I purchased these for $119.99 and feel like I got a great deal. I have owned Bose and Power Beats and paid a lot more. If you are looking for a descent set without spending all the money, give these a listen at the store and see how they compare. The extra bass makes a difference. Happy so far with them.

Sony XB950N1 Noise Canceling Wireless Headphones There is definitely a difference in the sound experience using these headphones vs. in-canal ear buds. Of course since the speakers are larger, the sound is much better. Bass is enhanced as advertised (easily adjustable with the app), and mid-range and highs come through well. I'm not an audiophile so not going to get hung up on the precise specifications, I just like music and know what sounds good to me - these headphones definitely have a good sound. My "testing" is to listen to my favorite music, and if I am hearing more clarity and separation of the instruments and vocals, then I feel I have an improvement in quality. Switching to the noise cancellation mode provides pretty much the same feeling of "music only" that you get with in-canal buds, although that does seem to cut down on the battery life by about 1/3. Battery life in general works for a full day of listening, and the phone runs low before the headsets. Only exception is when in noise cancellation mode as noted. Very comfortable cups on the ear and overall size is a little on the large size but fits comfortably on my "average" adult head without pressing on the ears (good for all day music and puttering around) - if you are a petite size you might want to try on a pair at the store before purchase. The headphones definitely have a streamlined modern "cool factor" but are not over-the-top like some headphones that are definitely geared towards a younger crowd. These phones may be targeted towards a more mature customer (older like me) who wants a good wireless sound set of cans but doesn't want to look like an over aged hipster. If you want a "showy" (or "show off") set of phones then you are probably not reading this review anyway. If you want a good set of wireless cans with a more mature, but modern, look - you are in the right place. Bluetooth pairing was easy, and the Sony Connect app allows me to use the same app for Sony earbuds and headphones - easily switching between the sections for each one. Automatic voice prompts when powering up and connecting, and warning when battery level is getting low. The android app has a little bit of a learning curve and poking around with the settings, as with all "fine tuning" apps for music, and provides a good selection of pre-sets and the ability to customize the bass "punch" if you want to get it just right for your particular tastes. I'm don't particularly care for a lot of "head thumping" with the bass, and appreciate being able to reduce the bass to a lower level to avoid spilling my coffee when sipping and listening at the same time. Playing around with the settings to see what happens when adjustments in sound quality/level/tone are made is not that big of a chore and gave me a good idea of the full range of capabilities. Once done with that, mostly I am the kind of listener that chooses a good setting for my personal tastes and then pretty much leaves things alone. The app is really a must-have if you want to quickly use all the different features of these headphones. The various buttons on the headphones perform the same functions, but it takes a while to get the hang of all the different buttons and where they are located. Every set of buds and headphones has their little switches and buttons, and when switching from one product to the next it gets a little confusing (for me) to remember which button is where and does what without taking them off and looking. Maybe that's me, but I prefer the ease of using the app so I'm sure I know what I am doing when "tweaking" the settings. These fold up for travel and have a soft pouch included, but I like to provide a little more protection for my electronics so will be looking for a hard case that fits. No big problems as right now I have a small plastic food container that will work just fine for a case when I need to pack the headphones. Tried these on several phone calls "can you hear me now?" to see how they worked and no problems. Don't personally expect to use these for a lot of phone conversations but it is nice to have the capability - just need to set my phone to "priority only calls" and let the rest go to voice mail while I enjoy my music. The headphone market has lots to choose from and there are always products that cost more and probably sound better, but if you want a good set of cans with some nice features from a name-brand manufacturer these are a good purchase. If you are a super-audiophile and looking for the best of the best of the best, then you probably aren't looking at these anyway. Otherwise, I think for the smooth streamlined appearance, size, comfort, and quality - the Sony XB950N1 headphones are a good choice.

    The MDRXB950BT grew up

The originals which I had for 2 years and still function fine have been through the ringer rain, snow, exercise biking to and from work and classes and all the abuse I could through at them until October 31st were they broke one one of the arms. The new N1s are balanced with bass highlighted to subwoofers strapped to you head when you want it. The normal sound profile is amazing compared to the previous version the highs aren't as tiny and the bass is lesser slightly than the previous even with bass boost. This is ok how ever cause they went from that raving wild highschooler brother of your to the one that will put on a suit and dress shirt for the right occasion while still keeping it wild on the weekends. I'm ultimately a bass head but lately I've been breaking out with my normal EDM and Rap heavy playlists for more classical, rock and country and the BTs were terrible for this the high where bad the loss seemed to unresponsive with bass best off and on distorted the the rest of the music. The N1s don't do this and are a much better balanced headphone. The build is even beefier which I like and red trim gone which gives a stealth sleeper look that is awesome vs the other flashy V Modas and Beats. Although if you have the extra money for the WH1000XM3 get those the demo unit conveniently placed under a massive and noisy air vent was amazing with noise canceling and sound the if The N1s had their noise cancelling abilities these would win hands down dead ringer

Got these on a crazy good deal. Love that you can adjust the bass strength and that they are noise canceling (however, the noise isn't the best out there). Were very simple to set up and sound great! Love taking these when I travel because they fold up and can be stored with ease. Battery life is great and these can go pretty loud. Would recommend, especially if you see them on sale.

Original model (Sony MDR-XB950BT's) are better

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I had the Sony MDR-XB950BT headphones (not the B1's or N1's, the original 950BT's) they broke on the hinges after about half a year after getting them so I decided to purchase the Sony MDRXB950N1's because I thought it would be an upgrade from the original model, but I was wrong. These headphones (the N1's) have about 15-20% LESS bass than the original BT's! (both bluetooth mode with BASS BOOST ON and MAX volume on phone and headphones) the sound quality is just slightly better on the N1's but lacks the life that the BT's put into my music. Sony must have used cheaper parts for their newer models because I also tried the B1's and they also have the same BASS issue as the N1's. I am NOT impressed Sony, you could have done better. I like your original 950BT's much better than any of your newer headphones in the extra bass family. Whenever I go to max volume and play bass heavy songs like I used to on my previous model, I get this static-like sound almost like I'm trying to do something the drivers can't handle. (That has NEVER happened in the original BT's). Sure, your previous model, the BT's had a durability issue around the hinges, but I can also see that Issue coming up in the B1's too because the hinges on there look the same! You DID beef up the hinges on the N1's, but is that really something to give up BASS for? Sure they have noise cancelling and they fold up, but the noise cancelling isint really that good and the original BT's did fine for blocking out noise. Not to mention your newer headphones are also getting quieter and more passive sounding. I say if anyone here is a TRUE basshead, I would go for the ORIGINAL 950BT's. If you are not as big of a fan for bass and dont care much about "life" in music, sure you can go for the N1's or B1's. But at the end of the day, the drivers in the original 950BT's are just a higher quality set of drivers than any of the newer extra bass headphones Sony has to offer. I hope my review helps.

Disclaimer: I have never owned or used "noise cancelling" headphones. And generally, any bluetooth ones I've had cut out too often and too easily (even sometimes when my phone was only in my pocket). I travel almost weekly on airplanes, and I've often seen folks with big headphones. I've mentally poked fun at them because they seem so large and unwieldy. Then I tried these Sony headphones on - in their default mode, noise canceling is on but bass enhancement is off. Even still, I could hear very rich bass notes (I am a former bass player, so I often listen for that in my music). I also watched a few movies off of my tablet while on a flight and could hear both the dialogue and effects really well. Many times, I was able to hear the overhead announcements from the flight attendants pretty well, which was surprising given the "noise canceling" part. Then I took them off because my ears were getting warm and I heard SO much more of the airplane noise, air movement, screaming child a few rows away that I wasn't hearing. I don't know that I can speak any more highly of these headphones, they're really great, and they last at least the advertised battery time (I'm still going without a charge past the amount in the manual). I think the only downsides (and these are a stretch and perhaps not specific to these headphones): it's difficult for me to fall asleep with such large headphones on while on a plane, people can't really hear my voice well when trying to use the microphone part for a phone call, and bluetooth devices that stream to the headset make all the difference. For example, I was initially getting a lot of "stutter" in my music when paired with my phone. I restarted it for other reasons and then poof, it hasn't dropped at all. That's probably good advice for any bluetooth listening device - perhaps don't blame it until you're confident your source isn't trying to do too much besides playing music.

Great sound quality, overall happy with purchase

Pretty happy with this purchase. Bought them solely for the noise cancelling, and it's pretty great if the music is playing - I can't hear any of my surroundings in the office and I don't have to have the volume up too high. Without music, I can hear everything very clearly. They are comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I typically wear mine for 4-6 hours a day. I don't like that turning the bass and noise cancelling on/off stops the music and announces what you just did. I also do not like that it automatically shuts off after a period of time with no use. I understand the battery saving aspect, but I frequently take them off and leave my desk at work, only to come back a few minutes later and have to turn them back on. I'm not allowed to have my phone in my department at work, so I have to leave the room to start the music again or leave the music playing while I leave. Overall the sound quality is awesome, but there have been days I use my Beats simply because they won't shut off on me when I pause Pandora and walk away. I'd rather have to charge them more often.

    Great but with a catch....

These headphones were fantastic when I first bought them around a year ago. I usually only use them once a day for about an hour at the gym and for the first while they were fantastic! Sound quality was great for the price and bass was really strong and fun to be able to turn on and off. The noise cancellation is super good as well. Now for the catch... These headphones are very comfortable to wear... or they were.... After about eight months use I noticed they started getting significantly less snug to my head to the point now that if im doing bench, I may as well take them off because they will just slip off anyway. it is super frustrating. outside of that though they have been great. I will need a change now though because I cant have headphones that wont stay on my head.
