Thank you for purchasing our SRS-XP500. We're glad you like the incredible audio quality of this speaker. Yes, you are correct about that. The maximum sound volume for playing music depends on whether the speaker is running on power from the connected AC outlet or from the rechargeable built-in battery. This, however, does not indicate a malfunction. To play music louder, connect the speaker to an AC outlet.
