Wow!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great speaker! This little thing sounds better than the huge XB7 at low to medium volume with much better bass. If you need a small speaker in a medium size room like kitchen, and enjoy listening to music at medium volume then this will be the best choice. A lot of other speakers need much higher volume levels to achive enough bass effect, but this can do it at much lower levels with Extra Bass switch, and therefore it beats the JBL Extreme. Sound is soft, not as harsh as JBL extreme or even Onyx 4. On Sony web site the frequency response shows 20 Hz–20,000 Hz, which makes sense given how great this sounds (not many speakers have this type of range). I have not tried pairing them but it is very tempting to get another one. My kids love the lights :)

Solid Sound at Moderate Volume
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall I find the sound on this speaker to be average but nothing spectacular. It sounds good at low to moderate volume, but at higher volume it looses resolution and the mid range begins to overpower everything else. It fills a moderately large room without distortion. The extra bass setting is nice at providing a richer low-end without becoming too boomy. It's a portable speaker and will last all day on a charge. It even includes a USB port to charge other devices. It is very sturdy and a bit heavy, so it's not something that you're likely to take everywhere, but is perfect for parties and outings. The lights are a fun touch. I thought they might be silly, but I actually kind of enjoy them. There's a smartphone app that allows you to change the lights' behavior or turn them off completely. There's also a three-band EQ in the app. I found myself boosting the high end with most tracks. There's an aux-in port on the back for other devices.

Good product overall, setup a bit difficult
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great product overall - the sound is great and it's very easy to use - once it's set up. I consider myself a fairly advanced technology user and I had a fair amount of difficulty setting it up. I first paired the device to laptop - but there were issues with the sound skipping (apparently this is a known issue with the OS I'm using and one I didn't care to troubleshoot it, since this is designed to be used with a phone). So I tried to follow the directions to set it up with my phone - and had no luck. Went to the web for help and finally decided to hard reset the speaker. This worked and let me pair my phone. Trying to setup the apps took several tries, but I eventually got it working. It was also showing the device multiple times in the apps at one point. The directions in the box were also not very helpful - I had to go to Sony's website and forums to get it to work. The difficulty with setup is the reason I dropped the rating a star. Manufacturers have also gone bare minimum with instructions included with most devices - but fortunately their website was helpful. Again, this is a great product overall and the sound is great, the setup just didn't go very smoothly for me.

Great speaker best paired in two
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Let me start off by saying you definitely want two of these. I did some research and was pretty much locked onto a Harman Kardon Go & Play, which is without a doubt a far superior BT speaker. However, I needed something quick, since my Klipsch speakers gave up the day I had planned a deck party. When I saw and heard the XB40 at my local Best Buy store, I was pretty fascinated. The sound wasn't too shabby and the light show these little things put up were kind of intriguing. So I decided I wanted to have two of them, to pair them into a real stereo set of speakers. Boy, was I impressed. I sit out on my deck now almost every night, listening to my favorite tunes! Pros: - battery life is fantastic. They have been playing all night and were still at 40% battery - if you crank up the high tones in the EQ the app provides, they sound 100% better - to get some bass out of them, you need to place them strategically. Don't expect the ground to be shaking, but with a little help of resonance, you can enjoy some pretty clear bass lines. - Sudden rain shower? No problem! - The light show is an amazing extra! It also makes sure that, when you're out camping, nobody steps on them :) Cons: - firmware seems a little buggy. I had to reset them once or twice, before I could get them to sing in stereo - They are not HK Go + Play :) All in all, a great choice if you're not expecting bass below a felt 50Hz and you need something robust that can brave the weather and some other party type abuse.

Good quality speaker but...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I returned this speaker because it has very annoying ways of "saving battery" on 70% it starts lowering the volume and starts telling you to charge it. it was super annoying.

Great Sound
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This portable speaker is awesome. It has great sound for its size and can fill the whole room. The extra bass option is great by giving you a nice deep sound that you can feel the vibrations. The light effects give a nice touch to any party. My only wishes are that the speaker charged by usb (not proprietary) and that the speaker had physical buttons to skip forward and backward. All and all, this is a great system.

Didn’t work properly
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Second time I used it, it started going out and volume would get low. It was plugged up so it shouldn’t have been a power issue. I was pretty frustrated about that, luckily I was within my 14 days so o returned it!

Amazing sound for it's size.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sony XB40 packs great sound for its size. The Mega Bass adds a nice touch of low end for songs that need an extra kick. Great for Rap and EDM. Might sound a bit muddy if you're listening to acoustic heavy music. You can chain up to 10 of these together with party chain. You can also just use two of them and have them act as stereo L and R. Charged battery last about a day at a decent volume. Got a great deal at Best Buy.

Friendly looking speaker
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a really nice bluetooth speaker if you can get it on sale. Long battery life, good quality sound, nice features, and love the lights. The look reminds me of the robot Number 5 from the movie Short Circuit. Sets it apart from the pack. Have also had no problems using two speakers in tandem as far connecting and changing from mono on both to stereo (one left one right) sound. Size isn't too large or heavy either. Only downside so far is the limited volume output once the battery reduces to a certain level, around 50 percent. Highly recommended overall.
