Owned for 3 months when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had big expectations for this, but just after half an hour it start making top of my head uncomfortable, switching between devices needs extra steps, not like on wf 1000 xm4, you just press connect and the headphone disconnects from current device and connect to next device seamlessly. Headband should be wider, sound quality have no improvement over previous generation.

Great for drowning out ambient noise but you can still hear conversations nearby. Also, it constantly connects to my iPhone even when I'm using it on my laptop.

Please try the following if the effect of noise canceling is not sufficient.
Make sure the noise canceling function is turned on.
Adjust the headset into a comfortable position.
The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
When the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app is turned on, the wearer's actions, like walking or running, are detected. The noise canceling function is automatically adjusted and the Ambient Sound Mode may be activated according to these actions.
To make the most of the noise canceling function, turn off the Adaptive Sound Control, and try to turn on the noise canceling function manually when you need it.
With the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app, check the setting of [Ambient Sound Control]. If it is set to [Ambient Sound], the effect of noise canceling is reduced. Set it to the noise canceling mode.
Check with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app whether the function of the NC/AMB button is set to [Ambient Sound Control].
Because the noise canceling performance is automatically optimized by the Auto NC Optimizer function according to changes in the wearing condition and usage environment, you may notice fluctuations in the noise canceling effect.

However, XM5 is still an excellent headphone. The only couple of things I didn't like about it were the ear cushions (extremely thin and uncomfortable) and the overall plasticky build quality.

The sound is really good, there is just something that I don't like about it that I can't put my finger on, even after messing with the EQ. The earcups also really hurt my ears after about an hour of wearing them. I use my headphones to play music for hours while I try to complete classes online, so I am not able to have something this expensive that I can only use for an hour at a time. As a side note, the app that they use also sucks imo. It has a lot of features, but is not user friendly. I am very disappointed as I was expecting to have these for years to come.

If you still have the WH-1000XM5, we'd love to troubleshoot the issue and make this a better experience for you. In the meantime, If the headset is worn without adjusting the slider, the headset may not be positioned properly on your head, resulting in discomfort or a weak noise canceling effect. The wearing detection function of the headset may also not work properly and cause music playback to stop automatically or activate the automatic power off function (the battery saving function) to automatically turn off the headset. My first phones were Koss Pro 4AAA. These provide frequency response and detail surpassing anything I’ve ever used. The noise canceling is extremely effective without any I’ll effects.
