Hi HDhillon, Thank you for the feedback on your experience with your SRSXP500. While we're glad you like the great sound quality of this speaker, we regret to hear that the volume output doesn't get louder when you're turning up the volume above 50%, and it had to be returned. Please note: The maximum power output will be lower when the built-in battery is running low. And the maximum sound volume for playing music depends on whether the speaker is running on power from the connected AC outlet or from the rechargeable built-in battery. This, however, does not indicate a malfunction.
To play music louder, connect the speaker to an AC outlet. If the sound becomes low while in use, follow the procedure below.
Turn off the speaker.
Charge the built-in battery sufficiently.

This, however, does not indicate a malfunction. By downloading the Sony Music Center app, you will find all sorts of tools to fine-tune the speaker using the built-in EQ and maximize the volume to ensure optimal listening experience.
