XM4 are still great noise cancelling headphones

My two older children have them. This is the second set I have bought for my daughter. She - literally - wore the first pair to death (24 /7 - 7 days a week.) and they fell apart after 3 years. Unless you're a teenage girl, they will probably last you even longer. These are still probably one of the best pairs of noise cancelling headphones on the market and, these days, you can often get them on sale for much cheaper than Sony's current generation leader WHXM5s. I have enjoyed my own XM4s so much that I have seen no reason to upgrade - and probably won't - until my pair finally kicks the bucket. Unless you need to have the most current shiny - these remain a great choice in HQ NC headphones.

What really sealed the deal for me though is the programmable EQ and wired connectivity option. I’m able to plug these in to either my XBX or PS5 controllers and still enjoy my custom EQ so long as the headset is powered up.

Noise cancelling is great! Battery has not run out during any of my trips and I travel a lot for work! The option of plugging them in to non Bluetooth devices is also wonderful since airplane entertainment units do not work with Bluetooth. Super comfy, have been fallen asleep with them on! Great buy!

They are so comfy, lightweight, good Bluetooth connection, and great sound. The noise canceling and ambient sound control are great features. I’m no expert in headphones, but these work just fine for what I need!

These are amazing, but Get AirPods Pro... UNLESS

And I own an old corded pair of the Bose QC 25s. I’m a videographer by trade. I work in a marketing office with two other gals, and when I need to focus, I put these on. I lost my left AirPod pro, and decided I needed a pair of dedicated noise cancelling headphones for the office and so I picked up a pair of these Sony’s. For the first week, wore them strictly in the office, and noticed I could still hear chatter through the noise cancelling. I was disappointed, but they sounded good and it was better than nothing. I heard the AirPods Max are really good at cancelling voices, and I heavily considered switching. Then I wore them to donate plasma at the end of the week! People talking everywhere, machines whirring and clicking, music and TVs all in the background. Tossed these babies on and went to a different world. It was shocking. I started to realize why they’re called the Noise Cancelling Kings. It was a whole nother level. What I learned was: calibrate them to the sound that you want to cancel. Also they cancel big noises better than isolated ones such as a single voice. I kept them instead of switching for the other AirPods. The fast charging is amazing, the noise cancelling is top of class, and they are comfortable to wear for hours on end. BUT! The reason of give 4 stars instead of 5? AirPods Pro are WAY more convenient. Put em in, and they connect automatically. Hold for noise cancelling, hold again for transparency. It just works. And it works WELL. Every time I leave the office with my Sony’s on I have to reconnect them via Bluetooth to my computer. I mean just to go to the bathroom, they completely disconnect from my laptop. Not a problem with AirPods. And AirPods don’t only connect to two devices. iPhone, iPad, laptop, girlfriends phone. All of my devices (not girlfriends also though) are seamless to connect. And so even though I bought these $300 headphones I default to AirPods Pro almost all the time. SO! If you’re an Apple user, get the AirPods Pro. UNLESS you’ve got the exact niche use case that I do. You’ve got ONE unique area that you go to professionally or as a serious hobbyist and you just need quiet while you work. In that case. In my case... Get the Sony’s.

I loaned mine to my boyfriend last night so he could watch TV while I practiced drums, and he fell asleep on the couch with them for a solid 2 hours while I banged on drums 6 feet from his head.

The best or nothing

I upgraded from the WH-1000XM2 headphones, so I was already accustomed to how good Sony's headphones are in general. Battery life, comfort, pretty much stayed the same. I noticed a nice bump in sound, as well as slightly better noise canceling.

Crystal Clear Headphones

The sound quality is amazing, the noise cancellation does exactly what it’s supposed to do (and does it with the touch of a button), it has great bass and solid high notes. The range is very impressive (I don’t have an exact measurement, but I have never lost sound/connection from all around my home while multitasking). The battery life is more than sufficient. It’s more than enough to last an entire work day before you will need to charge your headphones. Overall, a great set and worth every penny.

I listen to mostly metal and the low end is good but not overpowering while the high end is excellent. Wish they’d get a bit louder, I find around 90% volume is it’s sweet spot on an iPhone 12. App is quite good, lots of customization. Little pricey but the quality is there.

Great for frequent flyers

However they are worth the money for the sound quality and sound deadening alone. I have to travel a lot for work and these have been added as a must have when packing. When turned on you can barely hear the hum of the engine of the plane. Screaming baby, no problem with these headsets. Sitting next to a constant burper or someone that clears their throats; no worries the headphones got you. Ultimately these headphones are worth every cent.
