Great headphones
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These headphones have fantastic sound quality, great noise cancelling, and are very comfortable to wear. I think I am semi-sensitive to noise-cancelling headphones, where having active noise cancelling (ANC) on for too long causes headaches with most headphones. While not non-existent for these headphones, I have not noticed the ANC to cause very much pain at all. They are very pleasent to wear. I reccomend!

Better than Bose but beeping makes Sony unusable
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I tried the Bose 700 and these Sony xm4 headphones. All the other reviews I think are unhelpful because they compare them setting against setting without naming the differences. The Sony 360 sound is incredible - better than Bose - but only accessible if you pay for one of the monthly services like Tidal. Otherwise, the sound quality is pretty similar. However, the pre-set equalizers (with the option to customize 2) in the Sony I liked more than Bose that has a traditional bass, mid, treble setting. If you are using this for phone calls, Bose supposedly has better call quality but I could not tell the difference. What I can say is that Sony is better at muffling background noise with the noise cancelling off. And it is easier to get to noise cancelling off - both with the button and with a quick cupping of the right ear on the Sony. Bose picks up a lot of background noise when you are on a call and you are not talking - like a can opening, running water, and opening a bag of chips 50 feet away. Even turning off the noise cancellation (which I've now learned helps both Sony and Bose pick up less ambient sound through the mics), the Bose picks all this up while the Sony muffles these sounds. TV sounds can be picked up by both. Also, both Sony and Bose allow multiple connections. However, I found that the Bose switches better between my Windows 10 PC and my Google Pixel phone. I could not get the Sony to switch as seamlessly and automatically between these two as I shifted from music to phone calls. The Bose was instantaneous. The Sony is more compact because the ear pieces fold in. It feels more flimsy than the Bose but I think this is just a sensation because the ear pieces fold and rotate. The carrying case is slimmer for the Sony. Personally, I think the Bose feels more comfortable and is softer on my ears. But I imagine for other people the Sony would be better. This is likely just personal preference. Ultimately, I returned the Sony xm4 headphones because the touch panel has a beeping sound for every touch that you cannot turn off. There are a lot of other notifications sounds that you can turn off (especially if you disable an adaptive setting feature that is aware of where and what you are doing) but not the beeps that are associated with swipe up/down/left/right. If you don't change things often or if you are going to use your phone to make adjustments, then the beep may not annoy you. For me, the beeping was a deal-breaker - even though as you can see in my review, I actually liked the Sony better in terms of sound and phone calls.

these exceeded expectations!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These headphones are great!! I should of bought them at first. I started with the Sony Ulta, but the noise cancellation and over all sound quality sounded off. I returned them fo4 the Beats Studio Pro to see if they lived up to the hype seeing several people wearing them at the gym, they were trash. The Beats sounded flat, no EQ on the android app. So i decided to spend the extra money on the Sony 4s, and i havent regretted it. I listen to all different types of Reggae, Hip Hop, R&B and these sound great compared to the rest. I almost got the JBL headphones in the same price range. But the noose cancellation is definitely a game changer. FYI most the over ear headphones are not sweat resistant. I went on Amazon and got the sweat resistant ear covers for $15, because i primarily use the headphones at the gym and i sweat alot.

The features are actually good!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It was between this and a set of Bose headphones, and for the price these were at during purchase, the amount of features were hard to say no to. In store, Bose seemed more comfortable, but I adapted to these very quickly and love them. I can wear them for hours on end and not hear my husband be loud when he games :).

Excellent wireless headphone and microphone
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought the XM3 in late July, and I was very satisfied with the sound quality, deep bass, and long battery life. But, the microphone was just ok, at least according to my friends. A week later, the XM4's were announced and I decided to return my XM3 within the return period, and purchased the XM4's instead. Same high quality sound and long battery life, but music/videos stop playing when the headphones are removed (a nice touch) and there's a significant improvement in the microphone voice quality. Yes, I had to pay a premium over the XM3, but it was definitely worth it since I'll be making a lot more video calls in the foreseeable future.

Glad I waited for these to come out!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It took me a little while to get used to controls on these and to take advantage of the many features but I love these headphones! They are comfortable, great sounding and the noise cancellation is amazing (almost scary that you can not hear anything else when it's on!) I only wear headphones when I absolutely have to, I will always prefer being tuned into my surroundings but when I need to tune out or keep the room volume down, these are the way to go. The two bluetooth device pairing is great too because I use these on my LG TV and also with my iPhone without having to pair them again. The pause feature when I remove the headphones is awesome and the motion control on the right side took a bit of getting used to but now it comes more naturally to me.

Great cans!
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This headset was an upgrade from the XM2's. The biggest changes are to active noise cancelling and build quality. After using both headsets side by side, the active noise cancelling is much better on the xm4's than the 2. This headset is also lighter and makes it easier to have on for extended sessions. Battery life does seem to have taken a hit but this can be improved by disabling "speak to chat" and "DSEE Extreme". I didn't find any noticable reduction in sound quality by turning DSEE Extreme off but did gain quite a bit of battery life. All in all these are an excellent set of headphones, you won't be disappointed. P.S. Its also awesome that you can connect multiple devices via Bluetooth and switch as needed!

The King of Mediocrity!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For the headphones that are considered the models to beat in the world of active noise cancelling Bluetooth, these are remarkably mediocre. They aren't terrible by any stretch, but they just aren't great. For the $300 price range they seem to hover around it's not unreasonable to expect more than one or two great features. After a week with them and deciding I didn't want them my wife tried them and decided neither did she. We will be returning them shortly. Their packaging is impressive. For a pair of over-ear headphones the fact that they be kept in an included hard case the size of a hardback book is really shocking. The case has room for a charger, a standard aux cable, and even includes a little adapter for airplane audio. There's also enough space for an additional dongle, like maybe a wall plug or my AirPods Pro. They were designed with travel in mind and that shows in the case. The noise cancelling is amazing. When it is set to full there is simply no noise. They don't strongly deaden the noise, they basically eliminate it. It's obvious that part of it is simply from their excellent build, since with noise cancellation turned off they sound like I've buried my head in a pillow. Turn the noise cancelling on and it's like being in an isolation chamber. But turn the noise cancelling to transparency mode and the cracks start to show. Transparency mode is, in a technical sense, piping the outside world in. In these headphones that is exactly what it sounds like. Like I'm listening to the real world through a pair of tinny speakers. It may be nice for a sentence or two listening for a pilot's announcements, but every time I tried to have a conversation with it on the delay and the poor sound quality made it utterly useless. On top of that it doesn't offer much directionality, so if I wanted to hear someone coming I could determine that they were coming but not from where or how far. The sound quality itself is tolerable, not unbearable but not particularly good. Maybe in a noisy environment the strong bass would be helpful, but both my wife and I found that it simply made the vocals harder to hear. I almost considered it an advantage when working since I could put on some music and the quality was mediocre enough that I didn't want to jam out to it. That's not exactly a great sales pitch though. "Spend $350 and you won't get distracted by enjoying your music too much." Admittedly I did not test out Sony's LDAC codec, which might have helped. But when the music format I'm already using sounds really good on other devices I own I am not going to invest in a new format for a single device. The fit wasn't good at all. I have a decently large head and found that I had to really fuss with the earcup angle to keep my inner helix from rubbing on the driver. My wife has a fairly small head and even at the smallest diameter the top of her ears were getting pushed down. That said the lightness certainly helped with long term comfort. The controls were, to be perfectly blunt, borderline unusable. With nearly everything being controlled by touching the right earcup it was a wild guess if anything would work. Can't touch too softly or too harsh. Have to place it correctly, not too high or too low. Play/pause was basically non-existent. It's supposed to be in the center, but it always took about four tries at different places for it to work. Sometimes I just hit the side of my head several times and hoped for the best. Volume controls were uselessly incremental, taking several swipes to adjust to any meaningful degree. Turning the noise cancelling on or off via the button on the left ear cup was a guess, particularly because a long press on that button recalibrated the noise cancelling mode. I suppose perspective is everything. If someone had never spent a few hundred dollars on headphones before these would have been great. And maybe if someone is constantly traveling the small size and travel features would be pleasant, though I think you could do better with a pair of active noise cancelling earbuds if size is really a concern. The rest of it is so mediocre or unusable that I couldn't imagine a situation where I'd want to bother, certainly not for $300+. Maybe they'd be an easier recommendation at the $170 range.
