Warranty feels weak.

Not as good as expected

For one they were uncomfortable compared to the xm3. The sound was slightly better but seemed like some songs sounded really good while others sounded terrible. I never notice that on the xm3. I couldn't wear them more than an hour without taking them off. Maybe it would have adjusted over time but not in two weeks. The bass seemed great on some songs but non existent on others. I suspect the range isn't as good as previous models even though it's cleaner it's just strange and makes for an inconsistent listening experience. Something else I noticed was way more detail but almost to much where I never heard it before in a song and it was distracting and didn't add to the music. An example is some songs have like what sounds like you are listening on vinyl. Some songs are made that way but it's over emphasized and stands out. Hard to explain but it's distracting and unpleasant to me. The mic for calls is noticably better but the lack of comfort and the inconsistent sound quality I gave them to my wife to use and took my xm3s back and will look for something else down the road. Disappointed in Sony for these. They used to only release the best but feel these are rushed or something and was a letdown.

Great for drowning out ambient noise but you can still hear conversations nearby. Also, it constantly connects to my iPhone even when I'm using it on my laptop.

Please try the following if the effect of noise canceling is not sufficient.
Make sure the noise canceling function is turned on.
Adjust the headset into a comfortable position.
The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
When the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app is turned on, the wearer's actions, like walking or running, are detected. The noise canceling function is automatically adjusted and the Ambient Sound Mode may be activated according to these actions.
To make the most of the noise canceling function, turn off the Adaptive Sound Control, and try to turn on the noise canceling function manually when you need it.
With the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app, check the setting of [Ambient Sound Control]. If it is set to [Ambient Sound], the effect of noise canceling is reduced. Set it to the noise canceling mode.
Check with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app whether the function of the NC/AMB button is set to [Ambient Sound Control].
Because the noise canceling performance is automatically optimized by the Auto NC Optimizer function according to changes in the wearing condition and usage environment, you may notice fluctuations in the noise canceling effect.

However, XM5 is still an excellent headphone. The only couple of things I didn't like about it were the ear cushions (extremely thin and uncomfortable) and the overall plasticky build quality.

Owned for 3 months when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had big expectations for this, but just after half an hour it start making top of my head uncomfortable, switching between devices needs extra steps, not like on wf 1000 xm4, you just press connect and the headphone disconnects from current device and connect to next device seamlessly. Headband should be wider, sound quality have no improvement over previous generation.

While we are glad that you like the sound quality and noise canceling function, we regret that the person on the other line can hear background noises when using the headphones for calls. Make sure to install the latest software version of the headphones (via the Sony Headphones Connect app) for optimum performance. Your voice will be heard from the headset through the headset’s left and right microphones (Sidetone function). In this case, ambient sounds or the sounds of the headset operation may be heard through the headset, but this is not a malfunction.
Noise cancellation doesn't transfer during telephone calls. Although it protects the headphones user from the surrounding noise, it does not apply to the receiver of the call: they will potentially hear background noise. For call quality, re-establish the connection between the headphones and your source device. Select HFP or HSP for the profile. You can also check the settings of the app that you are using for mic sensitivity if available.
