Great Headphones for Long Flights!

Held my review back a bit until I had a chance to use these on a flight.
I have to say this is the best noise cancelling performance I have experienced. The difference between having it on and off is staggering. I was sitting right beside the wing where the engines were located on my flight. With Noise Cancelling off, the rumble was so loud, I could barely hear the music and movies I was listening to. When I tuned on noise cancelling, the jet engine noise was completely gone and only a bit of the higher frequency noise remained - I think pretty much all noise cancelling headphones work mainly on low frequency noise. With noise cancelling off and some soft music playing I was able to sleep for 3 hours on a 4 hour flight.
Other nice things about the noise cancelling:
1. On these headphones, there is not any extra hiss when noise cancelling is turned on, it is silent. Other noise cancelling phones I've used often have a slight hiss if you are using noise cancelling but not playing anything through them.
2. Also, Other noise cancelling headphones increase the volume when noise cancelling is on, perhaps to increase the perceived effect of the noise cancelling. These do not do that either.
Extra Bass effect - I wasn't sure I would care either way about this feature, but I actually like it. I think this is really a personal preference though whether you want the bass enhanced for your music or not.
App - minimalist, allows you to choose between a handful of effects like concert hall, arena, etc... In the end I think my music sounds richer and more full with these effects turned off. App also allows you to turn on/off noise cancelling and control the amount of bass enhancement you are using (on a scale from -10 to + 10). It also shows general information - Head phone model number, picture and battery level.
General sound quality is also great for both music and movies. Sound is rich and full, does not feel like any part of the frequency range was compromised. Dialog in movies was clear as well as sound FX, very immersive. Volume range also has no issues, can make this very quiet and or very loud.
Form - I really like the simple minimalist design here. All the buttons have a different feel so it is easy to find them without having to take your headphones off - The power button is slightly recessed, the bass effect button is slightly raised and longer in length, the noise cancelling button is round and bumped out. The volume rockers has a bump on + direction and the next/previous track button is a slider.
Fit - These fit my head and ears really well. The cups cover my ears completely and the ample cushioning on them makes them comfortable to wear for hours. The cups themselves swivel and extend down from the head band to adjust for different sized heads. I did not have any issues keeping these on for 4+ hours.
Battery life and blue tooth - Battery life seems to be as advertised, even with noise cancelling and extra bass turned on over the 6 hours of use, the battery level only fell about 25% or so. I did not use NFC, but used Bluetooth without any issues. Range is over 30 feet (I haven't tested any further so far).
In any case, these are the best headphones I've ever owned.

I have always been an ear bud / over the ear smaller is better headphones person. Not after these! I have been using them for about 1 month and absolutely love them. I thought the bulky headphones were a weird look on people these days but for the quality of sound and noise canceling properties; I am learning to live with it :). These are very comfortable and light enough, that I do not feel weighted down. The Blue Tooth tech on these is impressive as well. I can mow my modest yard without buffering. Whiling doing so, I set my phone in the garage and mow the property freely with clarity of sound. I turn on the noise-canceling feature and do not hear the droning of the mower and pleasantly listen to my music app. I do not really use these as a device to make or receive phone calls but the few I did were perfect. I like the buttons and their integrated ability to control phone features while in use. I did download the Sony app but never needed to utilize; as I never had an issue with connectivity. I feel like these are a solid well build product. Like I said, I have been using them in the yard, on the go, and all around have just been a bit rough with them. Between several other brands I have had the pleasure of personally using these are the hands down the best headphones I have ever put on. These even trumped a pair of exercise headphones I recently got; I thought would never find the back shelf.

Beware of cheap plastic at stress point!

No issues with the basic function/performance of the headphones, aside from confusion about whether they are off or on, leading to a run down battery. After being quite satisfied with them for just over a year, one side of the plastic bracket supporting the Left side ear cup snapped when I picked it up. Despite being fewer than three months out of warranty, Sony Customer Service said they only cover "software" defects, but not physical damage, despite the fact that there was no accident or undue force that caused the plastic to break. In my book, this is a manufacturing issue, but Sony says otherwise and claims there haven't been any complaints about this type of breakage. Buyer beware. Will be looking for another pair of headphones with a more robust ear cup attachment, and made by another manufacturer willing to stand behind the quality of their products.

The durability is so bad its not worth the investment even with the protection plan.
I only used this pair for running on the treadmill and light circuit routines at the gym.
Warning, I highly recommend you purchase a protection plan because you may have a issue within a few weeks to a year with a crack at headphone hinge that you can't fix or get a replacement part for (even with extreme care and light usage). I will just take a loss on it ($250+). This is my 3rd pair and I refuse to keep spending more money at Best Buy paying for the option to exchange it and then purchasing another protection plan renewal everytime they break despite how much I liked the sound quality and comfort. Frustrating because I liked them so much at 1st but it has a major design flaw...sadly I can't continue to recommend this product. (Picture: Less than 6 months/like new appearance with this pair and the hinge is broke).

Excellent headset

This an excellent headset for just about any purpose. They fit nicely over the head and sit comfortably without being too heavy. While the outer housing of the earpieces are round, the inner cushion does contour to the ear and fits snugly. The audio quality with music playback was nearly the best that I have experienced. The music playback was rich and balanced. The headset has a Bass Effect feature, which I found extraneous because the bass was already fine for me. The headset does have active Noice Canceling which I found to work better the louder the ambient noise around me. For example, I could hear speech noise in a quiet part of my house but outside noise completely disappeared. The headset can be used to answer and talk on a cell phone. When I used the headset to answer my phone, I could hear the caller just fine but the caller did have a little difficulty understanding me as the microphone is on the upper side of the ear housing. I did use the Sony Headphones Connect App, as recommended, with my Android phone. I do want to confirm that this headset works with Android devices because the box only lists compatibility with Apple products. It comes with an audio jack, mini USB charging cord, and a convenient storage pouch. Overall, I have enjoyed this headset very much, and it has replaced my old headset.

I have listened to almost every single headphone bestbuy have on display with different prices. From $30 to $500+ and I decided to buy Sony XB950N1. This headphone is just awesome and offers alot more for the price. The Sound is very powerful and amazing and the extra bass takes the listening experience to whole another level. The sony demonstration setup and songs they have in best buy for these headphones are not good, but if you hook it up with phone or computer they sound perfect. I bought this headphone on sale for $124 and in my opinion it worth every penny. Blutooth, 22 hours houre battery life, noice cancellation, NFC, good quality. I mean what else can I ask for the money I paid. Over all it's a great headphone compared to bose and beats studio and ...

My Favorite Headset Just Got An Upgrade
|

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I've always loved the MDR-XB950BT headset from Sony. As a matter of fact, I still have mine and this new one. I can not say how much more I love the N1 for its noise-cancelling ability. The noise-cancelling is okay at best. When not playing any music, you can still hear outside noise slightly, but when you start playing music, it gets suppressed. It's more like it blocks out the low-end noises. It's not fantastic, but it's good enough to get you by.
The sound quality is phenomenal. The old complaints that the MDR-XB950BT headset has too much bass even with Extra Bass off, is fixed in this one. The app that pairs with this headset can easily change the amount of bass you hear if you think the bass is too much. It also has an equalizer. The sound quality is on par with the XB950BT except that you can lower the bass levels.
The headset does come with a carrying pouch, audio cable, and a micro-USB cable.
If you already have the XB950BT and happy with the bass and don't need the mediocre noise-cancelling, you don't need to upgrade. If you are looking for a new headset, this thing is a beast.

Initial Impression
- Outer box looks pretty standard (for you box lovers out there like me); thumbs down
- Inner “housing” of the headphones has a very nice interesting material. It feels great when you touch it and it gives the product a “quality” aspect. I LIKE THAT!
- Headphones have a nice weight to them. They feel sturdy and the material on the headband feels nice. I didn’t like the feel or quality of the plastic connecting to the ear pieces though. Maybe perhaps if it was the same material as the headband all the way around? Nonetheless, it does feel sturdy though; just wished it wasn’t such light plastic. Ear cushions feel really nice. They’re soft and have “memory foam” like material on the inside. Buttons on the ear pieces are distinguishable and easy to use.
- Pouch is a very nice material, feels very soft and non “scratchy” for your headset. Unfortunately, mine had a hole in it… So be on the lookout when you get yours. If you don’t care so much about the pouch then I guess it doesn’t matter but if you’re someone like me, I’d care!
- Some info from Sony: Sony states: Noise cancelling – Industry leading digital noise cancelling cuts out ambient noise and adapts to your environment so you can hear more of the detail in every track. Now it’s just you and the music. Premium Wireless – Easy to carry, move with and use without obstruction. Bluetooth and NFC wireless connectivity with compatible device. Up to 22 hours of battery life with continuous, wireless music playback. Sound Quality – It wouldn’t be a Sony headphone if it didn’t include premium sound quality. Large, 40 mm driver units deliver broad, dynamic and balanced sound with 20-20,000 Hz frequency response when streaming wirelessly and 3-28,000Hz with the supplied audio cable. Sony Headphone Connect APP – The Sony Headphone Connect App acts as a companion to your headphones. The application allows you to check the battery level, turn noise cancelling on or off, customize the level of bass from -10 to +10m and also provides preset EQ’s such as club, music hall, arena, or outdoors to give you control over how your headphone sound.
Setup/Testing/Conclusion
- Alright ladies and gentlemen, this is what you've been waiting for. So here are my thoughts. Setup was EXTREMELY PAINLESS!!! I did the setup first on my iPhone and it connected perfectly fine. No issues at all. I downloaded the app and the app basically did everything its supposed to do. I was even able to test out the functionality of the app like Surround (VPT) *this is the different EQs you can change it to like arena, club, etc*, extra BASS, and toggling on and off the noise cancellation feature. Everything worked as expected and was honestly kind of fun to be able to customize the way I listen to music. Next setup I did was on an Android phone and it was just as easy! I used the NFC (near field communication) to connect the headset and it worked flawlessly. So if you know how Google Wallet or Apple Pay works, you'll be right at home. You have the same functionality as the iOS app. OH! You also get to check battery life on the app which is neat. So the testing, well lets just say that the sound quality on these are AMAZING! I love them. If you're looking for clear audio, awesome bass, and nice all around music to your ears; I'd definitely give these a try. The only issue* I had with these is that they feel kinda "big". Also, maybe because my ears are huge; they got quite uncomfortable after long periods of listening. I also wear glasses so maybe that's a contribution? I had a couple co workers with different size ears to try them out and they said the exact same thing. So maybe its just us folks in California? I had my spouse try them out and she enjoyed them. The only issue* she had was that she can hear a weird VERY LOW static in the sound. I personally did not experience this nor did my co workers. So maybe my spouse is "hearing things" if you know what I mean. But if you also hear it... Then maybe my co workers and I are the crazy ones. The active noise canceling works great! I texted them in an office environment and at a home environment. So if you're listening to music you can basically expect not to hear anyone around you. If music is not playing or is not as loud, you can faintly hear some other individual(s) around you. But to be honest, I enjoy the noise canceling feature; its quite neat! I love the bass. Sony advertised BASS and I can tell you, there is BASS. I didn't even turn it up max in the app, just at +5 out of +10. My music wasn't even at max. Just for giggles I did +10 for base and max on music and WOW! You can feel the power, lets just say that. If the battery does in fact last 22 hours, that's pretty wonderful. Lets be real, you're gonna end up charging them mid-next day anyways when you're not using them. Since you also get a headphone cable, you can always plug it into a device when you don't necessarily need it to be wireless. In conclusion and all in all, I really enjoyed this headset. If you're on the search for a new headset with folding capabilities, relatively comfortable cushions, and REALLY fantastic sound; give these a try. Sony has always made great quality products and this headset is no exception. Good job SONY!
If you're wondering why I knocked off a star, for me personally (my opinion); its because they were not 100% comfortable for me. But again, that could be because I have big ears and wear glasses.

Definate Buy if on sale!
I lost my Bose QuietComfort and was looking to replace them. Found these on sale for less than a third of the Bose. The reviews were good so I figured I would give them a shot. I'm not disappointed. I don't have the QuietComfort to do a direct comparison, but I would say these are almost as good with the noise cancellation and the same with the sound. Very crisp and clear highs and mids which are most important to me and good bass as well. The Comfort was exceptional a very well padded leatherette pad on the headrest and cushiony leatherette ear cups did not give me any ear fatigue which I typically get with around-the-ear headphones. I was also extremely impressed with how long the battery lasts. I can't tell you how long that is because even when I listened to them for 8 hours plus, I did not use the entire battery. Is there is one con I would have to say it is a lack of noise cancellation on the built-in microphone. I drive a loud diesel car and the difference between using this to take a phone call and the Blue Parrot headset that I typically use for phone calls is apparent with lack of almost any noise cancellation for these. Granted if you are not in a noisy environment you won't have any issues. Great Value and great quality and sound and noise cancellation regardless of the price.

I listened to these in the store on a whim while I was looking for something else. I walked out of of the store shortly thereafter with 2 pairs of headphones. I didn't even ask my significant other if they wanted a pair. I knew they would want these headphones after they listened to them. The sound is amazing. I love how the bass sounds tight without being overwhelming. Even if it is too much, you can set the bass level to your liking using the app. They are incredibly comfortable and the noise canceling is pretty good for the price. Battery life is good. I wish they weren't so big and the included 3.5mm cable feels cheap but everything else is fantastic. These might have my favorite sound profile of all-time and I think I will always consider Sony in any future audio purchases.

I spent months researching headphones. Previously bought the Sennheisers and was disappointed with sound quality. Though they had really good NC. But I want to be immersed in sound. Returned them and tried the 950BT version of this and fell in love. Some people say it's too much bass but you can turn it down or completely off with the app.
Then I saw these on sale for less than what I paid for the BT version... no brainer! Returned them and picked this bad boy up. While it may not be as comfortable as Bose I've found if you fully extend them it's much better. I've used them for hours without issue.
Noise cancellation isn't the best but it's good enough for my budget. Quality of sound is my priority. Even with ear vibrating bass it's still clear crisp to me. Everyone's listing levels are different so you'd have to try them on your own. I just wished this came in that sexy red or blue like the 950BT.

Truth be said, a headphone is mostly something that suits you as an individual. What may be suited for you, might not be something I'd go for. I have been using this product every day for the last 19 days. Every product has its own pros and cons that comes with it. I'd like to list some so far.
Pros:
1. Authentic Rich Bass: Of all headphones I own (around 15), I find this particular model has the best authentic bass. You can literally feel the vibes in your ears if you play any song.
2. Comfortable ear cups: The padding to the ears is super comfortable. They do not hurt your ears and even if they look bulky, they are quite suited for an average size face.
3. Good Battery Performance: Needless to say, they last well enough for almost 10-12 hours on 50% volume and with noise cancelling turned off.
4. Voice Feedback: The moment you turn the bass boost on or the Noise cancelling off, you'd get a feedback confirming your action. The same can also be achieved via an app for Sony in android or iOS.
5. Easy connectivity: I've been toggling the connectivity for this product via my laptop, iPad and cellphone. The toggle seems smooth and I've had no issues connecting to any of the devices at any point of time.
6. Good Noise Cancellation: I've used this near a table top noisy fan, in a flight and I seem to have to experience a good amount of noise cancellation. If you do play songs at well over 80% volume, you need not even have this feature on. The ear cups themselves provide a good amount of noise cancellation on their own.
Now, although this device has many pros, there are a few minor cons. Again, they don't seem much of an issue to me, however, I am listing all of them to see if any one of them is your concern.
Cons:
1. No carrying case: The headphone comes with a good pouch. However, it does not include any carrying solid case. The pro however, is that they fold well enough and hardly utilize much space.
2. Wired Mode: There is a 3.5mm wire included with the product. However, if connected and played via the wire, the bass is somewhat lost. The audio feels like that of any standard headphone with no extraordinary features. It is kind of a let down when you run out of charge and listen via the wires. You lose that thumping beat of the bass.
There could be more, however, I do not feel the cons seem a major letdown. I am very happy with the product and I do need to mention I got this at a very cheaper price thanks to BestBuy, If bass is your thing, look no further. Go ahead and grab one of them. I'm sure you won't regret it. Cheers.

I picked these up on a whim when they went on sale at my local Best Buy store. This is a solid product which fits over my ears and my big pumpkin head very comfortably. The audio range is just what you'd expect and the bass is bumpin'. I ended up buying a hard case to protect them from use and abuse. Overall this is a great headset for the price. I had issues syncing bluetooth to multiple devices, because they kept pairing to a device I wasn't using. If you only use one device you should be fine. I had some difficulty understanding how to turn them off when I was done using them. The first week or so I kept running the battery out because I thought they were off but really they were on. I wish they had a physical toggle switch instead of a tiny push button. I ended up getting my wife a pair too and she loves them especially when she is riding as a passenger with our noisy kids in the car. Noise cancellation for the win!

I love my Sony headphone. I have tried beats and for me they don't fit that well. These Sony headphone however are very comfortable, the noise cancellation is great and the battery life is really good. It is a bit heavy on the bass which I don't mind. Sound quality wise its good but not great since the mids are a little rolled off, i wish the highs were better. I can really wear them for hours without t getting too heavy or uncomfortable (cant say that about beats).

When I went on black Friday I was planning on getting a pair of beats headphones, I talked to the associate working their at the time and I asked him which headphone/brand was the best. He told me to stay away from beats because he said they are an override cheaply made headphones, he recommended Bose or sony and another brand but I can't remember. Bose where still pretty expensive so I looked at the Sony products and I was surprised to find a great sounding headphone with, 18 hours of battery, Bluetooth, extra bass and sound canceling for 100+ dollars. Overall they are a great pair of headphones and I would highly recommend them to anyone that doesn't want to spend over 250+ on higher end headphones.

Excellent Qualities & Features Compared

Before deciding to purchase my Sony MDR-XB950N1 Wireless Noise Canceling Stereo Headset from Best Buy, I read reviews and listened to both different and same brands, models, and price ranges. I know that sound quality standards are subjective, and what individual buyers are looking for in features and spending varies. Like many, I do like a good amount of bass (lows) while listening to music. I found the Skullcandy Crusher Wireless headphones so full of bass that it was vibrating in my hands while testing and comparing headphone sounds at Best Buy. Just too much bass and not enough equal sound along the spectrum from highs to lows. I've also compared Beats headphones, along with other Sony models that were both cheaper and higher in price. In the end, I prefered the Sony MDR-XB950N1 model with its 'Extra Bass' on/off control button, along with the 'Sony Headphones Connect' app which can be downloaded via Google Play or Apple's App Store. This app provides an equalizer-like controls to simulate different sound environments (e.g., an arena, stage, club), and also controls highs and lows. This Sony headphone does a good job of providing good bass, even without selecting 'Extra Bass', and has a good sound through the sound spectrum. I like the wireless, bluetooth performance and use the headphones also to listen to and watch TV. The Noise Canceling feature also works well enough for me. The headphones do look rather bulky or fat on my head. However, what matters most to me is its sound and features as I use them mostly at home. I would recommend this Sony headphone for those with like-minded standards, and with the same budget of less than two hundred dollars.

If you are looking for comfortable over ear headphones that sound great, these are the headphones for you! I tried Skullcandy Crusher and Beats Studio for extended periods of time and these Sonys are the best out of the three. All three sound good but the comfort sets the Sonys above the rest.
I couldn't wear the Crusher or Studio for longer than an hour without my head hurting. The Sonys are much more comfortable and I can wear them for multiple hours with no discomfort.
The battery life and noise cancelling are great as well.

Overall, I love these headphones. They are comfortable and have great bass and overall sound quality. one drawback is that the buttons are very easy to press when you are readjusting the headphones on your ears so sometimes you have accidental button pushes.they are a bit bulkier than some of the other designs out there, but for the battery life you would expect this.

Now that I wear hearing aids I thought listening to my Ipod would be impossible but these over-the-ear headphones, with Bluetooth and phone compatibility are wonderful. They can be used both wireless or wired and with a Bluetooth compatible Ipod I am listening lightening fast. The controls are easy to use and come through in voice to tell you of your command. The sound quality and comfort reminded me of the $399.00 I was ready to spend for headphones. Charging is quick and lasts. I am very satisfied with my purchase.
