Carrying case is great too

You hear nothing around you and using them to talk on the phone is great . Light weight and looks nice and very very comfortable but noone told you this before even on youtube. They are not loud at all . I need twice the sound they have to keep them.

For low sound level, please try the following steps below:
Turn up the volume of the headset and the connected device.
Connect the Bluetooth device to the headset once again.
Reset the headset.
Initialize the headset, and pair the headset and the device again.
Note: Depending on the connected device, the volume of the device and the headset may or may not be synced. If the volume on a device is not synced to the volume on the headset, it will not be possible to use the device to turn up the volume on the headset once the volume is turned down on the headset. In that case, turn up the volume of both the headset and the connected device.

Vast sound quality improvement over the XM4

The noise cancelling in a way is improved but it sounds like it is always adapting to background noise and your head movements which may bother someone using this to nap with.

E.g., After a story I was listening to finished, I couldn't get anything else to play. I'm hoping I can figure out how to prevent this sort of thing.

Poorly designed noise cancelling feature

Basically, depending on the environment, how you move your head, or how you are wearing these headphones, you will HEAR the noise cancelling change completely. You will randomly hear it become less strong or more strong, etc… it does this seemingly at random. This is extremely annoying and this feature cannot be turned off, it ruins these headphones for me personally.

We are very sorry to hear about your frustration with the noise-canceling performance of your WH-1000XM5 headphones. What you are describing sounds like the Adaptive Sound Control or Speak-to-Chat features, which can be adjusted or disabled.
We recommend opening the "Sony | Headphones Connect" app and turning off Adaptive Sound Control on the Status tab. Additionally, please ensure Speak-to-Chat is disabled in the Sound tab, as this can also cause the audio to shift when it detects movement or speech. While the Auto NC Optimizer adjusts to your environment, disabling these specific settings usually provides the consistent experience you are looking for.

Good improvement in the way to handle the ambiance isolation and the total silence mode, it is very intutive and I noticed less isolation in the older version I feel disconnected from the sorroundings.Like always unparalleled sound quality. Great for the gym

The volume level does have to be at about 70% plus noise cancellation to really not hear anything but overall great pair.

My first phones were Koss Pro 4AAA. These provide frequency response and detail surpassing anything I’ve ever used. The noise canceling is extremely effective without any I’ll effects.
