Very poor! People had a lotof trouble hearing me speak to them but they heard all the ambient sounds around me very well even when I was using the noise cancelling setting! Traded them in for the Blue Parrot IX-450.

These headphones suck. Noise cancellation is trash compared to the Beats I had before. Should’ve went with the Apple headphones as I’ve heard the noise cancellation on those are top notch. I hear everything at the gym. For $350, I really thought I was getting quality. Even the $150 Beats do better than this.

Hi Ummheyhellohi, We are sorry to hear that the WH-1000XM4 headphones did not meet your expectations. We'd love to troubleshoot the issue and make this a better experience for you. In the meantime, please try these steps to troubleshoot the issue.

-Make sure that the noise canceling function is turned on.
-Adjust the headset into a comfortable position.
-The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, -near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
-Check that the Adaptive Sound Control is turned off.
-Check the setting of the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app. When the Adaptive Sound Control is turned on, the noise canceling function may become insufficient.
-With the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app, check the setting of [Ambient Sound Control]. If it is set to [Wind Noise Reduction] or [Ambient Sound], the effect of noise canceling is reduced. Set it to the noise canceling mode.
-Disable Speak-to-Chat, and check whether the situation has improved.
-Check with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app whether the function of the CUSTOM button is set to [Ambient Sound Control].

Should you need further assistance, please contact us for help.

      Hi Mewaiting,

This is not the experience that we want you to have. The Speak-to-Chat mode activates when it detects the speech of the person wearing the headset, but in rare cases, it may activate in response to the voices of other people, ambient environmental sounds, transportation announcements, etc. Disable Speak-to-Chat in cases where the Speak-to-Chat mode frequently activates by accident. To disable Speak-to-Chat function, hold 2 fingers to the touch sensor control panel until you hear the voice guidance say, “Speak-to-chat deactivated”. Hi Ibeah,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding the WH-1000XM4 headphones. We sincerely apologize for the experience you've had with the sound quality and noise cancellation features. Your concerns are very important to us and we understand how crucial effective noise cancellation is for our customers.
To improve the noise cancelling feature on the WH-1000XM4 headphones, consider the following steps:

-Make sure that the noise canceling function is turned on. https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP0002752740.html

-Make sure the earpad covers your ears completely, or that the earbuds fit snug in your ears.

-Check that the Adaptive Sound Control is turned off.
Check the setting of the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Sound Connect” app. When the Adaptive Sound Control is turned on, the noise canceling function may become insufficient.

-With the “Sony | Sound Connect” app, check the setting of [Ambient Sound Control]. If it is set to [Wind Noise Reduction] or [Ambient Sound], the effect of noise canceling is reduced. Set it to the noise canceling mode.

Following these steps should help optimize the noise cancelling capabilities of your WH-1000XM4 headphones.
If the issue continues after following these steps, we suggest contacting our technical support team for further assistance. You can find their contact information here: https://us.esupport.sony.com/support/s/support-contact?language=en_US&category=headphones

Thanks for considering Sony products and for bringing this to our attention. We hope to regain your trust in the future.

    Better than QC45?

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

It would not be fair to claim one is outright better than the other - the better question is what do you prefer? It is too difficult to recommend either the QC45 or the Sony XM4s over the other. Since I am fortunate to own both - here are notes/thoughts from my own experience - Sound Quality: Sony have an impressive soundstage especially with bass-heavy music. Sonys seem to have a greater volume output and maintain a well rounded/uniform sound from low to maximum volume ranges. Sonys are well suited for all music and especially impressive with bass-heavy music. They have a warm sound and one can enjoy listening to music at volume for a longer period of time compared to the Bose. If I want to listen/feel like Im hearing something at a club, Ill go for the Sony. If I want to appreciate vocals or instruments in a song, Ill prefer the Bose. Bose have an impressive soundstage with music that emphasize vocals or live instruments - in my experience you can hear more detail and pick instruments apart from one another with the Bose. The potential downside with such clarity and emphasis on the highs may be that you experience fatigue as volume is increased towards the max with I can best describe in my non-audiophile lingo as sharp treble. Build Quality/Comfort: Materials are comparable. Bose and Sony use a combo of faux leather and plastic. Sonys have bulkier earcups but the exterior of their headphones feature more premium feeling matte textured plastic. Bose have a slimline feel/look by comparison but have a more simplistic plastic feel to the exterior of their cans. My nod on build quality go to Bose though; the Sonys have already started to creak a bit when I wear them with slight movements of the head. This slight creaky noise originate where the band connects to each earcup. While Sony might exhibit slightly more premium materials, the build construction and lack of any creaks/rattles or looseness of the Bose and the slinky feel of the latter (along with the faux leather/more compact protective case) make the QC45s the winner here. Both are equally comfortable - draw on comfort. Noise Cancellation Both are impressive. Imo, I prefer the ANC of the Sony in cases where consistent low frequency noise is apparent. In cases such as flying, the Sony drown out the lower freqs and almost cloak it with a somewhat perceptible yet satisfying hiss/white noise. Bose do a godd job too with the lower frequencies but their slight edge might be in fighting against higher freq noise such as in a coffee shop. Other Notes: Sony capacitive touch controls can be both convenient and fun but at times just as frustrating. I enjoy swiping forward and backward for songs in a playlist (Bose can only skip forward) but changing volume or pausing music is more clunky. I only want to skip one or two tracks at a time so a swipe is convenient, but changing the volume is easier with a several quick clicks instead of several swipes. The quicker the swipe can be hard for the capacitive controls. When I take the headphones off though, its nice that the Sony tech knows (80% of the time) to pause the music. EQ Control/App: Sony has a better EQ App offering more adjustability that suits your preferences. Bose have a preferable phone-call experience and ambient mode gives me greater awareness of how loud I am talking out loud when on a call. TLDR: If you have a QC35 or XM3, this is a worthy upgrade. Owners of previous Sony XM ANC headsets may notice a slight degarde in material quality but the upgrade in tech everywhere else is a fair trade. XM4s are as good as the newer QC45s and trade the uber-detailed and crisp sound sound with an impressive bass positive soundstage and warm, full and balanced sound profile. Sony wins with its warm sound, immersive soundstage and ANC. Consumers who value the foremost vocal and instrument detail at the expense of bass will want to check out the QC45 instead.

      Hi Bayc,

For optimum performance, make sure to update the software version of the headphones (via the Sony Headphones Connect app). These steps may also help when using the mic function of the headphones:

-Re-establish the connection between the source device and the headset.

Ive had these Headphones for about 6 months, they have been unreliable to say the least. They randomly start pausing then playing then pausing continuously until you turn them off. They randomly stop playing any sound at all. You have to unpair them and repair them, then set them back up with the app. The app is not very good/ user friendly. I would save $250 and get a cheap pair off amazon, theyll work just as well.

Hi Mike, We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with your WH-1000XM4 headphones. We'd love to troubleshoot the issues and make this a better experience for you. In the meantime, the pausing issue might be related to the Wearing Detection function. This function can malfunction if the proximity sensor inside the left unit housing gets fogged up or has water droplets due to condensation or humidity. Try leaving the proximity sensor part facing up until the moisture disappears. Ensure you do not touch or wipe the sensor to avoid scratches.

If the headphones randomly stop playing sound, it might be a Bluetooth connection issue. Ensure that the headphones are not too far from the connected device and that there are no obstructions or interference from other wireless devices.

If the issues persist, try resetting and reinitializing the headphones. This can often resolve connectivity and functionality problems.

For this, please check on these links to reset and initialize the headphones.

      To reset, https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP0002752743.html

      To initialize, https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP0002752746.html
This operation resets volume settings, etc. to the factory settings, and deletes all pairing information. In this case, delete the pairing information for the headset from the device and then pair them again.

If the issue still occurs, please contact us for help. Send us an email at socialsupport@am.sony.com using the format below.

As someone who felt the WH-1000XM3 (previous model) were the king of the over-ear headphones Sony has went and solidified themselves at the top of the mountain with these! Firstly, right out of the box the ease to pair these with my phone was quick and easy with the use of Sony`s Headphones Connect app. The one thing I have been wanting for a while with headphones is the ability to pair them to multiple devices, which is exactly what Sony has done with these and it works just as expected. Everything runs through the app which in the app you simply choose the devices you want the headphones to be paired with. Next getting to the actual comfort and use for some reason these felt much lighter than the prior model that I had to go and look at the weight of each and I was surprised to find the difference was only 1 gram, but these feel so light when wearing them without sacrificing comfort in the slightest. Sony was also able to not hinder the sound quality either with this lighter feeling as the sound quality still remains top-notch, which is why you can find these on nearly every site for the top-recommended headphones. The other major item that is a game-changer from the prior model is the ability of the headphones to stop playback when you take the headphones off and resume when you put them back on. This is something seen in earbuds, but finally we are getting it with the higher end over-ear headphones too. This is also extremely helpful as you don`t even have to turn them off anymore because when you take them off and put them back in the case they will automatically turn off. I do want to touch on how improved the app is as well because I have been one to constantly get annoyed that for every set of headphones, bluetooth speaker, etc I am advised to download an app, but Sony has really went above and beyond with their app that this is one that I may actually continue to keep on my phone as there are numerous features within the app that actually make it worth keeping now. The one feature I have not used much is the ability for the headphones to pause music when they detect voices around you though when I did have that feature turned on it worked exactly as advertised, which I assume is a benefit of the more microphones from prior models which also did improve call quality. The headphones still retain many of the great features from the prior model with the ridiculous battery life (30 hours) that is actually on par with what is advertised, the touch functions on the right earcup, alexa and google assistant built-in, and quick charging where 10 minutes of charging gives you a couple of hours of playback. Overall, I could write a paper about how amazing these headphones are as I love new technology and I can definitely say these are at the top of my list of current tech. For those buying their first pair of over-ear headphones you will be blown away and for those simply upgrading from the prior model the additions of the wear detection, speak to chat, multi-device connection, and the increased overall comfort are worth the upgrade in my opinion. I don`t know how Sony will ever be able to top these, but currently they own the over-ear headphone market.

Hi Oriles, We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with the Bluetooth connection of your WH-1000XM4.

Please try these steps to troubleshoot and isolate the audio drop issue that you are having with the headphones.

Set the headset to “Priority on stable connection” mode. For details, see “About the sound quality mode” using this link: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP0002752802.html

Remove any obstacles between the antenna of the connecting Bluetooth device and the antennas built into the left and right units of the headset. The antenna of each left or right unit of the headset is built into the headphones.

Bluetooth communications may be disabled, or noise or audio dropout may occur under the following conditions.

When there is a human body between the headset and the Bluetooth device
In this case, put the Bluetooth device in the same direction as the antenna of the headset to improve the Bluetooth communications.
When there is an obstacle, such as metal or a wall, between the headset and the Bluetooth device.
In places with wireless LAN, where a microwave oven is used, electromagnetic waves are generated, etc.
Where there are other wireless communication audio devices or other people nearby, such as in train station premises or on a crowded train

      Hi headphones,

We regret to hear that you're experiencing static noise when using the headphones. You may hear noise (such as a creak, click, or static) through the WH-1000XM3 wireless headphones when traveling through tunnels, or other environments in which air pressure changes easily, even if the noise canceling function is on. If this occurs, temporarily turn off the noise canceling function on the Headphones Connect app.

      Note:
This symptom has been confirmed to occur often when traveling through the following places at a fixed speed:

      -Places where the tunnel widens.
-Places where the tunnel exits into an area shaped like a ditch.

If you hear buzzing, popping, crackling, or vibration noises from your Bluetooth headphones that sound different than the more common static or distortion sounds caused by environmental interference issues, please email the below information to socialsupport@am.sony.com. Apologies if you disclosed some of this information in your review and to customer service, we just want to ensure that we have your accurate details at the time of communication.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope to speak to you to resolve this matter. We appreciate you and thanks again for shopping Sony!

      ~Ralph

Still almost the exact same headphones as the XM3. A couple additions but not enough to upgrade.
