The sound quality is excellent from the phones; the quality from the microphones is OK. They are light in weight, which is nice. I wonder how well the ear pads will wear. Overall, the workmanship feels and looks good - as usual for Sony. The microphone does not work when using the wired connection, not mentioned in the documentation! Fortunately the excellent Sony support staff quickly explained that this is how it’s designed. Swiping on the phones to change the volume is clumsy and slow. Also annoying: the power button is an awkwardly placed tiny button. The unit shuts off automatically when taken off, which is nice - but requires more effort than it should to restart.

Purchased the Sonos Ace and the Apple Air Pods Max and the Sony 1000XM5 out performed them by a land slide. The clarity was comparable to the Ace and Max, but the bass was significantly better. While we designed these with a lightweight "Soft Fit Leather" headband to be very comfortable for most, we understand that fit can be a very personal experience. Excellent Comfortable Product

I have used them a decent amount, and everything is great. The comfort is a highlight. I wear glasses and some over the ear headphones feel uncomfortable (like the airpods max) but these feel so good on my head. The noise cancelling is what I would come to expect from first party audio companies nowadays. The sound is great and I haven't noticed any problems. I got these for less because I am an employee and I would likely buy these for full price if I was needing a nice pair of over the ear headphones.

One Example is, I owned a Pair of XM2 (of the multiple I've owned) for a period of 3Yrs& 2Months. and worked as good ax the Day I bought them. I own both and the MX5 has far greater noise cancellation with the same tone quality as MX4. More ear cup space makes these retain less heat and therefore more comfortable. If youre flying as much as me, the noise cancellation is scary good on a plane (no crying babies). I highly recommend these headphones and the Sony app offers very adaptive tuning.

Love These Headphones But Quirks Prevent 5/5 Stars

Owned for 3 months when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I absolutely love these headphones, they do exactly what I wanted; block out ~90% of the noise around me with a single button. I wear these primarily while I'm at work, which is a large warehouse with lots and lots of noise, and these have no problem blocking it all out. This is where some of the quirks begin however. The first quirk is the microphones in the earcups; they are very sensitive to loud, high-pitched sound, like a piece of tape being ripped from its roll for example. These high-pitch sounds have a tendency to cut through the noise-cancelling and cause some sound tearing in the headphones when that happens. Unfortunately, I often use tape at work, so every time I do, I have to rotate my head away from the tape as I'm pulling it to prevent hearing a loud sound tear while my headphones are on. I'm sure that this is just a quirk and not something that most people will experience, but it's worth pointing out. The other major quirk I have experienced is the material the ear cups are made from. It's a kind of rubbery-leather material that, quite frankly, I don't like. I find that even light physical activity causes the area around the ears to moisten up and run hot when I'm wearing these because of that material. A kind of cloth material would have been a better choice in my opinion, but I'm sure Sony had a reason to chose what they did use. Additionally, because this material has no grip to it, I find that my glasses routinely slide down my face because the headset press-fits to your head, which causes the glasses to be pushed forward because there's nothing for them to grab onto and stay in place. Again, likely something that most people will not experience, but it definitely is something to know about. Overall however, these are the best headphones I have ever owned, and I have owned many over the years. If you're on the fence about buying them, just do it. Worst comes to worst, you return them, but I bet you won't!
