They sound fine.. good base but the build quality trumps that.. the plastic is weak at exactly where is not supposed to be.. mine broke not long after I bought them.. very disappointed because Sony used to build sturdy products.. this one is not.

SONY WH-XB900N: I’ve owned various brand headphones, including several Sony models going back years. I generally prefer over-the-ear headphones because they always “fit” without fussing, but these may be the best yet. SONY may even want to consider suspending any further work on headphone usability and ergonomics. They seem to have arrived at perfection. All those features that have looked so cool in the advertising in the past, but maybe not quite lived up to their promise? Well, now they all work perfectly. You even have the ability to fully customize the sound of these SONYs in the useful CONNECT APP. Your headphones . . . your preferred sound. I’ll be hiding these from family. SETUP and FUNCTION: where everything makes sense! The features I’ll describe below operate as described using the Bluetooth connection between my iPhone XR and the Sony Headphones. This is the most likely connection for most people. + LEFT and RIGHT ear cups are labelled, with color, and are easy to identify. + The buttons have sufficient height and separation, and they work as described each time. The lowest button initiates the Bluetooth connection. It was quick and remains reliable. The same button turns off the headphones and a voice announces that fact. A blinking blue light between buttons confirms ON. + The upper button cycles through NOISE CANCELLING . . . AMBIENT SOUND CONTROL . . . AMBIENT SOUND CONTROL OFF. A voice confirms each change. ++ The upper button can be changed into a Google Assistant button or an Alexa Assistant in the SONY CONNECT APP. + SONY’s Headphone CONNECT APP (Versions App 5.2.0; 1.0.2 for XB900N) presents features appropriate for the connected headphones. If you have a few different Sony model headphones, the APP presents only those features you can use. +The CONNECT APP allows you to customize the following: ___ Adaptive Sound control give a range of NOISE CANCELLATION levels. ___ Sound Position control moves you around in the sound field. ___ Sound Quality Mode selects the highest quality BT or the most stable connection. ___ Change (enable) either Google Assistant or Alexa. + You can enable/disable AUTOMATIC POWER OFF, to occur at various times. + You can enable/disable the VOICE Announcements. CUSTOMIZE EQUALIZER - I’m singling out the EQUALIZER for special attention. It’s here that YOU decide if you really want EXTRA BASS, or not, or even more bass. Open the equalizer section of the features. Tap the “gear” icon and the fun begins. You are presented with a 5-band equalizer to modify the sound profile of your music. In addition, you can set the level of SONY’s “CLEAR BASS”, which presumably is their BASS augmentation control. Independent of the equalizer, it’s here that you can take away the BASS augmentation or add even more. These are your headphones, and you are in complete control. Your changes are saved as Custom 1 or Custom 2 settings, alongside of SONY’s several named sound profiles. AND IT WORKS. The coolest feature of all is on the RIGHT ear cup. Not switches. Not slide controls you need to fumble with. A slide of your fingers UP, increases the volume; DOWN decreases the volume. A slide forward or backwards SKIPS your music selection ahead or replays a previous selection. Taps on the same RIGHT ear cup pauses the music. Phone calls still use the RIGHT ear cup. This time a double tap either answers or hangs up on the call. Phone calls are nice and clear; increase the volume by sliding UP! [ Sony has included a double-ended headphone jack, which requires NO power, and can be used with a discharged battery. The SONYs will operate perfectly fine. However, without the POWER ON the headphones, the noise cancellation and ambient control works are disabled. The SONY CONNECT App, which is how various custom features work, is available only while using the Bluetooth connection, and it needs power. I, personally, would rarely discharge the battery completely, and losing some features for those few hours isn’t a crisis.] SOUND QUALITY: Whatever you want is within reach using the EQUALIZER and the CLEAR BASS control in the CONNECTION APP. With CLEAR BASS reduced significantly, these are very natural, accurate, easy-to-listen-to headphones for long stretches. SONY has provided very accurate drivers in these headphones, that ANY buyer will completely enjoy. Everything I played sounded great. Older recordings of 60s-70s rock often lack sufficient bass. Switching off my Custom settings and relying on SONY’s augmented bass resulted in music that was obviously still older, but completely re-equalized with the improved bass that just never made it to the recording. Really nice. SONY’s Noise reduction is highly effective, with background sounds totally disappearing . . . unless you customize for more ambient sound. SUMMARY: You’re always in control with the SONYs. They are easy to modify to address different music styles or my mood. It seems to my ears that noise cancellation is near perfect, and sound quality is not compromised. Comfort is also exceptional. These are light, easy to tolerate for lengthy periods, and remarkably easy to operate. The controls work reliably and are precisely where you expect to find them. Highly recommended.

Detailed sound with powerful bass and noise cancel

Design: These are over the ear headphones, completely covering the ears. The earcups are quite thick at about 2/3 inch and very soft. The headband is also plush. The headphones also fold flat and inside the headband making it easier to carry. While it's on the larger side, the earcups are very comfortable to wear though the day. Construction is mostly solid, quality plastic with parts of the headband covered in leatherette. It comes with a soft-lined carrying bag, a short charging cable and 3.5mm audio cable. Sound quality: Full-bodied sound, very crisp and clear. Enhancing bass levels do not distort the sound. These phones are labeled as Extra Bass, and while it delivers, the bass level is completely adjustable, producing detailed, neutral sound, with a punch, when called for. Noise Cancelling: While the Noise Cancelling circuitry on this model, unlike the 1000 series, does not account for changes in air pressure, which would be applicable to air travel, it's otherwise as good as it gets. When paired with a phone, either iOS or Android, it also uses the sensors on the phone to detect is one is sitting, traveling or walking/running, and adjusts noise cancelling accordingly. It can also be set manually to play back noise from its mics for better situational awareness, or to filter all noises except voices, which I prefer. Battery life is excellent, with a rating of 30 to 45 hours depending on use. I managed to use them for over a week at work, on and off, and by the end of the week, the battery was still at around 50%. Bluetooth: The major negative is that it still uses Bluetooth 4.2, while other brands had Bluetooth 5.0 for some time. The advantage of BT 5 is not sound quality, but is more efficient in power consumption on both the headphones and the phone. Other than that, this is one of the few headphones that provides every Bluetooth codec available today. I used this with both iOS and Android phones, and it supports SBC and AAC on iOS, and additionally, also supports AptX and AptX HD on Android phones. If using a recent Sony device, like a Sony Receiver (I my case, the STR-DN1080), it also supports the LDAC codec, which is Sony proprietary. While this phone doesn't have Sony's HD Audio label, both AptX HD and LDAC support 24bit audio streams. It also supports NFC pairing, which makes setting up the headphones slightly easier. Mic: Has mics on both sides All the functions of the headphones can be controlled via an app "Headphones Connect" (iOS or Android), which works about the same way on either platform: - Battery level and BT codec in use. - Equalizer: 5 bands plus bass control and several presets. - DSEE HX: This appears in different Sony products and it helps in restoring heavily compressed music. I leave it on and it does sound better without creating distortion (Disabled if equalizer is on, except for bass levels). - Sound position control: This is a creates the illusion that sound comes from a side or behind, but disables the equalizer. Not sure how this is useful, but it's there. - Surround: Like on many receivers, it creates different echo/ambient effects. Nice for show but I end up leaving it off. - Controls for noise cancelling: It has an interesting feature where the app uses sensors on the phone and GPS to guess the level of activity and adjusts the amount of ambient sound mixed within the noise cancelling, or it can be set manually. The headphones also includes a headphone cable that can be used as a wired headphone. Controls: The best part is that covering the right ear-cup with one hand turns off echo cancellation and turns the volume very low. This is so when someone wants to talk to you, don't need to pause and remove the headphones. This works great. The left side has a power button that's also used for pairing and another button to select the noise cancellation mode, and from the app can be changed to launch the voice assistant. The right ear-cup has touch-sensitive controls: Double-tap for play/pause Swipe up/down for volume Swipe left/right for prev/next track Hold with one finger for Siri/Assistant or controlling calls. The touch-sensitive controls work but not the best choice for me. I wish it had more actual buttons. Sometimes when I think I'm swiping up or down, end up changing the song. The double-tap for play/pause isn't intuitive enough. Takes longer than pressing a button to react. It's not very responsive. It takes about 2 seconds to pause the phone using the controls. I used other Sony headphones and it seems to be the same across all of Sony's headphones with touch-sensitive controls. Also, it does not detect if someone takes the headphones off: It does not pause the phone. The power-off settings are configurable, so it's possible to set the headphones for noise cancelling, and stay on, without being connected to the phone, once set up. If used with the 3.5mm cable, the headphones also work while off. Voice assistants: While there is no additional setup needed for using Siri on iOS or the assistant on each Android device, these, like other newer Sony headsets, provide integration with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant (One the two, but if using these, the noise cancelling settings have to be changed from the app).

I've been using these headphones for the last week, trying to test them in every environment available. They are just as comfortable to use in a quiet office as they are in a crowded bus, keeping out the treadmill noise and allowing a voice enhanced ambient noise in on a run! Everywhere I wore these, they performed excellently! The touch controls do take some getting used to but they come fairly naturally after the first hour of use. The companion app is an excellent resource to explore and enhance the sound and capabilities of these headphones at any time, offering many adjustments to the sound and connection quality. Many of the adjustments that can be made are available when the app is focused on connection instead of sound quality but, the option for optimal sound quality brings the performance up to par with the Sony WH-1000MX3, just slightly less flashy in the aesthetics. The comfort is still there, most over-the-ear ANC headphones get uncomfortable after an hour or so but these just soldiered on, staying just as comfortable hour after hour! The two button configuration with one being a "custom" button instead of something predetermined is a welcomed change and very useful! I use mine for switching between ambient noise control on/off and noise cancelling, this can also be set to work with Google Assistant or Alexa too! The most convenient feature for me so far has undoubtedly been the quick attention gesture, where you can immediately turn on voice-focused ambient noise by just cover the right ear cup (works by placing 3-4 fingers over it too)! This allows you to quickly listen and have a conversation without having to take the headphones off or wait for the ambient mode to switch! Overall, I love the performance of these headphones for the fit and sound quality, battery life so far has been over 30 hours with active noise cancelling and the quick charging seems to have worked perfectly too! For the regular difference in cost from their big brother (the WH-1000MX3), these are an incredible choice!

    My new favorite wireless headphone

Over the last several years, I’ve had numerous pairs of wireless headphones and earphones from various brands and they all have appealed to me in different ways. These new Sony WH-XB900N’s are almost perfect based on what I look for in headphones. These came about 70% charged, so I was able to pair them to my iPhone and begin using them right away. Pairing was simple and straightforward and was completed in seconds. I downloaded the Sony Headphones Connect app and this is where the headphones really begin to shine. The app lets you completely customize your sound. I typically listen to a lot of Jazz, R&B and Hip-Hop, so I was able to customize the sound I was able to customize the sound to my liking. You can fully customize the amount of ambient sound you hear, sound position, surround sound, bass and treble. The app also has presets based on whether you are running, walking, sitting or on public transportation. The bass is incredible in these headphones. If you like bass, these are better than any other brand that I have used and its clear and distortion free. It can be overpowering at times, but can be adjusted within the app. The thing that impresses me the most is that although the bass is deep and throaty, the mids and highs aren’t compromised. I could still hear the vocals clearly. After trying these with my iPhone XS Max, I connected my Moto Z4 with AptX. Once I enabled it on the phone, I went to Amazon and Apple Music to listen to some tracks. I was expecting to be overwhelmed with the sound quality of AptX, but I was only slightly impressed. Im not an expert on AptX, so maybe it has more to do with what streaming service I use. The headphones are rated to last for 30 hours, but I haven’t had a chance to test that. If you do happen to run out of battery, Sony included a 3.5mm cable that you can plug directly into your device so you can continue using them. If you have an iPhone or some of the other newer devices, you will need a dongle to connect them. I do like that these are charged using a USB-C cable and not micro USB, but they take roughly 7 hours to charge when completely drained. Another great feature is the Quick Attention mode. By placing your right hand over the right ear cup, the volume is turned down so that you can listen to who or what is around you. Ordinarily, I take my headphones off or pause the track, but with these you don’t need to do either. This is a feature, I’ve come to really appreciate along with the great noise cancellation. The controls for adjusting volume and switching tracks are as simple as swiping up and down or left and right on the right ear cup. I didn’t have any issues using either and it was very responsive. The only minor issue I have is the weight of these. I like to wear headphones when I’m working from home or when I’m lounging and listening to music. After a while, they get to be uncomfortable. I guess this is to be expected with drivers this large. Other than the weight, these are a great set of headphones. The 30 hrs of usage, customization within the app, sound quality and solid build of the headphones make these my current favorite and go to headphones.

    CRACKED WITH GENTLE NORMAL USE

I would strongly advise against getting these or any other sony headphone. They cracked in half and if you google, this is clearly a common problem. Sony will not honor this defect, they just keep claiming it is not covered under warranty. They are useless cracked in half. They don't stay on. And just for reference, i handled my headphones with extreme care. Never dropped them, never even folded them or put them in a bag. Just put them on my head and off. After about 10 calls the most they offered to do for me was send them to be repaired which would cost me about $100, or they offered me a $10 discount. I'd suggest finding another brand as this problem seems to be a common occurrence in several different of their headphone models.

These headphones are fantastic! Very pleased with them. I am usually very picky when it comes to sound quality on headphones. I am no expert, however if I put the headphones/earbuds on and it doesn't get my head moving....I'm usually disappointed. I've returned quite a few headphones and earbuds. These by far have amazing levels of base, they bring out depth to the music and you can here more of what's going on. In fact even with some songs, I had to look around the room after hearing "noises" that were actually coming from the song that I normally don't recognize. They are comfortable and feel very sturdy. They also come with a small black bag case, a USB-C to A connection, and an auxiliary cable. The battery life is also phenomenal. I love how the side of the headphones have touch controls. You can swipe up/down to change volume, or left/right to change songs, double tap to pause/play. (Heres a tip, to bring out a deeper sound and strong bass/thumping sound, connect the headphones with the app and utilize the equalizer which has an "Extra Bass" leveler for each setting.....it works!) These headphones are definitely exceptional and I'll be keeping them. Especially for the huge discount going on right now of around 50%off (at the time of review) these are DEFINITELY worth the price.

    My favorite Bluetooth headphones

These are my new favorite Bluetooth headphones. It is worth taking a moment to create one or two custom Equalizer settings in the Sony Headphones Connect app. You can leave the equalizer off, choose between eight presets or create two of your own custom settings. I’m really impressed with the Noise Cancelling feature on these headphones. This is my first pair with this feature, and I love how well they reduce background noise. The Noise Cancelling feature would randomly turn off until I disabled Adaptive Sound Control in the Headphones app. The first couple days I would hear a tone and Noise Cancelling would turn off, often enough to get annoying. I think the problem is the Adaptive Sound Control feature. While using the Headphones app I noticed the Adaptive Sound Control automatically switching the Ambient Sound Control from Staying to Transport as I moved past our living room fan. I also noticed the Location Notification Icon appearing far too often considering I’m in my house. I’m leaving Ambient Sound Control on Noise Cancelling and leaving the Adaptive Sound Control off. I’ve also disabled the Android location permission used by Adaptive Sound Control in the Sony Headphones app. It has been several days since turning off Adaptive Sound Control and noise cancelling has not randomly turned off once. It is nice Sony lets you change the function of the Custom button to support Siri/Google/Alexa assistants, but I prefer the default function that cycles through three Ambient Sound Control settings. The headband is comfortable at first but hurts after several hours. The band needs to be a little wider to spread out the weight and/or have more padding. The ear cups are large, padded and comfortable. The cup material feels similar to leather but shouldn’t get cracked or ruined by sweat. The touch controls on the right earcup are easy to use. I like Quick Attention Mode, but I wish it was a toggle on/off feature instead of hold to maintain. Holding my palm against my ear only works for one or two words. I really don’t like holding my palm against my ear to keep the feature enabled. One palm touch to enable Quick Attention Mode and then one more palm touch to disable would have been great. NFC on the left earcup is a nice feature. Tap your phone to the headphone to connect, tap again to disconnect. I use the headphones with just one phone, so they automatically reconnect to my phone when I turn them on. The included USB-C charging cable is nice, although a bit short. Our laptops use USB-C but otherwise our house is still mostly micro-USB so I’m glad they included the short cable. I don’t care for the Sound Position Control feature. Neat trick but I don’t understand the purpose. It doesn’t sound any better, just gimmicky. Same with the Surround (VPT) feature.

I have these to my father as a gift on Christmas night. Early the 26th my mom called & he had to be taken to a hospital where he remained for over a month. Today he finally opened his gift & the cord was damaged. My father is 87 years old & he couldn’t figure out why it couldn’t fit anywhere until I came to look & see that it was damaged. I wanted an exchange because I don’t trust the integrity of the product if the cord looks like that but Best Buy denied an exchange so I had to purchase a separate cord

Extremely light weight and very comfortable to wear. The sound quality is excellent, and the Extra Bass feature is especially nice for watching movies. For music I did need to turn the bass down with the companion app via iOS - I wasn’t listening to music that benefits from added bass, but if I was I’m sure it would be a nice feature. I have used these at home with a vinyl turntable, iPhone, connected to a PlayStation 4, Android TV, and on a few long flights and they have been great in all instances! The battery life in the flight was really great and didn’t need a charge with over 9 hrs of use I highly recommend these, especially if you’re looking at the more expensive M3 version but can’t justify the price difference (that was my issue).

These work fantastic for music, podcasts, phone calls, zoom calls, watching videos, exercising - don't run with these, they wont stay in place. They're comfortable for people who wear glasses too. The noise cancelling is so good, you can have your volume 1/4 full on an iphone and its enough to block out any outside noise. The cool thing is you can have your volume high and people around you can't hear what your listening to. The bass is amazing and you can change it to the way you like with the app and even if you don't like bass you can control that and still enjoy these headphones. Battery is better than expected. These could last up to 3-4 days with 100% and charge 0% to 100% in a few hours. The sony app makes these headphones the best because there are so many things you can do with it such as: * choose multiple hearing modes * choose multiple equalizers plus you can create two custom equalizers * choose sound position I loved how they come with a free trial of 360 reality audio for supporting apps. This feature is a better listening experience but to find out that Tidal only has few songs and albums by few artists with this feature was very disappointing. The material these headphones are made of look and feel like they will last you years. Overall, this is the type of headphone I would recommend to anyone without a doubt.

Great price, awesome audio, and the touch controls are easy to use. Very comfortable and the microphone works well. Plus, battery life is fantastic. I swapped out my AirPods for these and am very happy. I am on the phones all day for work and go to the gym with these. Just buy them! Base levels are just as I like. Not too loud but you can feel it for sure.

Excellent sound quality from these (and I'm very picky when it comes to headphones). Bass in super clean and punchy, and the app let's you either turn it wayyyy up or keep it at a moderate, balanced level. The mids are forward and clear. And the high are crisp at ANY volume, not something I can say for my sennheiser pair. The only weak point is the active noise cancelling which is a 6/10. A far cry from the most premium headphones money can buy. But this product is also $100+ cheaper! Comfort is excellent as the leather and cushions feel very soft and premium. Lasted me a whole 5 hour plane ride with no issues. Battery life is off the charts with 44 hours with ANC on (a YouTuber tested this not me) but I can confirm it feels endless. If value, bass, and comfort are important to you, you will not regret this purchase!

The Sony wh-xb900n headphones are a bass lovers dream. They pack a punch with deep, resonating low-end frequencies that elevate my music experience. The Noise cancellation feature is fantastic, blocking out distractions on my daily commute. Battery life is impressive, usually lasting through long flights. While they are comfortable, and adorable, Occasionally, the touch controls can be a bit finicky. Overall, these headphones deliver on their promises of great bass and noise cancellation, making them a solid choice for music lovers like me.

Excellent headphones, excellent sound. Good noise cancellation. Sound quality is the main good thing about these. I hear frequencies, notes and sounds that are not prominent at all in some other good headphones I have used, and still use. Touch controls are very good and easy to use also. NFC pairing - very easy. With the app you can have some spacial effects and EQ settings. I would not say these have XBass. I would call it Deep clear and real bass. For a long time I overlooked these because of slogans like XtraBass, Xbass. I thought that would be like Beats. The bass in these is a totally different experience from that. For me it sounds like I am standing in front of very tall speakers with big speaker bass. Not pushed or crazy beat your ear drum bass, but bass with definition, subtlety, clarity. Notes in instrumental music really stand out as they should. Guitar music, you can hear the character of the cabinets, can differentiate to what type of amplifier is being used, more Marshall, more Fender, or Vox, Peavey 5150. Very noticeable. I bought these a year ago on sale. Didn't even open the box for 2 months. Then my job required working long hours and we could wear headphones. So I have used these for many many hours for over almost a year. Definitely recommended if you don't want to splurge on the x?-1000 ones. I have listened to instrumental guitar music, heavy rock, metal, electronic, progressive jazz, classical on many other good headphones. This one has been one of the more really enjoyable ones. The only other at this level I think is the Sennheiser HD380. But this Sony is Wireless, Bluetooth and still great sound. There are options for quality vs. connection. Rarely in an area with many wireless signals there were some drops, in the same spot around data equipment, otherwise for normal use, no interference, no drops in signal. Excellent!
