But if you find xm5 on sale, grab it. Great sound quality, ease of use, the sony app is amazing but unfortunately its only on mobile phones and not on pc but the settings are easy to set and the headphones will remember it when you connect to other devices. Also connecting to devices is very easy,

As advertised but missing some big basic features

The absence of any quick start guide was frustrating since I didn't have great cell coverage at the time I unboxed the headphones. I didn't know about the controls on the side and the app does not offer any guide either. I am still left in a maze to navigate their website in and out of hyperlinks to figure out which button or surface space does what. For an extremely high price these headphones are less about quality sound and more about noise canceling. If you like great audio, these aren't the headphones for you as they muffle and distort the sound. In general, noise canceling does that so that isn't a complete surprise. An astonishing and ridiculous issue I have with these headphones is that you CANNOT USE THEM WHILE THEY CHARGE?! In this era of device demand, this is a shockingly ignorant choice on the part of Sony. I get it, they might think since wireless earbuds can't be used while charging then who needs to listen to their headphones while they charge? Or perhaps they prioritized a fast charge over listening. The problem with that comes when you quick charge devices over and over again for short periods of time ruining the battery performance. Sony is practically begging you to do that by discouraging you from being able to listen to them at the same time as fully charging them. Overall I appreciate being able to drown out a good amount of background noise but I am left questioning if that's really worth the $400 price tag. If you are looking for noise canceling, pick a pair of great sounding earbuds and skip the actual noise canceling feature, just purchase some flight line ear protection headphones for a much better comfort and outside noise control. You'll save yourself hundreds while having a much lighter pair of headphones that doesn't overheat your ears. Another disappointment of mine was the erroneous idea that connecting to two devices at the same time would mean I could actually listen to two inputs at the same time. Perhaps Bluetooth isn't there yet through no fault of Sony, but I also felt the advertising was misleading on this particular feature and the answer was buried in Bluetooth spec and tech sites and not disclosed on the Sony site. I like that my phone can interrupt my business meeting playing from my computer but I dislike that I cannot listen to ambient sound on Pandora while participating in a business meeting at the same time. Since the audio can't be independently adjusted in noise volume by your individually connected device, you are left with a ring tone set to the same volume as your YouTube video or conversely the YouTube video resumes as loudly as the call and that is mildly annoying.

It’s been excellent for my college classes as well as listening to music basically 24/7. It charges fast and lasts very long. I fell in love with my apple airpods for their noise cancelling, especially when flying, they were a lifesaver but on long flights they would run out of battery. After a little research I settled on these and am very happy. Excellent sound which is rich and detailed in subtle ways, too many headphones try to overcome poor sound quality with excessive bass. Good battery life and superior noise cancelling, I have not tried the mic feature yet.

Owned for 8 months when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.*ANC is great *situational ANC/pass through feature is nice to have *sound quality is pretty good even after playing with the EQ but not totally immersive *build quality is great - though I am pretty careful about the headband, it doesn't inspire rugged confidence. soft goods feel soft and compliant *excellent battery life and battery charge rate *being able to connect to my phone and PC and having it seamlessly transition based on use case is amazing *had an issue with the XM5 randomly turning off, used it for about 400 hours total - spoke to Sony CS 3 times over 4 months and they only suggested factory resets if I hadn't already updated my firmware. On the third time they decided to do a warranty replacement on my XM5 - it took 2+ weeks total for a replacement because they sent me the wrong color on the first replacement.

Messing around with the EQ and other features on the Headphones Sony app truly makes the product unique such as placing your palm on the right outer headphone surface to activate the 6 mics around the headphones to activate the attention mode to hear your surroundings or the fact that there arent any buttons for replaying the previous song or going to the next or even volume up and down...its all on that same touch sensitive outer surface of the headphone and it amazes me how well it works. Theres even the feature that pauses the music automatically when you start speaking (can be toggles on/off in settings). Not to mention the battery, it charges for like 10 minutes to get about 3 hours of play time.

I got them for when I am in bed and there are high pitched noises or when I travel and need absolute silence in a busy-street- alot-of-noise hotel. What I found was to first insert ear bud style ear plugs in first and then put the Sony headphones over that in noise-cancelling mode. Nothing gets in! I mean nothing! I sleep very well, if on my back, even though I am a side-sleeper. I thought I would pass this tip along since so many reviewers on different products have helped me out in the past. For anyone super-sensitive to noises, give my advise a try, it works. I have never used these for music, only to silence the noise pollution when I need to. What a relief.
