The noise canceling is amazing, and the ambient mode is great as sometimes I'd like to be able to hear my surroundings when listening to my music. Much potential, falls short in a vital area for me

Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this headset to replace a comparable one from another brand (quality problems IMMEDIATELY after the warranty expired). Was actually looking for the 1000XM3, but seeing that this newer model was the same price made for an obvious decision to go with the newer headset. My use case may be much different than most. I live in an OLD, small apartment: the HVAC is located in a cabinet w/slatted door in my living room. This means that when I have the heat or A/C on, it is very loud and thus makes watching TV very challenging. So my main usage of this headset is for watching TV. Well, I've encountered some problems here: for one, when the headset connects to my TV (Samsung 6-series w/BT) the sound is choppy. The TV is about 7-8 feet straight ahead of me, so range & interference shouldn't be a factor - it wasn't with my other-brand headset. The only way I am able to overcome this is to ALSO connect the headset to the Sony Headset App on my smartphone, whereupon the sound stabilizes. So it's disappointing that I must employ my smartphone as a middleman to use this headset with my TV. This would be excusable if not for the other, more frustrating issue: sound sync. We've heard it before, about wireless headsets used with videos: the audio is a fraction of a second "off" and does not match what you're seeing. It does not happen EVERY time, but does occur most times, maybe 1 in 4 uses the audio is actually in sync with the video. This seems like something that can/should be resolvable with a software or firmware update. And I hope it comes soon: b/c the potential of this headset is so high and as a result I can't bring myself to return it. The sound quality is top notch - not just for wireless, but for ANY type of headset. The noise cancellation is excellent, so when my a/c is on I don't hear it at all and get beautiful & uninterrupted sound while watching television. The headset is extremely comfortable and relatively light, making it easy to ignore the fact that I'm wearing it. Touch controls work very well, and I particularly like the ambient control where cupping your hands over the outside of the ears quickly allows outside sounds in. If the headset was being used only for music listening, it'd be a 5-star rating without question, and I'm sure many feel that way. But the audio sync with video is a big problem which, again, I hope Sony will resolve soon with ne firmware.

While we're glad to hear you appreciate the sound quality, noise canceling feature, comfortable and lightweight design, very responsive touch control, and ambient sound control feature of the headphones, we regret to know that you're having a Bluetooth connectivity issues and audio delay issues with the unit.
To ensure you get the best Bluetooth connection, please set the headphones
Bluetooth Connection Mode to “Priority on stable connection” using the headphones connect app. Once you've set the Bluetooth Connection Mode to “Priority on stable connection" then there is no need for the smartphone to be connected to the headphones anymore.
With regards to the audio delay, these headphones supports Bluetooth version 5.0 which effectively generates higher quality audio with shorter delay times. However, The audio playback on this unit may be delayed from that on the transmitting device, due to the characteristics of Bluetooth wireless technology. As a result, the sound may not be in sync with the image when viewing movies or playing games.

All of the others were name brand; none of them holds a candle to the Sony's. The noise cancellation is perfect; if you need to hear the person next to you, you just put your hand over the right phone and you hear them clearly. The musical sounds are bright and clear; it's the best stereo separation I have ever had. Very long battery life. I have used these headphones more in the last month that several others in a year. I cannot recommend these highly enough.

Decent bass reponse. In addition the noise cancellation is excellent. I am in my own world with these on. No planes flying overhead, noise from fans, TV's blaring in the background and loud people. I have connected the headphones to my iPhone, MacBook, Google Chromecast, Two smart TV's and even my Desktop computer. The two device capablitiy is convenient and the phone conversations sound pretty good for both parties. The battery life is really good and charging is pretty fast.

Great sound, annoying features

(2) The low-end frequencies are great. I do music production in these using FL Studio and Pro Tool and they perform great, better than my Beats Studio 2. (3) The Talk-to-Chat feature is annoying. I usually turn it off b/c the headphones will pick up on me singing or laughing at a movie and switch me to hearing everything around me. (4) The touch volume is annoying it doesn't allow you to slide your finger from low to max volume, instead you have to do a series of quick swipes to change the volume.

The noise canceling function is effective in low-frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
To change the volume continuously: Swipe up or down and hold. Release at the desired volume level.

The battery life is excellent as well. When the headphones die, it takes around 5-10 minutes for it to charge all the way up and it lasts a long time.

I had the 710n, which sounded good but is noticably smaller in the ears, leading to discomfort on long flights. Battery life is epic - easy two full days of use. Sony tends to be a bit bass heavy, but the app allows adjustment to your tastes. Noise cancelling is a big step up from the 710n - easily keeps up with an airplane cabin. Keep an eye out for sales as you can usually get them for $50 off or more.

Amazing, Intuitive Noise Cancelling Headphones

They are my first foray into the world of noise cancelling headphones, and they surely don't disappoint. The noise cancelling feature is absolutely amazing, in that they cancel or reduce background ambient noises to a slight hum and greatly reduce the noise level of things that are louder and closer to the wearer. This allows for the best enjoyment of music in a more blissful environment. I also make good use of the quick attention feature, which requires the user to place their hand over the right earcup to pump in surrounding sounds and noises that allow one to have a quick conversation or listen for announcements (maybe if you are waiting for a flight or a train, for example). Of course, the same effect can be achieved by simply removing the headphones, or really, just the left earcup. Inside the left earcup is a proximity sensor that detects if you are wearing the XM4s - moving it away from your ear or taking the headphones off completely pauses whatever you are listening too and automatically resumes it once the headphones are back on your head. The touch controls on the right earcup are intuitive, and easy to learn as well. Lastly, don't forget about the accompanying app! From here you can create your own customized sound profiles if you don't like the way the headphones sound out of the box. There are also other features that may interest you that you can toggle on/off from the app as well, such as Speak-to-Chat (which is like quick attention mode but uses the sound of your voice to trigger it) and Adaptive Sound Control (which may toggle Noise Cancelling off if the headphones detect you are walking a lot so you are aware of traffic/your surroundings while you walk around the city) as well as others that I won't go into! Overall, a worthy purchase - these often go on sale for around $300 or if you have some Best Buy gift cards and want to treat yourself - this is the way. But hey, if you want to pay full price, I won't judge you - these are well worth it!

I added a bluetooth 4.0 dongle and it worked fine but when a call rings when connected to both the phone and Laptop while using microsoft teams I notice that the Laptop switches to the laptop microphone which if you are not aware public will hear you very low. I know it is a microsoft issue. It would been better if the cable for wired connection would have had a micropone so that in this case we could just go fully two way comunication wired . I did it by purchasing a cable and a Lavalier Mic and a spliting cable for both headphones and Mic. Another good feature would have been to have bluetooth connected to the phone and have audio and mic wired to the laptop . Again both devices can be connected via bluetooth and works great but the laptop is not reliable.
