Please take note that the noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.

A drop in sound quality

They sounded great. Sadly, these do not. The bass is weak and muddy, and it seems like there is loudness equalization applied to your audio that you can't turn off. It makes everything sound over-processed and boomy. Using the accompanying app's setting and EQ adjustments does not seem to fix this.
