"underwhelming"

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I own several sets of headphones including, Bowers & wilkins, Sennheiser, bose, bang & olufson, shure. I currently own sony xm-3's and had xm-4's. (which I sold for the xm-3's). This was not a downgrade, it was an upgrade. Just because there is a new version of something doesn't automaticlly make it better and that's the case with the xm-5. 1st I must say the noise cancelling in version 3 is as good as the latest edition. Also for the 400.00 price tag I cant hear any more detail from the new ones over the 3rd edition. If anything, fine details are muted. The bass is still muffled like version 4 and turning up the bass only muffles it more. The best part of these headphones are the comfort and phone call quality, which I don't buy headphones for anyway. I'm looking for sound quality, anc performance and comfort. Based on sound quality alone, I had to return these. Also, when I turned them on and put them on my head I kept smelling burning rubber. It was coming from the ear pads. Probably chemicals they use in packing from over seas. Not good, It made me sick. There are much better options at a cheaper price point. What comes to mind are the shure aonic 40's for 250.00. To each his own!

I used to own the sony WH 4s but overtime they fallen apart. I purchased the WH 5s for an "upgrade". The bass seems to struggle at high volume. When taking off the headphone to rest around your neck, they flip up intead of down towards your chest. They look great. Sound quality 4 out of 5. They may be on price drop soon.

He has a Sony noise canceling headphones now and he said these are better. He likes the ability to turn on/off the noise canceling when we are out to dinner. He can turn it off to talk to me, then turn it back on easily afterwards.

The sounds quality is amazing, absolutely top of the line comapred to any other retail marketed headphones out there, Bose, Apple, Beats, JBL, and other Sony products.

Sony does not disappoint

The best ANC I have had has been with these and the ambient is even as good. I have switched over to headphones from earphones because all of them have fallen out of my ear no matter what the design was. Only thing I do wish was that the touch controls were on both sides.
