XM5's beat M&D headphones in almost every way.

I returned them because I also ordered at the same time a pair of M&D headphones at $600.00. Being a bit of a snob I kept the M&D headphones instead. I've regretted it ever since.

More natural true to life sounding instruments than the AirPods Max - no comparison in that regard. Cello, violin, piano, harp, brass all sound detailed, nuanced and realistic like you could reach out and touch the instrument. Only grievance I have is that the inner ear cups are a bit shallow so even my small ears touch the inner surface.

Remarkable ANC - cleaner sound profile.

Some people may prefer the sound of the 4th gen more but I believe the 5th gen has a cleaner sound and is more accurate in audio presentation. ANC is amazing much better than the 4th gen (which I also have and is impressive as well).

Love them and even use them for the gym. They are not sweat resistant, but as long as you wipe them down and not do a crazy sweating workout you’ll be fine. Was a choice between this and the new Bose QuietComfort Ultras. I preferred the comfort and headband of the Ultra, but the mic quality and aware feature by covering the right earcup is very convient.

Good ANC, Terrible Build Quality

However, the sound quality is a bit lower than I expected. The build quality of these are also absolutely horrendous as they have broken from just sitting on a shelf of an extended period of time.

The headphones definitely shouldn’t be breaking like that, so we recommend reaching out to our service center, Encompass, for a low-cost repair: https://sony.encompass.com/parts-accessories/Sony-Repair-Services
For the sound, you might also want to try adjusting some of the EQ settings in the Sony | Sound Connect app, it can make a big difference depending on what you’re listening to.
