Hi William, We are sorry to hear that the SRSXP700 did not meet all of your expectations and had to return the unit. The maximum sound volume for playing music depends on whether the speaker is running on power from the connected AC outlet or from the rechargeable built-in battery. This, however, does not indicate a malfunction. To play music louder, connect the speaker to an AC outlet. Turn up the volume of the speaker and the connected device and check that the connected device is playing. We hope that you consider Sony again in your future purchases.
