Hi Dinglemcdingleberry, Thank you for sharing your feedback. Although we cannot compare the subjective experience of noise canceling quality between the two brands we can guarantee you that the WH1000XM4 are of great quality. Good news is, we do have troubleshooting steps to fix this issue.

The Ambient Sound Mode or Noise Canceling function changes unexpectedly, or a notification sound is sometimes heard may occur in the following situations:

1. The touch sensor on the headphones was covered unintentionally (for Truly Wireless headphones with touch sensors)
2. Adaptive Sound Control is set to On
3. Notification Tone When Switching is set to On

Thank you for the review and we're sorry to hear what happened with your headphones. Update the software of your headphones via Sony Sound Connect app. A firmware update improves the functionality and features of your device. It can provide fixes to any performance issues that may occur.
