First, I want to make it clear that I am not an audiophile to any extent. When I buy headphones I am just looking for wireless headphones with a good bluetooth range and decent sound. These headphones definitely fit my guidelines, and have a few additional things I like. A) the extra bass is much better than I have heard on any product before, B) the battery really does last a long time, C) the headphones are really flexible and are made out of good material, and D) the smartphone app that goes with these headphones is really easy to understand. However, when it comes to the smartphone app it just doesn't do enough. It is really simple. The best I can say about it is that it allows me to change the bass level. I rarely use it at all. Last time I looked the rating for it on the Google Play Store is 2.5, so other people are clearly not impressed with it either. I do still keep the app on my smartphone though so I can adjust the bass that way if I want. Another problem I have encountered is occasionally static when I am listening to music right next to my phone. It is not terrible static (I can still mostly hear the music) but it is annoying. Another plus is that it does come with a cord so I can connect my phone to the headphones if I would prefer or if I run out of battery or something, and the audio is pretty good when using the cord. I do want to mention the bluetooth range is the best I have ever experienced with any wireless headphones before. These are definitely a good option when looking for headphones that provide extra bass and good sound, so I do recommend them.

This is the third pair I've had in less than one year. I've had to exchange them because they keep breaking at the same spot. It must be a poor design & manufacturers defect. I've never had a problem like this with any other headset.

The headphones broke less than 3 months after purchase, they just snapped off right by the ear muffs during normal use by adults. They were used probably less than 2 dozen times. For the price you should get a better quality product

They broke right after we hit the year mark which was ridiculous and to fix them was almost as much as buying new pair which is what we did. So if you're looking for longevity and durability these are NOT the headset you want.

I received my XB950B1 headset through BestBuy's Tech Insider program on March 26, so I have used them for almost a month with the following audio sources before writing this review: - Motorola Turbo (XT1254) cell phone (Bluetooth mode and using the supplied 3.5mm Audio cable) - Motorola Turbo 2 (Bluetooth) - Microsoft Surface Book (Bluetooth mode and Audio cable) - Creative Zen Vision Media Player (Audio cable) PROS: There is a lot to like about this headset. 1. Although the headband is just a bit tighter than I prefer, the ear cups remain comfortable even after extended wear (more than 2 to 3 hours). 2. Multimedia Audio quality is in the "very good" to "excellent" range, as I expect from Sony products. 3. Sound quality during phone calls is also Good. Occasionally a caller mentioned that I sounded "far away" at their end, but this was not consistent across calls with those individuals, so phone reception at either end could be the culprit. 4. Battery life is excellent, and recharging is simple using the supplied 19.75" micro USB cable. I did not specifically test for the maximum run time provided by a full charge, but I was able to finish several sessions of 2-3 hours before deciding to recharge. 5. I really like the ability to use these as "normal", wired headphones using the 48" long, 3.5mm stereo audio cable. Of course, this method only allows for incoming audio (no microphone out), but you can charge the headset while listening if you use both cables. Be aware that plugging the audio cable into the headset automatically disconnected the headset's active bluetooth connection. So in "wired mode" the Bass Boost, Volume control, and other headset hardware controls do not work. 6. Bass Boost can greatly improve the sound of incoming Bluetooth audio that needs it, but I found that the headset drivers have excellent bass response, and I rarely felt the need to use the Boost. 7. This headset paired easily with cell phones and my MS Surface Book, and it remembers pairing info for up to eight devices. 8. I like the simple, clean look of this headset. Sony kept things classy, rejecting the fads of ridiculous, blinding, RGB LEDs for no good reason, and pulsing LED logo lighting that seems to be everywhere the last few years. The 2 small, unobtrusive LED status indicators serve their intended purpose without over-kill, and there is a small, silver "SONY" logo on each ear-can. CONS: Like any technology designed for use by actual human beings, there are some compromises made, and things I would have done differently: 1. The headset gives voice announcements for functions like Power on/off, Bass Boost on/off, Bluetooth connected/disconnected, etc. During these announcements all incoming audio is completely "blanked out" for a few seconds, which I find annoying. I would really like to be able to turn that off! - This is my largest complaint, and the reason for the 4.5 star rating: Voice announcements are non-critical functions, yet they temporarily keep the headset from performing it's primary function of reproducing high-quality incoming audio. 2. I did have some hiccups using the headset's media controls with some mobile Media players. The play/pause and next/previous controls caused occasional lock-ups in the Android versions of VLC and BS Player. I can't say for certain whether the headset, the app, or the Android OS is at fault here. . 3. Sony's "Headphones" app for Android has VERY limited functionality at this point. It currently only allows you to enable/disable bass boost and adjust the Bass Boost level, select a sound environment (Club, Arena, Live Stage, etc), and check the battery charge level. When I learned that Sony had an app that worked with this headset, I was hoping for a more integrated media app that added a media player and playlist editor to those functions. I hope Sony adds those soon. 4. The 3.5mm audio input jack is recessed into the left ear "can" far enough that the plugs on most of my existing audio cables will not seat into the jack fully. The supplied cable is not long enough for some things I would like to do, so I have to use a stereo extension cable. This is a fairly minor gripe since this is designed and marketed as a wireless headset, so I don't fault Sony too much for this one. TO SUM THINGS UP: I like the MDR-XB950B1 headset a lot. In fact, I find myself using them far more often than I would normally use a headset. There is more to like than dislike here, and in my opinion, a product that makes you actually want to use it more often than usual has certainly gotten the important things right.

The headphones sound great especially if you like bass. However, the "hinge" for the right driver broke after a few months. After searching around it I found that it's a common issue with them.

First and foremost, these cans offer all of the sound quality I would expect from Sony. They sound great and were easy to set up. My first concern with these were the size - they are thick. Thicker, I believe, than any wireless over ear headphones I have tried. This is not really a nit - many people seem to like these chunkier style headphones. A note on the sound - in particular the bass. Wow. That is definitely the focus of this product, and Sony delivers. In fact, listening to some music, I was convinced that someone was pounding on my front door. Not only was the bass there, but it felt like it was off in the distance. For the record, I am not a 'thumpy music' guy, but I can see those who do like club music LOVING these headphones. A quick comment about the app - I'm not sure why any headphone manufacturers release these. Although Sony telly you to install through the app, the app never saw my headphones until I connected via the apple setup menu. As for fine tuning the sound experience (concert hall, etc) - I don't get it. Yes, the audio changes. Maybe some folks need this level of control. It all seems gimmicky to me. All in all - a great headset. Worked nicely with my iPhone 7plus.

    Excellent pair of headphones

People, if you are looking for a great pair of headphones at a reasonable price, look no further than the sony mdr xb950b1's. I got them in red and I gotta say, it looks pretty sleek! Back to the review, the sound is crisp, and a significant upgrade from the 950bt's. The base isn't overpowering to the point where you have to turn it off, it blends very well with the music. I listened to a variety of genres from rap to classical and it sounds very good. The extra base makes the experience a little better, and even with it off, it still sounds great. They are very comfortable so you should be able to keep them on for long listening sessions. In my opinion, they are worth the $200 retail price. I am quite disappointed however with the lack of a hard case as these pair of headphones desperately need one. These are very durable and shouldn't be breaking anytime soon. Now for those of you debating whether or not you should get the MDR XB950N1 vs the MDR XB950B1 (the pair I have). If you did not own the previous MDR XB950BT, I would recommend the B1's over the N1's. $50 more for noise cancelling and a pouch are not deal breaking. I actually tested the N1's out myself and I have to say, they were quite bulky, and uncomfortable. The noise cancelling was decent but not great as it was I could hear the slightest ambient noises coming through. Furthermore, there is a massive sound leak with the N1's and that may prove to be quite awkward in public places. Although they were great, I wouldn't say they were worth $200. The MDR XB 950B1's are exactly the same, it sounds exactly like the N1's except the obvious lack of noise cancelling. Save your $50 and go with the B1's so you can use that other $50 for a hard case lol. However, if you have the BT's, don't bother upgrading and save your money. I am an iphone user and the B1's connected fine, and sound great with no problems. The BT's on the other hand had a subtle buzz which proved to be an annoyance over time in which I returned them and payed the extra $100 for the B1's. These are an excellent pair of headphones to which I see myself using these for a good amount of time, hopefully forever.

I just got these and seriously these things are shockingly awesome. Well not too shocking, it is Sony. I have a pair of Beats and thought that since these were on such a great sale I would give this a shot and wow I am so glad. They are lite, when they are on they fit really well and hardly notice them. The Bass effect is insane and feels like you just dove into the music. Look forward to much more use.
