I consider myself an audio enthusiast, so when a NEW Sony speaker was available, I jumped at the opportunity. ​​TL;DR for my frequent readers and details below. Good: Weight Design (won’t roll) Multi-positioning Multiple device pairing Battery life App tuning / ClearAudio+ Sound Bad: Slippery / smooth texture USB-A to USB-C cable doesn’t include wall adapter Meh: Another Sony App No Voice Commands Battery Percentage can be inaccurate (in conservation mode) Sony appears to be another manufacturer that is stripping color from their boxes and that’s not all that bad; simple packaging is good. Taking the speaker out, I felt the heft of it. A rubbery appearance with a cool cloth design jumped out at me with the rubbery section being very smooth. It’s a clean-looking, gray, barely badged speaker with a number of low-profile, small buttons. Single handed carrying of this speaker, if you’re not holding onto some of the fabric is slippery. Some kind of low-profile strap to slip your hand under would come in handy as I know I’ll be in a hurry, grab the slippery part & it’ll get dropped. I like to fully charge devices before starting up the configuration and that was quick out of the box, only 45 or so minutes. USB-C is adapted for this speaker, however it’s an A->C cable is included without a wall adapter and since most of my adapters are USB-C now, making me have to dig out an old Samsung charger. Right off the bat, another Sony App is needed: Sony Music Center. It’s a bummer that it isn’t shared with the wireless headphones/earbuds App. Spotify, YouTube Music and iHearRadio can be launched from the App, to stream music from that device. In the Settings section, you can configure a number of preferences including: Bass/Treble/Mids, a “Sony knows best” ClearAudio+ setting & some other effects that I find pretty useless. Good thing to note: Sound tuning survives the App closing on the device it was changed on. I found that during music play, ClearAudio+ did a decent job tuning to what the music was heavy with (bass, etc). TV streaming & sports, also a good job; I didn’t find myself needing to turn the mids / treble up. A new trend of charging up to 80% for battery conservation (like on my new laptops), is also included with the App for this speaker. Side note: if you’re charged to 100% and enable the battery conservation setting, it’ll say the speaker is only at 80%; disabling it shows the true value - for me, 100% after a full charge. I ran this speaker from the day I received it and for another 4 days of random use which only brought it down to 80%. Given that, I’m pretty happy with the battery life. Multiple devices can simultaneously connect to the speaker, which can be good and bad; streaming from a TV and getting a notification from your phone will ‘lower’ the volume to the stream until the notification finishes. With the design looking like a house when on its side, it’s not going to roll off a table and allows for different positioning to keep sound facing the way you want it to be. One thing that keeps this from being the ‘always by the pool’ speaker, is the lack of voice assistant integration; a “Hey Google” or “Alexa” would have made this my only speaker, but I’ll have to keep the other one in play. Speaking of the pool, it’s documented to be waterproof for up to 3 feet for some amount of time. The charging port has a water-proof looking door and secures tightly so I’m not concerned about water getting in there. Since I like this speaker so much and I don’t need to have it floating around in the water (does it float?), I didn’t want to put that to the test. So, after a fair amount of use I recommend this speaker.

The Sony SRS-XE200 Portable Bluetooth speaker is the smallest in the new line of Sony’s Bluetooth category. There are some new technologies that make this XE200 a real winner. It is more than capable holding its own with a small size and technical advances in Bluetooth digital music. General Information It comes in 4 colors to suite your personality: Orange, Blue, Black and Light Grey (I have the black color version). The Sony SRS-XE200 has a carry strap, great surface grip; a quick charging battery can answer phone calls. A 10-minute charge gave me 70-minutes of play time. When the XE200 is fully you charged up you get an astounding 16 hours! I only charged the XE200 every other day. It is nice not to be tied to battery capacity. Receiving phone calls are not a problem, but the issue for me is the mic. You can hear the person on the other side, but for them to hear you, I had to take the XE200 put up against my face! That seemed to be the only way I was able to communicate via the calling feature. Water is not a problem. The SonyXE200 is splash proof with a rating of IP67. This means that you should not dunk it in the water, but a splash of water won’t bother the speaker. The next feature for the XE200 is the fact it is dust proof! When the XE200 is at the beach, don’t worry about sand. The XE200 will take care of your overall performance from any sand getting into the unit. Line-Shape Diffuser The “Line-Shape Diffuser” allows the listener to get the same first row sound, but from the sides of the XE200 Bluetooth speaker. While it’s not a full 180-degree angle of front row sound, it’s pretty close. Turning the speaker slowly around in a circle, you will be able to hear the difference. I thought this was interesting and just a great idea because everyone wants to hear the quality music as best as possible. I found that this tech really spread the music around a broader area, rounding out the front part of the XE200 speaker. It is for real and is ideal for a small group setting for background listening enjoyment. It is just the right size not to take over a group but to blend in the surroundings providing a soundtrack for whatever you are doing; hanging out, games, fire pit gatherings, or even just wanting to hear music together. The XE200 does a beautiful job of this. X-Balanced The “X-Balanced” speaker tech also allows for a more enjoyable sound because of its “Non-Circular Diaphragm.” Most Bluetooth speakers are round. The XE200 speakers are not circular, they are more of an oblong shape. What does this mean? The pressure created works as hard as it can to produce a larger sound from a smaller speaker “without distortion.” I thought the “X-Balanced “(even the speaker has a cloth material surrounding it in the shape of an X) worked really well in aiding with more output and greater sound from a smaller footprint Bluetooth speaker. Dual passive radiators don’t hurt the sound either! They use the pressure inside the speaker to move the passive radiators making the sound scope of the XE200 deeper and wider. Sony App (pt I) You will want to download the accompanying “Sony Music App.” Why? It’s a cinch to do it and it provides a customizable EQ for the high/mid/low levels. I loved this feature. With different music I adjusted the EQ for maximum quality sound depending on the genre. In the App, this enabled the option to choose the preset “Clear Audio +”. It is simply a preprogrammed EQ from the App. The App also allows for connecting to other Sony speakers (certain speakers listed in the App) for true stereo sound. I listened to songs from Pop, Rock, Metal, Alt, Jazz, Blues, Rockabilly and Classical music genres through the XE200. I found that the XE200 performed its best with music associated with mid to high bandwidth. Jazz, Classical, some pop & rock and blues sounded really well rounded in the mid to high music. Low pitched volume is just not in the cards for the XE200 because of its size. It is also important to note, that you can crank up the volume with “no distortion”! The XE200 definitely got louder not necessarily more dynamic, but hey, it’s a smaller size Bluetooth speaker. It did still sound great! Sony App (pt II) Along with the Sony Music App’s customizable EQ, there is a Spotify choice for your music or a selection from a source on your phone, computer or laptop that has MP3 files on it. You can also choose from several types of “Connection types.” There were several to choose from, but I chose the “sound quality” option which made a difference in the way the XE200 showcased music. Another unique and very helpful guide to the XE200 Bluetooth speaker was the “voice.’ It spoke when I paired the XE200, battery life or turning it on/off. I also choose the “Stand by” feature that turns off the XE200 when there is no activity for 15 minutes. Just the “right” size It is on the cusp of being just a little bit bigger and weighing a little than some micro speakers, but I still enjoyed the XE200 on my morning walks. I found the size, weight, grip material, carrying strap and overall sound to work very well. It is a tough speaker (shock proof actually), because when I dropped it - nothing broke or was damaged in any way! Perfect! I had no issues (weighs only a 1 lb) and was pleased to have some music with me when I walked 2-3 miles every day (I always kept the volume low - as not to disturb other people). I also liked to listen to the XE200 at night. I had the volume turned down to a low setting, kept the speaker close and bothered no one. I do that about every night! The size of the XE200 is great because it leaves a small footprint but offers a robust sound. Sometimes I go in my bedroom and the speaker is on, but I cannot tell where the sound is coming from. What a great use of tech to build such a ‘wide sound stage”. Take your music with you or listen to it at home. Fine tune it with the App wherever you go. The Sony SRS-XE200 portable Bluetooth speaker checks all the right boxes for quality, features, durability and most importantly sound.

TLDR; IP67 dustproof and waterproof, but if it falls in the pool, get it out! 25 hours life on a single charge using USB-C 5V 3A charger (included) and can charge your own devices with equipped USB-A port. EQ settings can only be adjusted in the Music Center app. Up to two simultaneous Bluetooth connections supported. Can be grouped with other speakers. Conference calls are aided by Echo Canceling technology, aiding in simultaneous talking, promoting more natural conversations. Customizable LED rings on each woofer sync to the beat of the music. Can get very loud without much distortion, yet remains very crisp and clear, which impressed me very much. Bass is tight and punchy, but don’t expect rumbling at the lower frequencies. Setting up the XG300 is very simple on both Android and iOS, and it’s much like any other Bluetooth device pairing done if you’re familiar with the process. It’s even easier on Android as the OS will immediately present you with a connection window, much like the setup found on Apple for its wireless earbuds. Charge time from empty to full is about 5 hours, and you can choose to have the unit charge to “nearly” full to extend the longevity of the battery (done in the Music Center App). When the unit is on, a simple press on the Bluetooth button will begin the pairing process, and you can do this twice. The XG300 supports Bluetooth version 5.2. Controls are very straightforward, with the exception of the missing next/previous track buttons as these two buttons are disguised under the play/pause/answer button. A double press of this button moves on to the next track, and a triple press will move you back to the beginning/previous track, which should be familiar behavior for you. Of course, a single press of this button will play/pause/answer. So, what’s left is the volume up, volume down, Mega Bass, Bluetooth pairing and power buttons. They are tactile, black rubber buttons with white paint, but I fear that overtime the white paint will wear off. Ease of portability is a big selling point of the XG30 with its built-in carrying handle, which I found very welcoming. It’s just one less thing to worry about when transporting this 6 pound hunk of hardware. On the flip side, it would have been nice to be able to attach a shoulder strap that some other brands offer as it frees up one hand when you’re on the move. The built-in handle does keep the speaker looking sleek, but only time will tell how long the rubber handle holds up. Seems sturdy, though. As I mentioned above, two simultaneous Bluetooth connections can be made to the XG300, but if you’ve got an old music device that you’d like to use, there is an available 3.5mm audio port in the back. So bring out your Walkmans and Discmans and rock out! Also worth noting is the two LED rings on either side of the XG300. Honestly, I’ve always found this kind of gimmicky, especially if you’re using this during the daytime. You do have the ability to not only change its flashing style, but also turn them off completely. It’s at night where they do shine, and I do like how they’re not in-your-face like some other brands. They’re subtle, but still very cool to watch move with the rhythm of the beat. Then there is sound quality, which is always a subjective topic with all things sound related. I’ve been cursed with hearing loss from the 90’s trend of two 12” subwoofers that shook the earth and tweeters that emit sounds that even your dog can’t hear. Then with today's technology, I’ve been blessed with the most state-of-the-art hearing aids that give me the ability to hear what is equivalent, if not better, than 20/20 vision. That being said, the XG300 sounds great overall with its strengths across a majority of the frequency band, with the only exception at the lower end. By design, the XG300 is a sealed system, which produces the most clean, punchiest bass to complement the rest of the mid/upper frequencies, but if you’re a basshead, it’s not coming from this, even with Mega Bass on. Casting that aside, the XG300 does not disappoint, and its rich sound can be heard for several meters. Think beach party, pool party, at the park or even in a bike basket taking a cruise. What’s so great is that at even much louder volumes, music is not distorted. I always go to Dr. Dre’s 2001 Instrumental to get a gauge of how well all frequencies play nice with each other, and the XG300 finds ways to mitigate that distortion so you can still hear the rest of the track. As a matter of fact, Sony promotes their ClearAudio+ setting in the Music Center App, which is supposed to be Sony’s preferred EQ, and it really emphasizes those mids/highs. If it’s not for you, you can always change it up in the Custom EQ. I like the ClearAudio+ setting and intend not to change it anytime soon. Lastly, there is the price. At MSRP, there are a lot of contenders fighting for your party time. If low, loud bass is what you’re looking for, you may not be happy with this speaker and there are other offerings that can provide this. If you do care for Sony's high quality sound, a 25 hour battery life and a body that will withstand the elements, the XG300 is a perfect choice. This Bluetooth speaker sounds great! It is just the right size and yet is very portable. It was priced way lower than other speakers of the same size and sound quality. I'm using it in combination with a Bluetooth turntable and it was super easy to connect.
