with your music. - You can customize the touch pad options. - You can set the XM4 to power off if you take them off your head and leave them off after a short period of time, which is a really helpful way to save battery life if you ever accidentally forget to turn them off. The right earcup has a touch-sensitive surface, allowing you to tap or swipe for different functions. Swiping up/down will adjust the volume, swiping forwards/backwards for moving through tracks, double-tap the center to pause/play music and answer/end calls, and you can place your palm on the cup to lower the volume of your music and allow for audio passthrough (temporarily cancel the noise cancellation) if you need to hear what's going on around you. Sony's "seamless multiple-device pairing" allows for the XM4 to be paired to two devices at the same time. This works great when connected to your computer and phone. When I'm listening to music on my PC, the XM4 will instantly pause my music and switch to my phone when I receive a call. A quick double-tap on the right cup will let me answer/end the call, and the XM4 will automatically switch back to my PC and resume my music. The XM4 are advertised to allow up to 30 hours of use on a full charge. This will very greatly depending on your use (specifically your volume level and if you're using noise cancellation), but I'm getting a little over 28 hours while using the majority of features enabled (noise cancelling with voice focus, speak-to-chat, DSEE Extreme) and volume around 40-50%. -- BOTTOM LINE -- The XM4 are simply amazing and I couldn't recommend them enough if you're looking for new headphones with excellent sound quality and noise cancellation. My only complaint is that since my ears are large, the XM4 can start to become a little uncomfortable after wearing them for long periods of time (close to two hours or more).

Hi SallyK, We're sorry to hear about the microphone quality issues you're having with your Sony WH1000XM4. This is definitely not the news that we would like to hear. Please allow us to help you and turn this into a better experience.
Here are a few steps you can try to improve the microphone performance:

Ensure that the headphones are connected using the correct Bluetooth profile. For calls, the headphones should be connected using the Hands-Free Profile (HFP) or Headset Profile (HSP), not the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) which is for high-quality audio playback without microphone access.

Make sure your headphones have the latest firmware update.

Try resetting the headphones or initializing them to restore factory settings. This can sometimes resolve connectivity and performance issues. For more details on how to reset the device, please refer to this link: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP0002752746.html

      Hi wind,

We regret to hear that returned the WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones due to your quality issue. This is definitely not the experience we wanted you to have with our products. We apologize for the inconvenience. These headphones work with devices that support the A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) Bluetooth profile.
Also, It will depend if the TV and laptop support Bluetooth headphones. For your future reference, make sure to update the software version of the headphones (via the Sony Headphones Connect app) for optimum performance.

The WH-1000XM4 headphones immediately goes into pairing mode when used for the first time. However, the second time you pair it, you will have to press and hold the power button for seven seconds. Check that the indicator (blue) repeatedly flashes twice in a row. You will hear the voice guidance say, “Bluetooth pairing”. Next, register the headset using the computer. After the headphones are in pairing mode, both WH-1000XM4 and LE_WH-1000XM4 appear on the computer screen. LE_WH-1000XM4 may appear first, and then a few seconds later WH-1000XM4 will appear. Wait for the WH-1000XM4 to appear on the computer screen and select it.
It may take up to one minute before WH-1000XM4 appears. For more information, please follow the recommended steps to connect the headphones to your PC depending on the operating system:

      Hi Chuckschuck,

We regret to hear that the headphones were returned because it wasn't charging. This isn't normally the case with the WH1000XM4. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. For optimum performance, it is recommended to use the supplied cable for charging. These headphones can also be charged by connecting to the USB port of a computer or a USB AC adaptor. Resetting and initializing the headphones may also help resolve the issue. We hope you tried these steps before it was returned. Thanks for sharing your review and we hope you consider Sony in your future purchase.

The Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones are superb. They sound great, feature very effective noise cancellation, and work with multiple devices nearly seamlessly. The price may seem high, but I think you're certainly getting what you pay for with them. (In the interest of full disclosure, Sony did provide me with a "Platinum Silver" WH-1000XM4 in exchange for an honest review. The opinions here are my own.) The most obvious feature of the WH-1000XM4 is the adaptive noise cancellation, which begins working as soon as you power them up. (Though, even before powering them on, I felt that the cushioned earcups already noticeably damped outside noise.) It works very well, producing a very great sense of being "isolated" from surrounding noise. While switching between the WH-1000XM4's and my old pair of noise-canceling headphones (by JBL), I noticed a surprisingly significant reduction in white noise. I had never noticed this white noise before on the old headset, but Sony's noise cancellation system made it really stand out due to its relative superiority. The system also has a good-sounding ambient mode, which helps pass through outside sound you wish to hear - like a conversation. Beyond the noise cancellation, the headphones produce great sound. I'm not an audiophile by any stretch, but I thought the out-of-box sound quality was excellent. The mobile companion app allows for a lot of further tweaking to suit different tastes. As far as the "outgoing" sound picked up by the microphone goes, everyone I talked to via phone while using this headset indicated my voice came through very clearly. But even more than the sound and noise cancellation performance, what I really love about the WH-1000XM4 are the numerous "convenience features" that Sony developed. The headphones can detect when I begin speaking, and will automatically pause whatever media is playing and engage the ambient sound mode so that I can easily hear who I'm talking with and carry on a conversation. The touch-based gestures for controlling playback and answering calls work great, and are so much more convenient that hunting for small buttons along the edges of the earphones. Furthermore, covering up the entire right earcup with a hand will momentarily engage the ambient sound mode (reducing the volume on media being played, but not stopping it). I have found the latter feature to be especially useful - for instance, when someone wants my attention, I can use this gesture to listen to them without needing to begin the conversation by speaking myself. To top it all off, I really like the multi-device support. I needed to enable this via the companion app, but once I did, I could use the app to pair the headset with multiple devices. Only two devices can be "actively connected" at a time, but additional "inactive" device pairings are remembered. (I'm unsure if there's a limit, but I got to at least 6: 2 active and 4 inactive.) To use the headset with a device it's not actively connected to, it was easy to use the companion app on my phone to select an active device and "Disconnect" it (rather than remove/unpair it), then tap an inactive pairing to connect to it. The headphones will automatically switch between the active devices, and that worked very well in my experience. I kept my phone as one of the active devices, and then alternated the second active device between a laptop and tablet. I could be listening to music on the laptop or watching a video on the tablet, and if I got a call, the WH-1000XM4's would automatically pause my media and seamlessly switch the audio to my phone. A quick double-tap on the touch-sensitive gesture pad, and I could answer the call; once done, my music or video would begin playing again and sound would automatically switch back. There is really nothing substantial I can complain about with these headphones. Since the headphones often rely on the companion app to access features, especially for activating different sets of active devices, desktop versions (for Windows and Mac) would be welcome additions to the iOS and Android versions available now. It would also be nice if Sony could make the microphone functional when the unit is powered off or charging, so that in the worst case it could just behave like a traditional plug-in headset. (It's only able to play sound in this situation, not record voice.) In summary - these are great headphones. If you want effective noise cancellation, great sound, and excellent multi-device support, Sony's WH-1000XM4 are perfect for you.

These things rule. Very comfortable and the noise cancellation is pretty great and helps a lot with misophonia. First thing I said when I took them off was “wow, my fridge is so loud!” I don’t know anything about sound quality but I think they sound nice and the charge lasts a while. Only complaint is there’s an app for it and I’m totally exhausted with needing an app for things, but you hardly have to touch it.

Hi DanielleC, We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with your WH-1000XM4. Please try adjusting the slider of the WH-1000XM4 headphones to get a more comfort fit. Please check our help guide link on "Wearing the Headset" this will provide you a more comfortable experience https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP0002928786.html

Please note that If you put on the headset without adjusting the slider, the headset may not be positioned properly on your head, resulting in discomfort or a weak noise canceling effect. The wearing detection function of the headset may also not work properly and cause music playback to stop automatically or activate the automatic power off function (the battery saving function) to automatically turn off the headset.

You get in a plane, the engine sound is muffled and you can hear your fellow passangers conversation on the back seat. Where did my music isolation go to. ANC did not work

Hi JimmyG, We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with your WH-1000XM4 headphones.

If you feel like the noise canceling of the headphones is not sufficient, please try these steps to troubleshoot.

Make sure that the noise canceling function is turned on.
Adjust the headset into a comfortable position.
The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
Check that the Adaptive Sound Control is turned off.
Check the setting of the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app. When the Adaptive Sound Control is turned on, the noise canceling function may become insufficient.
With the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app, check the setting of [Ambient Sound Control]. If it is set to [Wind Noise Reduction] or [Ambient Sound], the effect of noise canceling is reduced. Set it to the noise canceling mode.

Please note that the noise-cancelling function is effective in low-frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices. Although noise is reduced, it is not completely cancelled.

Horrible sound and horrible price. The noise cancelling made my head very woozy. Tried a $70 pair of Edifiers and they are 100x better in sound and the noise cancelling does a good job without messing with my equalibrium.

Hi MrDull, We are sorry to hear that the WH-1000XM4 did not meet all of your expectations. As a suggestion, to reduce discomfort while wearing the headphones, try adjusting the headband and the earpads properly. These headphones actually support super-soft, pressure-relieving earpads in foamed urethane evenly distribute pressure and increase ear/pad contact for a stable fit. They turn off by themselves sometimes and don’t sound as good as they cost. The touch controls don’t work for me because I have sweaty hands and the noise cancellation is good but honestly just turn up the music and you don’t even need it anymore.

We regret to hear that it's hasn't lived up to your expectations. Make sure to install the latest software version of the headphones (via the Sony Headphones Connect app) for optimum performance. You can also use the app's equalizer to tailor-fit the sound quality to your needs.

    BOSE vs SONY ANC

Bose and Sony are at war with high-end active noise cancelling headphones. I own the Bose NC700 and these are great headphones. Superior audio quality and extremely comfortable to wear. Then along came the Sony WH-1000XM4 and now I have a favorite headset. On paper Sony beats out the Bose headphones. Better battery life, additional features (removing Sony’s headset will pause the music or video), software (Sony’s work well) and price. Overall audio quality is fantastic. I can’t tell the difference between Bose and Sony. And headphones are exceptionally comfortable as well. You cannot go wrong with either headphones but I would highly recommend the Sony’s WH-1000XM4

Sony - WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise-Cancelling Over-the-Ear Headphones - Black The Sony WH-1000XM4 take over where the M3 left off. Their noise canceling feature is superb, with a function to customize it to your surroundings. I find the touch controls to be a little off for my tastes. There more like diagonally across the ear, not so much up/down/forward/aft. With the touch to pause and answer the phone more at the edges, not so much in the middle. Please understand this is not bad, it works as it should and it could easily be my hands and fingers that are not registering the touches correctly. I have similar issues with the touch screen on my phone. I think I’m touching one place and something next to it gets the signal. So I’ll just blame the touch areas on my fingers. Speak to chat needs to be setup on the phone app first but once it’s set up it work regardless of if your using the phone app or just your stereo. It works as promised for me. As far as multi device connection goes, it will connect to my 2 devices, my stereo and my phone. The Speak-to-chat works as expected on the phone but the stereo is a different story. On my phone it will pause the music when I talk and start back up about 15 seconds after I’m done talking. It will pause the music when the phone rings and you only have to couch the ear to answer the call. When your done and you either touch the ear to hang up, or the call just ends, the music starts playing again. This however does not work with my stereo. The phone does not take control of the headphones when it rings. I don’t understand why, maybe I set them up incorrectly. When Speak-to-chat is used with the stereo it “mutes” the music and you can talk. The music is still being played, it is just muted. When your done talking it unmutes, but you have missed that part of the song. I enjoyed being able to just take them off and lay them down and a minute or so later they turned off. As far as charging goes. The cord supplied is worthless, it’s 8 inches long. Why even include it? There is a standard 1/8” headphone cord included, but it seams it’s headphone only. There seems to be no MIC function with the cord. They also include an aircraft headphone adapter. I work in aircraft and I haven’t seen this setup on a seat in 10 years. It must be coming back someplace for them to include it. When charging it states 10 minutes gets you 5 hours of listening. In order for this to happen you need and adapter that can output the full 5VDC at more than an amp. Most of the normal chargers will fall on their face if asked to keep 5 volts at anything more than ¾ of an amp. I have USB power testers and could see the current draw on the charger. The voltage drop was well out of limits because of the amount of power required. Once I changed to my backup charger, I don’t use it much because it will damage things if something goes wrong, I watched it draw more than 1 amp for just under 10 minutes. That’s where their getting the 10 minutes gets to 5 hours. My last thing is the 360 sound. I could not use this because it is only available on 3 platforms that you have to pay for. So it was not tested, and I expect most people will not use it. It is 4.0 surround in your ear. They could use any number of enhancements to create this without having to pay for it. My overall thought is these are my new daily use headphones. One note, as soon as I connected them to my phone they did a 15 minute firmware update. So they may fix the 360 sound for everyone at some point.
