Fantastic "Budget" Over-Ear NC Headphones
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love testing and reviewing headphones. I have previously owned and reviewed 5 different over-the-ear noise cancelling headphones including B&O BEOPLAY, Sennheiser HD1, Sony WH-1000XM4, Sony 1000-XM2...plus Sony in-ear WF-1000XM3, Sony SP600N and non-noise canceling Sony XB-950B1, Sony WH-L600, and Sony WH-XB700. Some of these headphones retailed for upwards of $500. Until now, however, it was hard to get my hands on a pair of "budget conscious" over-ear noise canceling headphones I was willing to recommend. As a broadcast audio technician, I set a high standard for sound when using headphones and listen to sound and music a bit differently than the average user. Consequently, I am very picky when I review any brand/model of headphones or speakers. Clarity, loudness, bass, battery life, etc. are all important but I tend to listen for what is NOT heard in cheaper headphones. The Sony WH-CH720N, first and foremost, has better than average noise canceling and average to above average sound quality out of the box. The headphones are significantly lighter than my more expensive Sony WH-1000XM4 but also lack some of the features of the WH-1000XM4 such as "touch pad" controls, instead utilizing the less expensive and more common "button" controls for volume, skipping, etc. on the right ear cup. These headphones feel a bit more plastic than the more expensive models, but that is a fair trade-off if it brings the price down by more than half. NOISE CANCELING Working at home, listening to music with Noise Canceling turned on, I cannot hear conversations in the other room, nor the television, nor my tapping on the keyboard. Turn the NC OFF and my music becomes "background noise" to everything happening around me. COMFORT AND BUILD These headphones weigh about 2.5oz less than the Sony WH-1000XM4 (more expensive) headphones which makes them lightweight and comfortable. The cups completely surround my ears. Although mostly plastic, the headband is reinforced (likely aluminum) while the cups and pivot points are plastic. BATTERY AND COMPONENTS These headphones are rated at 35 hours of wireless listening with a 10-minute quick charge that will get you an hour of wireless play. You will need to provide the charger as the headphones do NOT come with a charger. Nor is there a bag or case for storing the headphones, something higher-end, more expensive models have included in the past. There is a USB-A to USB-C cable plus an AUX cable should you choose to use the headphones via an AUX port. APP The Sony app will allow you to EQ the headphones and tweak environment/NC settings. SOUND AND MUSIC QUALITY Out of the box the EQ is flat and the sound reflects it. Using the Sony app you can quickly select a pre-configured EQ or tweak your own EQ. I listen to ALT, ALT ROCK, ROCK, CLASSIC ROCK, METAL and HIP HOP primarily. I usually test with Pearl Jam, Twenty-One Pilots, Jimi and 50 Cent with my EQ in a "V" or "U" pattern heavier on bass and treble, and clear bass (activated in the app) set at 4. All 4 genres sound great with deep, punching bass in the alt-rock/hip-hop and tight vocals/guitars with my grunge and classic rock selections. My $400 headphones are just a bit more robust and crisp with vocals but at half the cost, the sound quality of these headphones, once tweaked, is a 9 out of 10. When used for calls, clarity of voice and audio is above average. I highly recommend the Sony - WHCH720N Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones. The only concern I would have is the "plastic" factor for anyone who is rough on headphones--constantly taking them off/on, putting them in a purse or backpack, etc.

Great price but uncomfortable
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These may work for some people, but they didn't work for me. The main issue was that they were just straight up uncomfortable. They are light, but something was causing pain on the right side of my head. It may have been that the cups are shallow, so if they are not positioned just right, the inner workings can poke you in the ear. BTW, I have small and flat ears, so I imagine average sized ears would have the same problem. They also did feel pretty cheap, but I was mainly going to wear them in my home office for work, so I wasn't worried about durability. But I couldn't wear them for more than 10 minutes without feeling discomfort, which is a showstopper. I returned these and got the Bose QC45 headphones. If comfort is your top priority, the Bose QC45s are much better (also more expensive).

Posted .Hi JamyaD,
Thanks for sharing your review and experience with the WHCH720N. Your feedback about the noise canceling function is greatly appreciated. For optimum performance, make sure that the software version of the headphones is up-to-date (via the Sony Headphones Connect app).
The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices. When the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app is turned on, the wearer's actions, like walking or running, are detected. The noise canceling function is automatically adjusted and the Ambient Sound Mode may be activated according to these actions. To make the most of the noise canceling function, turn off the Adaptive Sound Control, and try to turn on the noise canceling function manually when you need it.
Hope this helps. In case you need further assistance, please email us at socialsupport@am.sony.com with the following details:

Thanks for the review and for sharing your experience. We're truly sorry to hear that the WH-CH720N headphones aren't working as they should, especially since they were a gift for your daughter. We can definitely understand how disappointing that is.
Let’s try a few simple steps to see if we can get them charging:
-If the headphones are very hot or very cold, they might not charge. Let them sit at room temperature for a bit.
-Reset and initialize the headphones. Here are the links where you can find instructions for each procedure.

Major disappointment…
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was excited to get these wireless headphones because it’s Sony… I have purchased many Sony wired headphones over the years and the quality was always great. These however aren’t the same.. They are cheaply constructed and the call quality literally lasted less than 2 weeks before my clients could no longer hear me in the built in microphone… it’s very disappointing because I spent $99 and had high expectations because its Sony and my $19.99 corded headphones worked far better… I can’t say I should have splurged and bought the more expensive ones because of the level of disappointment. Just wished they performed as advertised

Posted .Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention, WJPE.
We are truly sorry to hear that you experienced difficulty getting your WH-CH720N headphones to connect to the Bluetooth on your TV. We understand how frustrating this can be when trying to enjoy a seamless wireless experience.
Bluetooth compatibility and pairing procedures can sometimes vary significantly between different TV manufacturers and models. To help you diagnose and resolve this issue, we would need a little more information about your television.
Common reasons for Bluetooth pairing failure include:
TV Bluetooth Profile: Some older or less feature-rich TVs may only support Bluetooth for remote controls or very specific accessories, not for general audio output.
Pairing Mode: The TV or the headphones may not have been fully in pairing mode at the same time.
We would like to help you determine if your TV model is compatible and guide you through the correct pairing process. Please contact our support team directly at https://us.esupport.sony.com/support/s/support-contact?language=en_US&category=headphones so our specialists can assist with troubleshooting.
We appreciate you choosing Sony and look forward to helping you get connected!

Posted .Hi AmyC,
Thank you for your time writing this review. We're glad to hear you like how the WHCH720N works. However, we're sorry to hear some issues that you are having with the headphones. Allow us to help make this a better experience. The foam padding on the earcups helps to isolate the sound from the outside environment and helps reduce sound leakage, which means that the sound is contained within the earcups and therefore more intense. This could also contribute to the feeling of "feeling the sound" through the foam.
Also, you can use the WHCH720N headphones without connecting them to the Sony Headphone| Connect app. These headphones will still work as regular Bluetooth headphones and use them to listen music, make phone calls, and user other audio features.
However, connecting the headphones to the app provides additional functionality and customization options. For more details, please refer to this link: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/2966/v1/en/contents/TP1000776844.html

Posted .Hi BethanyS!
Thanks for reaching out and sharing your feedback about the WH-CH720N headphones. We're genuinely sorry to hear that they feel a bit cheap and that the sound quality is not fulfilling your expectations.
We have a quick recommendation that might really help you get better sound: Try adjusting the EQ (Equalizer) settings in the Sony | Sound Connect app.
You can usually find a preset there that better suits your taste, or you can manually adjust the bass, mids and highs to really dial in the sound you're looking for. Sometimes a small change in the app can make a huge difference in the perceived quality and richness of the audio.
We hope this helps!
We appreciate your review of our Sony headphones and apologize for your experience.
Sincerely,
Estefany

Posted .Thank you for your review, Kenny. We are sorry to hear that you are not happy with your WH-CH720N headphones and that you had trouble connecting them to your smart TV. This is certainly not the experience we want you to have, and we want to help you resolve this.
The WH-CH720N headphones are designed to connect via Bluetooth, but not all TVs are compatible with Bluetooth audio output. We recommend checking your TV's user manual or specifications to see if it supports connecting Bluetooth headphones. If it does, there may be a specific pairing procedure required.
We also want to ensure you're getting the best possible sound quality. Our headphones are designed to deliver a rich audio experience, but it's possible the audio settings on your TV or source device may need to be adjusted.
For further assistance with connectivity or to troubleshoot the sound, please don't hesitate to reach out to our customer support team. We're here to help you get the most out of your headphones.
Thank you for choosing Sony.
