Noise cancelling is very good, cancels all background noise. You can still hear a nearby conversation but it's muffled. Ambient noise feature is nice and it's adjustable.

I’ve used a lot of Beat headphones and wanted know what I was missing out with Noice Cancelling Over the Ear headphones. It’s everything I expected. Audio is extremely crisp without interruption from your surroundings. You have more control inside the app with Ambient surroundings which allow you to hear the space you’re surrounded in with music playing. You can also set the headphones to react to your voice, the moment you talk it’ll mute the song. That can get very annoying if you like singing to songs so I turned that feature off. It’s worth the investment to buy one of these. Only thing I thought would be better would be the Bass. There isn’t ANY AT ALL. For $400 you would think it would give you some nice bass, but it does make it up elsewhere.

While the WH1000XM5 units don’t have an IPX rating, these can be worn in the gym. For more serious workouts, we suggest our headphones specifically designed for that task. Check out our WF-C500s and the WF-1000XM4s.

So I decided to exchange my brand new xm4 in order to try the XM5, I had read on Sony that these were the latest from Sony even though the XM4 had not been all that long on the market, and Sony was saying that the XM5 are the top of the line. So when I tried them they were effectively better than my XM4 and I kept them. About 15 days after having my XM5 I noticed that randomly they turned off while I was using them, It happened 3 times so I went back to the store and have them exchange for another XM5, and so far so good. The quality of sound is really crispy on the XM5 even better than on the XM4 which is hard to believe until you tried them.

In the default setting, the headphones use built-in sensors to detect when you wear or remove them and automatically turn the headphones on or off as needed. If you have trouble with the headphones turning off unintentionally, check the following:
When you wear the headphones over a cap, a scarf, or hair, etc., the sensors may not be able to detect that you are wearing them and may turn them off. To avoid this, be sure to set the earpads directly over the ears.
If the wearing detection still bothers you, disable the Automatic Power Off setting. You can do this using the Sony | Headphones Connect app: System → Automatic Power Off, and select Do not turn off.
If the issue is not still resolved, reset the headphones. If the issue still persists, then initialize the headphones. Note: Resetting the headphones will not delete the paring information, while initialization returns the headphones to the factory settings and all Bluetooth pairing information is deleted.

Excellent gift for my 71yr old mother.
