I contemplated getting the AirPods Max but this has just as good sound if not better, good battery life, and much lighter while wearing. Only thing I wish it had was easier connection and device switching that you get with Apple headphones.

The noise canceling is so amazing you can’t hear a single thing once you have them on. They’re comfortable and light weight. Plus the battery last a very long time. I've had the previous XM3 model for over six years and the only reason I had to finally move on from it was due to extreme wear and tear. So I thought I'd upgrade this time. The XM4 is, for me, a downgrade. Everything I cared about is worse. The distance from my computer before the sounds gets choppy and cuts out has lessened. The headset is finicky with which device it wants to connect to. Sometimes I'll have to actually disconnect one device so that another can join instead. But then other times, it's perfectly fine? There was also this awful feature where it would attempt to auto detect my surrounds and turn on and off noise cancelling at will. This is on by default. I will admit that the auto shutdown after a few minutes of detecting it's no longer on my head is nice. Just wish I could adjust how longe before it does that. Wish it were 10 mins. I honestly wish I just tried to get the same model instead of "upgrading".

Regarding the issues you mentioned, here are a few quick things you can try to make the headset behave a bit better:
-In the Sony | Sound Connect app, go to the Sound tab and switch the Bluetooth Connection Quality to "Priority on Stable Connection." This should help with the choppiness and range.
-In the app, you can disable the "Adaptive Sound Control" feature which changes your settings based on your location or movement.
-You can actually adjust or disable the auto-off sensor in the "System" tab of the app to give you more control over when they shut down.

GREAT noise cancellation in loud environments

I started off with the regular AirPods, then got the AirPods Pro. The AirPods Pro have a good noise cancelling for everyday use but these Sony’s are impressive! The noise cancellation is the best I have ever used. I have an auto detailing business and always use them when I am working. They do a really good job at noise cancellation, my gas pressure washer, vacuum etc are very loud. These headphones do wonders when it comes canceling all that noise. If these can handle my loud working environment I’m sure it they can handle whatever type of environment you are in. I have seen the decibels get up to 100 according to my Apple Watch and these headphones make the noise very tolerable. I can still hear my machines working but at maybe 20% of the actual noise they make. The battery life is great! I got these on sale for 279. I have seen that sale happen often. They are worth the price! The Sony app is also easy to use and you can have these headphones paired with 2 devices. The controls on the side of headphones are easy to use and took me a bit to get used to since its a swipe motion instead of a clicks (airpods).

They come with a case and have excellent battery life. You can connect 2 devices to them simultaneously. Very light weight and comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. Noise cancelling is some of the best and the app offers tons of customization options.

If only it could cancel airplane engine noise!

It's an excellent set for around the house, making phone calls it's comfortable as can be but when it's tested against the Bose 700 on a real airplane it's not the device you're going to want for air travel! But I actually prefer it around the house because it's so darn comfortable! I walked into return it but I realized I really like it for home phone calls and just walking around the house using it with the phone, tv, computer. Sound quality is excellent I can see why there's so much hype about it. Noise cancellation for walk around the block and to function around the house is perfect! And it's actually really great in traffic. Where it's not great is on an airplane. That's it I'm going to give it five stars with the caveat that noise cancellation on an airplane could be much much better! It's actually superb for phone conversations picks up right away and everyone says it's super clear and the reception is super clear. So, yes, five stars because if you're not flying it's definitely five stars.

40mm drivers still here, unlike on the XM5s (30mm)

These XM4s are 40mm and if you prefer punchier and fuller bass I'd stick to the XM4s. Battery life, comfort and sound are amazing here. I don't see much reason to "upgrade" to the new XM5s? ANC performance is stellar. You can find third party ear cups too. That's a major contributing factor for me when buying premium headphones. If I can easily replace the ear cups. XM5s are not worth the upgrade. These XM4s are still an amazing value, especially when they go on sale.
