We also appreciate your honest thoughts about the noise canceling. To help maximize performance, we suggest checking the Sony | Sound Connect app.
In the app, you can confirm that Adaptive Sound Control is OFF (as it can sometimes switch to Ambient Sound mode) and that the Ambient Sound Control setting is clearly set to Noise Cancelling in the "Sound" tab.

Only thing I would like is more bass but that doesn't mean these are bad. I really like the feel of quality and hard shell case definitely a good product.

Not As Good As Reviewers Say

The main issue is the sound quality, it sounds mediocre, or even bad without spending hours tuning it. iPhone users are more likely to be not happy with the quality due to a lack of a third party EQ, and Android users are still trying to find out how to make these pair of headphones worth the money. Also unmentioned by many online, or YouTube reviewers is AutoANC instead of having ANC working full force all the time. I can be next to a person speaking and hear every word they say with music playing. When ANC kicks in, it's honestly barely noticeable. I still need my music very loud to hear over the loud environment. Ambient mode is okay, I'll use it if I have too but, I usually take off the headphones. Fortunately, the XM5's are light and have a nice, rubberized finish that I like. I have big ears, and comfort over 3+ hours is great. And, the lack of folding doesn't personally bother me. Overall, I think I should have gotten AirPods Max whenever I don't hear the ANC work.

This generation does not fold away for storage. Sound quality is very good. Just not the level of upgrade I expected over the previous generation given the price.

Blue Tooth Issues

My issues with these headphones is the blue tooth constantly disconnects. Also, the noise canceling quality is not very good.

For Bluetooth connectivity:
- Please ensure your headphones are updated to the latest firmware using the Sony Headphones Connect App.
- In the app, you can also set the set the headset to “Priority on stable connection”, which can reduce the audio/Bluetooth dropouts.
- Try to avoid using the headphones in areas with heavy wireless interference, such as near microwave ovens, crowded trains, or when surrounded by multiple wireless communication audio devices.
For noise cancelling performance:
- Make sure the headphones are properly fitted and fully sealed over your ears—this makes a big difference in blocking outside sound.
- In the Sony Headphones Connect App, use the "Auto NC Optimizer" feature, which adjusts performance based on your environment and personal fit.
- Double-check that Adaptive Sound Control isn't automatically lowering noise cancelling in certain situations; you can manually set it to "Noise Canceling" using the app for maximum effect.

I didnt have super high hopes on the noise canceling feature but i have to say, its far better than my airpods! Just wish i had caught them when they went on sale a few weeks after i had purchased!

Love them and even use them for the gym. They are not sweat resistant, but as long as you wipe them down and not do a crazy sweating workout you’ll be fine. These are leaps and bounds better. Struggled with the decision to go with the newest version or save a few bucks and get the XM4. I don’t know if the XM5 is that much better but they are really great, especially for airplane travel.
