The Sony XV900 far exceeded my expectations!

The Sony XV900 BLUETOOTH Party Speaker from Best Buy seemed like a good choice so I got it. The speaker far exceeded my expectations! Yes, the speaker has a great sound and very cool flashing lights for a great party atmosphere. (The lights can be turned off when you don't want them.) But I was amazed at the options and how well they work. Setup was extremely easy and straightforward. To get the most mileage out of the speaker you need to download the Sony Music Center app for your phone and connect it to the speaker via Bluetooth. Once the app is connected it will immediately show you a menu of sound/music services for your phone. Mine included Amazon Music, Pandora, SoundCloud, Spotify, TuneIn Radio, and YouTube Music. You can choose any of these services to stream to the speaker, or, alternatively, choose any app on your phone and stream the sound from it to the speaker. But the Sony XV900 BLUETOOTH Party Speaker can do so much more than stream music from your phone. The back panel has 1/4" inputs for a microphone and guitar with volume controls next to the inputs. I tried them both. (Take care to plug a guitar into the jack marked for guitar.) My voice with a Shure microphone sounded rich and deep, and my electric acoustic guitar sounded great. Perfect for sing-alongs or karaoke. The back panel also contains a 1/8" input if your have a device you want to connect with this size cable. There is also an optical input if you want to boost sound from your TV or other device with optical out. An optical cable is provided. The back panel has a USB input that can be used for charging your phone or playing songs from a USB drive. I tried a USB drive containing songs in several different formats. The Sony Music Center app is crucial here, as you use it to choose songs from the USB drive. The XV900 was able to read songs in mp3, wma, and wav formats but did not recognize music encoded as mp2 (yes, there is such a thing), flv, mp4, or flac. So make sure your files are in a readable format. A possible downside is that the unit is not waterproof, so I would not set this up near a swimming pool or allow your guests to place their beverages on it. It is also pretty heavy (60 pounds), but it does have two wheels to help move it around. I really saw no significant problems with this speaker. Finally, the motto for Sony's X-series speakers is Live Life Loud, and the XV900 certainly lives up to that motto. I am an old-time rock 'n' roll musician who loves loud music. I could turn up the volume on the XV900 only about 3/4 of the way before it felt too loud. It will be plenty powerful for you parties. I give it my highest recommendation.

|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Long story short: I'm blown away. I'm an audio engineer and am particularly critical of speakers. If you're in the market for a speaker of this size/price/quality, you won't be disappointed with this. It's unapologetically large and heavy but it makes up for that in spades in audio quality, volume, and battery. It's the first Bluetooth speaker I've heard that doesn't sound like a Bluetooth speaker, if that makes sense. Long story long: The first thing you notice about this unit is the size and weight. It's in the neighborhood of 3 feet tall and 60 lbs (according to the box). Build quality is solid, top handles are solid and make moving the speaker easy. The audio quality is what really impressed me. Most Bluetooth speakers sound like Bluetooth speakers and are either overly tinny or obnoxiously bass-heavy. Sony really did a good job here. A little EQ in the app was all it needed to sound great. Having the proper hardware goes a long way. This unit has dedicated drivers for different frequency ranges and since it's so big, the woofer can be huge so you get real low-end instead of having to artificially boost it with software. I'm a firm believer that hardware should come first with software just filling the gaps. That seems like what Sony is doing with this unit and it shows. There's also dual mid-range drivers and dual tweeters. I don't know if this unit is summing all audio to mono or if it only has the low end in mono and uses the dual mid and high range speakers for stereo, but I haven't noticed any mono playback issues so I'd assume it's the latter - which is great. As far as loudness is concerned, 30% volume was loud enough for me in a medium sized room. This would be more than loud enough for an indoor party or medium to large outdoor gathering. There are also a few nifty features. Lights, a mic/guitar input, and a USB port for charging. Those are great but are more of a value add vs a selling feature. The *only* issue I've come across is with the app. I'd really like if the 3 band EQ became a 7 or 10 band EQ. The current EQ works but having more options would be nice. In general, if you're in the market for a speaker like this and are willing to spend this kind of money on it, this unit deserves your consideration.

I decided to take it back and I ended up getting the JBL800 one. The JBL is the best between the two.

Gone are the days of attempting to jam out using your little portable Bluetooth speaker that doesn’t have any bass, you can’t hear across the room or backyard, and just simply doesn’t have that wow factor. If you’ve been struggling to find the music companion to make your parties, events, or gatherings into the concert like venue you’ve been longing for, you don’t have to search any longer. This speaker is a beast! It’s purely massive! Weighing in at almost 60 lbs, you may want to adhere to the two person carry warning. Sitting at 34” tall and about 18” square, this speaker makes a statement just sitting there. I love how you see the multitude of speakers and subwoofer through the grill of the speaker. The build quality is extremely solid, the speaker feels very durable. While it does have some built in wheels, they’re not overly useful, they only roll over smooth surfaces well. You’ll find yourself using the built-in carry handles much more if you do end up repositioning it. Getting paired to the speaker was extremely easy, simply place the speaker into pairing mode, join your mobile device and you’re off to the races. The sound presence and quality is astonishing. The highs are crisp, there’s good presence and warmth, and the subwoofer does a great job at providing that low end bass, and if you’re needing more, the Mega Bass function to add even more punch. While the speaker is heavily marketed towards “party” type music, any genre I played on the speaker was very well balanced and represented. If you want even more control and flexibility, you can download the Sony Music Center application for more adjustments and features. Topping all that off is a whopping 25 hours of battery life, the built-in light show capability, and ability to pair numerous Sony speakers together in party mode. So all in all, if you’re looking for a feature packed portable speaker that can elevate your jam sessions, you need to look further into this speaker. While you won’t be lugging it around on vacation in your carry-on, you’ll have the ability to create a party whenever you need.

|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Requested this unit to review, thinking it would be a great sounding yet unobtrusive speaker to put on a side table for ambient sound during get-to-gathers. Guess I didn't read the description. This speaker is BIG. 35" tall, 16" wide and 17" deep, not gonna hide it. Perfect for a large room, overkill for an apartment, the XV900 puts out plenty of sound to fill a large event hall. Boasting 9 discrete drivers, a 12" woofer, two 4.5" mid-range drivers and two 2" tweeters on the front panel, one 2" tweeter on each side panel and two rear-facing tweeters on the top, this unit produces an abundance of clean, undistorted, enveloping sound. One thing to note, the MEGA BASS feature really does increase the bass but in doing so, muddies the upper frequencies. I tried it with several music styles but never thought it was a benefit so I've kept it off in most circumstances unless I want to shake the floor and windows. Sony has provided for multiple input sources, Bluetooth being the main one. Searching for a device starts as soon as the unit is powered up and connection is quick and easy. A 3.5mm input, and a USB A (flash drive) input are also available, allowing multiple means for getting the music started. For more fun, Karaoke. A 1/4" jack input with level control is provided on the rear of the unit. Plug in a mic and sing along with the music. A bonus, not found on most other speaker units, another 1/4" jack input for a guitar. Turn the speaker into a guitar amplifier. Clean so you will need to add pedals to your input to get any distortion or affects. None the less, a nice feature. Top panel controls are straight forward, intuitive and easy to use and access. Right out of the box, the unit can be up and running in less than 5 minutes. A fun, great sounding, feature-full speaker perfect for entertaining. Highly recommend.
