In the premium over the ear noise cancelling headphones, it really comes down to Sony or Bose... With the WH-1000XM4... the improvements are noticeable. Improved ambient noise support, increased comfort while reducing pressure over the ear, top notch noise cancellation and this new cream color choice! Super light weight, great battery life, sleek carrying case, USB-C charging and a touch control that will have a learning curve to it. Compared to the Bose, Sony has the better bass at the price point, but you can't go wrong with either or. Thanks.

These are my first $100+ headphones and no electronic device I ever purchased has failed to live up to its price and expectations like 1000XM4. For this premium price, I was not just expecting premium sound quality but also premium bug-free features. It would be fair to call them recycled 1000XM3 with poorly developed new features. Let me break down my experience so far. Sound Quality -------------------- Excellent. I'm amazed by how well balanced these headphones are. You will probably have to adjust the EQ settings to get the maximum out of them for certain types of music. It has trademark Sony Bass which does not feel overpowered and it can get pretty loud (but definitely not the loudest headphones ever). Noise cancellation is top-notch but I did not feel a lot of difference between my friend's XM3 and my XM4. Battery ---------- Good but..... So Sony advertised that these headphones can go on for 38h without NC and 30h with NC. What they did not tell you was that you will have to turn-off all the additional features to go that far. Even with everything turned off, I have never been able to get more than 20h from these headphones. Charging is OK but they claim to offer 5 hours of charging with 10 minutes of charge. This has to be the biggest scam of this century! 10 mins of charge would probably last 1-2 hours with music. Connectivity ------------------ Nice. It is really good to finally see dual connectivity in these headphones. You can seamlessly switch between listening to music on your laptop and then switching to your phone to take a call. Connecting to multiple devices is easy but not bug-free. Many a time the Sony app on my phone will not be able to find the headphones but I found it easier to connect them to PC. My guess is that the mobile app (like many other features) is probably buggy. The range is quite decent and you can roam around within 30 ft without any issues. Calling ---------- Trash. Though Sony added more mics to XM4, the calling is still pretty bad. I understand calling has never been a forte of wireless earphones/headphones but I hate to see that my $30 Chinese Bluetooth earphones have better call quality than $350 XM4. These are notorious for picking background noises when you are on call and I wish there was some sort of ambient noise cancellation for the mic. Other Features --------------------- Design - There is literally no upgrade when it comes to the design of XM4. I mean wouldn't you be disappointed when your friend with XM3 walks up to you and just says, "Oh, I see you also got the XM3. Hmm, nice". And you're like these are XM4 and they are like "Whatever, they just look like XM3 meh". Touch/Swipe control - Oh boy, it is such a hit or miss. I have still not figured out a way to do things with 100% accuracy. Sometimes I will just keep tapping to pause the music or swipe to change the music but nothing really happens. Did I mention how slow the gesture recognition is? Wear detection - A big hit or miss. Sony shows how bad their software is with this feature. I'm pretty sure the hardware sensors, accelerometers are good but their Machine Learning models have not been trained well to detect the action. When it works it feels like such a charm but when it does not work it gets very frustrating. Comfort - Good. You can easily go 4 hours without feeling the fatigue. Sony added 15% more cushioning and I do not know how big a difference that has made. I have average-sized ears and I feel that they start putting pressure on my ears after 3-4 hours. 360 Reality Audio - An amazing feature which I will probably never get to use. Case - LOL, the case looks so not premium. Not that it matters too much but it would be nice to have a leather or a case with a premium finish for this price. Side note - When I think about NC headphones I also think about people sitting around me. Just like how I do not want to hear them when listening to my music, I do not like them hearing my music either. It was sad to see that everyone around me complained about the sound leakage from these headphones.

I've tried Bose 700 a few months ago, but decided to return because of weird connectivity issues with all of my devices and difficult controls... These headphones are simply better in everything - comfortable, easy to use, easy to make adjustments through the app, easy to switch between multiple devices (2 at the same time, but easy to have more devices and switch in a few seconds if needed), sound quality is good, battery life is very long (using every day for multiple hours, but charging 1-2 times per week). Basically, not having any complaints after a month of usage I also tried these in close to 0 degrees temperature, and they worked fine (although some touch controls were slow to respond because it was raining) All in all, it was very much worth waiting for these ones instead of settling for slightly better looking, but much worse Bose option

I bought these to replace my early model Bose noise cancelling headphones. Those used a single AAA battery to power the noise cancelling function. As one would expect, the sound quality was excellent with those old wired headphones. But after several years of frequent use, I had worn them out and needed a new pair. This time I wanted headphones with a better microphone than my old Bose model that had a little microphone mounted on the cable. I tried RAZER wired gaming headphones with a detachable microphone, but didn’t like the sound distribution of the speakers (notable lacking in midtones), the microphone’s inconsistent behavior, and the soundcard’s failure to work with my Macbook Pro. While I was reluctant to go the wireless route - because Bluetooth compresses audio thereby reducing sound quality - I decided to give these a shot because one can mute the audio simply by putting your hand up to the right ear. That is so cool! That single feature held enough "points" in my scoring to give them a try even though they were more expensive than I targeted. When I tried them out, I was pleasantly surprised to discover they delivered rich sound. And with the phone app, one can adjust the equalizer in them and turn on DSEE Extreme, which is an AI-driven feature that enhances higher tones adversely affected by Bluetooth compression. Noise cancelling is programmable, too, being easy to turn off and one. Battery life is good unless you use all of the features; then the battery life diminishes considerably. But I like the features and for now will enjoy them at the cost of frequent charging. An invisible touch on the exterior of the right earphone controls volumes, helps with making calls, and changes tracks. One of its voice features makes it easy to place hands-free calls. Another voice feature pauses audio and turns on ambient noise if you start talking. You can then talk with a person or pet. It automatically starts playing again after several seconds of no talking. How cool is all that?!! Its built-in pair of microphones for voice pick-up (it has four separate microphones to manage its noise canceling feature) met my goal of delivering my voice consistently to callers. My son reported that voice quality isn’t as good as the RAZER delivered, but the volume appeared fine. If I want good quality audio input, I use a separate USB microphone that is good - even for podcasts. So, I repeat, the microphone, which may be the weakest feature of the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones, meets my expectations. While not perfect, it doesn’t knock my rating to 4 stars. I didn’t address comfort in this review, but others report that the headband and over-the-ear pads are comfortable. I tried a $1,000 pair of headphones that I found to be more comfortable, but the price ended my interest. These are satisfactory. The headphones come with a removable cable with 3.5mm jacks at each end. One plugs into the headphones and the other plugs into an audio source. The travel case has an airplane adapter, too, for those airlines that want you to use their jack, not Bluetooth, while flying. When one plugs a jack into the headphones, they automatically turn off. However, one can re-engage active noise canceling by turning the headphones back on while wearing them. Its durability isn't top of the market, but given all of the other features, I am satisfied. The headphones come with a protective case that I intend to use when traveling. And I will handle the headphones with care. I value these headphones as worth what I paid, which was less than full retail price because I have a My Best Buy Plus membership. I saved over $100.00. The Sony XM4, also known as the Sony WH-1000XM4, is a highly acclaimed pair of wireless noise-canceling headphones. Packed with features and advanced technology, the XM4 has garnered positive reviews from both critics and users alike. Sony's industry-leading noise-canceling technology uses dual microphones to analyze and adjust ambient sound, creating an immersive listening experience. Whether you're in a noisy office, commuting, or simply seeking some tranquility, the XM4 does an excellent job of blocking out external distractions. Sound quality is another area where the XM4 excels. With powerful and dynamic audio performance, these headphones deliver a rich and detailed sound signature. The bass is deep and punchy, while the mids and highs are well-balanced, providing a satisfying listening experience across various music genres. Comfort is a crucial factor for headphones, especially during extended use, and the XM4 doesn't disappoint. The soft cushioning on the earcups and headband ensures a comfortable fit, allowing you to wear them for hours without discomfort. Another notable feature of the XM4 is its intuitive touch controls. With a few simple taps and swipes on the earcup, you can adjust the volume, change tracks, or answer phone calls without reaching for your device. Connectivity 4/5 Reason I don't recommend is that the price - performance ratio is not worth the time, unless you plan on wearing these 8+ hrs. a day I would spend less on some beats and get almost the same sound quality. Cost 1/5 - at this price point needs to have some type of GPS location built into app to keep track of these bad boys. These were lost / stolen within the first week of purchase.

Excellent pair of headphones. I've had a pair for a couple of years, and we just got my wife a pair. The headphones are very comfortable, with great sound quality and battery life. The pairing to multiple devices is also pretty seamless, most days its connected to my phone and work computer all day. It switches to whichever device is outputting sound without much issue, even pausing music from my computer when receiving a call on my phone.

    Great pair of ANC headphones

The WH-1000XM4s (M4) are a welcome improvement from their predecessors, the WH-1000XM3s (M3). Comfort is fantastic. They are lightweight, the earpads are plush and soft, and weight is distributed across the top of my head very well. The clamping force is nearly non-existent. I have read though that if your ears have a tendency to heat up quickly, then these headphones might create some discomfort in that regard; these headphones are not very breathable. Besides that comfort is top-notch. ANC, much like the M3s, is top-of-the-line. It is hard to tell if it is improved or not. This is not a bad thing of course because the M3s already have phenomenal noise cancelling so ultimately, the M4s are great for blocking out any unwanted noises. Sound has been improved. The M3s, in my opinion, were bloated and muddy. The M4s have just slightly (emphasis on slightly!) less bass. There is still a good amount of bass and still is pretty powerful. The treble has been brought up a tad bit so that there is a bit more detail without being too sharp or piercing. This results in a more neutral sound that is also pleasingly warm. Soundstage seems to be a bit wider than the M3s and is decent for ANC headphones. Put simply, the sound of these headphones very nice and I enjoy listening to these headphones very much. The mic is improved. People on the other end of calls have no problems understanding what I say; I couldn't say the same about the M3s! The noise cancellation of the mic is also very good as it blocks out most ambient noise. This makes calling people in noisy scenes very much a possibility. I absolutely love how using the EQ no longer kicks you out of the LDAC audio codec. This means I can mess around with the equalizer in the app as much as I want without having to lower the quality of my music by being forced to SBC. The speak to chat feature is actually pretty nice and convenient. It is uncanny how accurate it is in detecting your own voice! I did noticed however that even a simple murmur would activate it, so you have to be nearly dead-silent when you have this feature activated. I like to have it on when out in public in case I need to talk to someone quickly, but I turn this feature off whenever I am home. Multi-point pairing, which the M3s lacked, is here! It is great being able to seamlessly switch between 2 different devices and for power users (such as myself) this feature will be an absolute blessing. The touch controls are very accurate and I didn't have any problems getting the headphones to do what I wanted. I didn't have any missed gestures or ghost touches or anything of that sort. Battery life is great with Sony claiming 30 hours on battery life. Given my experience with these headphones, this seems just about spot on. I typically wait until 20% to charge them, but I usually get around 23-25 hours of listening in by the time I get to that point. Results will vary depending on ANC settings and how loud you set your music, but 30 hours seems to be not far off the mark. Overall I am very happy with these headphones. These are a slight but welcome improvement to the already impressive M3s. I highly recommend these for ANC headphones.

After trying the Samsung buds pro, I was very surprised how uncomfortable they were, and how there was almost no noise cancelling. I also tried the Bose 700 and the Bose QuietComfort earbuds, I was dissatisfied with the design and noise canceling level. Also their app was not working properly. After seeing that the Sony was on sale, and after reading great reviews, I bought them. I was instantly impressed. The app has many more features, and works perfectly. The noise canceling is great. One of the greatest features, is that without even having my Bluetooth turned on on my phone, I can place the back of the left ear piece against the back of my Samsung Galaxy phone, and through NFC, without the app even running, and the headphones powered off, the headphones power on, and turn on Bluetooth on my phone and connect. When you connect the included cable between the headphones and your device, for some reason the noise canceling is even better. I am going to check into this to see why this might be as it does not make sense. The app allows you to adjust the ambient sound so that you can go from complete noise canceling all the way to being able to hear cars and noises around you. Most of the options for the headphones can also be controlled by buttons or swiping on the earpieces. It's been decades since I've owned a Sony product, and this reminds me of the quality that I remember seeing in Sony products. Since I don't want to always have bluetooth on because I'm not sure of the health risks involved, my research showed that when you plug in the cable it turns off the Bluetooth in the headphones. I tested this out by trying to reconnect via Bluetooth while the cable is plugged in. The phone was unable to find the headphones, which supports what I read, namely that Bluetooth is turned off in the headphones when you plug in the cable. Luckily found these on sale and had rewards points making them a great deal with super quality. They are also comfortable, lightweight and seem to have great battery life and quick charging via USB C. The only potential problem that I've discovered is that when wearing them outside in the wind, I do hear some of the wind. However these were not mainly purchased for outdoor use.

Many years ago I had purchased a Bose Wireless Headphone set and at the time I thought they were great. The only complaints I really had about them was they clamped too hard on my head and I would get headaches and the charge didn't last long enough to be reasonable. I understand they have made them more comfortable now, but, they just didn't quite have the bass like I wanted. So I waited a long time before getting a new Wireless Headphone set. I am very happy to say that the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise-Cancelling Over-the-Ear Headphones have far exceeded my expectations. They are very light and don't clamp so hard on my head. They are very comfortable and really perform as advertised. I have worn them for periods of over 6 hours at a time. The battery life is outstanding. I charged to a full charge on initial receipt and didn't have to charge again for at least around 30 hours of use. With the simple quick push of a button on the left headphone, I can hear a voice telling me the percent of charge left. I can pair with two bluetooth devices at the same time and easily switch between them with a simple tap on the right earphone; such as my phone to answer phone calls and to listen to my computer or TV. I can easily pair to other devices and easily switch to them. The app is great, but I rarely use it as the headphones are easy to operate and understand what to do once you familiarize yourself with their operation. If someone says something to you, all you have to do is start talking and the music or sound will go on pause and you can talk and hear, then a simple tap on the right and whatever you are listening to will resume. The sound is what I like, just enough bass without booming my head out, but deep and rich with the other frequencies being just as clear as needed. The noise cancellation is outstanding in my opinion. When I get a phone call, the music is stopped automatically and with a simple tap I can answer the phone and the conversation is easily understood at both ends. I am very pleased. I highly recommend this Headphone set. Note: I use these for enjoyment. I am not a professional that can answer every question in the world about them. All I can do is give my opinion about the headphones and how much I like or dislike them. So far, I don't have any dislikes. Read the specifications for them and watch a video on YouTube about them. I am 69 years old and really enjoy these headphones.

These were an upgrade for me and the second pair of headphones (vs earbuds) I have owned. The battery life is amazing and the sound profile is good across a wide array of genres. They are comfortable for long time wear with glasses, though people with larger heads may find them tight. Unfortunately, the ANC is not fully up to par. I ride public transit and even with the sound over half up and ANC on, I can still hear the train announcements. It is also fickle and needs repeated recalibration. There's a bit of a rattle if you are on a bumpy ride that is only fixed by turning off ANC. So a bit disappointing for the price, but I am not sure how most headphones at this price point could offer full noise cancelation.

      Hi AtlasW,

We're pleased to learn that your Sony headphones have made a great upgrade for you and that their battery life, comfort even with glasses, and versatile sound profile stand out in daily use. Thank you for your thoughtful 4-star rating. It's fantastic to know you appreciate how comfortable they are for long listening sessions and the impressive battery life—both hallmarks of this model.

Also, keeping the headphones' firmware updated and using the Sony Sound Connect app to fine-tune ANC settings might also help reduce external noises and improve stability, so let us know if the recommendations work!

I RESEARCHED HEADPHONES FOR OVER 1.5 MONTHS. I WANTED BEST AUDIO QUALITY BLUETOOTH HEADPHONES, FOR HIGH QUALITY (FLAC) MUSIC. YES I KNOW, "WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT WIRELESS THEN???" CONVENIENCE AND FLEXIBILTY BETWEEN DEVICES. I NEVER HAD ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING BEFORE, AND QUITE FRANKLY I WAS SKEPTICAL. I WAS CONCERNED IT WOULD DEGRADE MUSIC DUE TO CANCELLING NOISE AT SIMILAR MUSIC FREQUENCY. SO I TRIED TO AVOID A.N.C., HOWEVER THE MAJORITY OF MY RESEARCH ALWAYS POINTED BACK TO THESE. I WAFFLED BACK AND FORTH FOR A LONG TIME, THEN THEY WENT ON SALE AT SAME LOW PRICE AS NOV 2020 BLACK FRIDAY. KICKED IN MY $100 REWARDS AND FIGURED IT WAS WORTH THE RISK FOR SUCH LOW COST. OMG, ONE OF THE BEST PURCHASES I MADE IN QUITE SOME TIME! AUDIO GREAT! ANC GREAT! BATTERY LIFE EXCELLENT!! AND COMFY FOR MY BIG HEAD!!! FOR EXAMPLE, I LISTENED TO MUSIC FOR 3 STRAIGHT HRS, 3 STRAIGHT DAYS W/ANC ON. BATTERY WAS 88%! AFTER 1 WEEK OF USE IT WAS 45%. THEN THEY SAT UNUSED FOR 1 WEEK AFTER TAKING OFF CHARGER. WHEN I TURNED ON, THEY WERE STILL 100%.  IF YOU CAN CATCH A SALE, OR MONEY IS NOT AN ISSUE, YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU PURCHASED THEM. ONLY NEGATIVE THING I CAN SAY IS THE TOUCH CONTROLS (SPECIFICALLY FOR VOLUME) IS TRICKY TO MASTER. WILL NEED MORE PRACTICE.

Best Overall ANC Headphones - Compared With Bose

I bought these for my son as a graduation gift after he tried out the Bose NC 700's first. He said: These are very comfortable headphones for long term use, but there's a bit of pressure on the crown of the head after 4+ hours. The ANC is outstanding and on par if not slightly better than the Bose headphones. I have 4 fans in my room (no AC in the dorms) and it blocked 90% of the fan noise. Battery was insanely long and I had a hard time getting these headphones to run out of juice (Bose offers 20 hours instead of 30 on these). The added smart features were all mostly useful. Multi-device pairing was a must for me, and these deliver as it seamlessly transitions between my phone and my laptop (you have to give up LDAC to enable multi-device pairing). I love how you can choose in the app which 2 devices you want to be paired. Auto pause was convenient when I needed to take them off to talk to someone. Speak-to-chat was cool but I don't see myself using it (holding 2 fingers on the touch pad toggles it on or off). Sound was great, if not a bit muddy for me since I like to emphasize vocals, but the EQ made tuning it to my style a breeze (the Bose were also muddy but the EQ wasn't available when I tried them, and I've seen that it's not as useful and even a bit buggy at times). You can change the EQ even while music is playing to hear the changes in real time. Bass was perfect out of the box but this could be tweaked too. Overall I love how it can be changed to your own music tastes. They are also loud headphones, as 50% volume was perfect for me even in my loud fan-filled room so there's a lot of headroom left over if more volume is needed (Bose were really quiet by comparison and I had to have it at 85-90% to get decent volume). The only con I found is that the mics are nowhere as good as the Bose NC 700's. They're not bad and definitely above average quality but I will miss the class leading mics on the Bose. Regardless, you will still be heard pretty clearly, I just mainly got complaints about background noise. To sum up, these are awesome headphones that should deliver on pretty much every single thing you need them too. I would only recommend the more expensive Bose if you are constantly taking phone calls with your headphones.
