Universal delivers with a reference UHD transfer!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Congratulations to Universal on yesterday’s release of Spartacus (1960) in 4K UHD. Coming so soon after last week’s viewing of Sony’s Lawrence of Arabia, I had high hopes and it didn’t disappoint. Kirk Douglas and Stanley Kubrick would be proud. And a special kudos to Robert A. Harris who meticulously restored the film back in the early 90s (where 12 minutes of scenes were edited out to satisfy censors were restored) when he was able to consult with both Kubrick and Douglas. Nothing more needs to be said about the actual film which hasn’t been said. The cast alone: Douglas, Olivier, Laughton, Ustinov, Tony Curtis, Jean Simmons with support from John Gavin, Woody Strode and Herbert Lom warrants praise. Douglas hired Kubrick (after working with him on Paths of Glory in 1957) after firing the film’s first director, Anthony Mann. Kubrick was only 30 at the time and had been thrust into a situation where he had to direct and tolerate the egos of some of cinema’s greatest English actors - particular Olivier and Laughton who both purportedly loathed each other. And Laughton........Let’s just day screenwriter Dalton Trumbo’s (who was finally publicly given screen credit for the first time since being blacklisted by HUAC) dialogue served him well!

Crucified for freedom on the Appian way in 4k
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This classic looked and sounded amazing in Dolby vision and DTSX. The 2015 restoration was run through a 6k processor. Converted down to a "true" 4k reproduction. One of the greatest 4k disc I've ever seen. Most people have not seen this movie. Highly recommended!

Spartacus
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Rating is for the shipping quality and not the film. The film itself is hands down one of the best 4k films out there! The Steelbook showed up damaged unfortunately.

Excellent Steelbook for Collectors
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The front is matte with a spot gloss along the entire arm, sword, chain and title. The back is all matte. This is one of the higher quality Steelbooks in my collection (for reference that number is somewhere between 60-70). Important Note: The digital redemption code that was included seems to not work with Vudu (at least directly). Both myself and a handful of other collectors I know were unable to redeem the code into Vudu, however it was able to work through Movies Anywhere. Since the two are connected under the same umbrella, the digital copy will appear in both. Save yourself the trouble of contacting Vudu customer support.

Gorgeous 4K pictures!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review."Spartacus" is a long movie - about three hours. However, it is a good movie and it has an intermission to provide you a break. I watched this movie for the first time and was surprised to find I enjoyed the movie considering the time it was produced. It definitely aged very well. The best thing about this movie in 4K is the 4K pictures. The pictures is just gorgeous! Universal did a great time in giving this the 4K treatment. The difference is like day and night! Brilliant colors. Though you could tell that it was definitely a product of its time (production values and hairstyles for instance), the 4K treatment made it looks like it wasn't made too long ago! It's the best 4K transfer I've ever seen and "Spartacus" definitely will be my reference point when judging the 4K treatment of a film. Great movie and glorious 4K treatment makes this film worth having in your collection!

Excellent restoration of classic Kubrick film
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For the 60th Anniversary Edition of Spartacus, the original large format negatives from the 1960s were rescanned in 6k and restored and color corrected in 4k. It’s exciting to see this new restoration because Spartacus was shot on Super Technirama 70 film, allowing twice the width of traditional 35mm movies. On 4k Blu-ray, Spartacus is presented in 2160p resolution at 2.20:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 for expanded color range. There is a noticeable improvement in detail in the shadow areas, partly because of the new scans but also because HDR can expand the color depth to allow more detail to be visible in dark and light areas. And, in 4k the video is as sharp as it has ever been. Without a doubt, this film is a must-own on 4k Blu-ray and even better if your audio system supports DTS:X and/or 7.1 channels.

SPARTACUS in 4K
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This 4K Spartacus looks and sounds (possibly) better now than it did in the theaters in 1960. But the real question is, is it worth the upgrade from the blu-ray Restored Edition of 2015? If you have a 4K television and UltraHD blu-ray player then yes, it does seem to look better. The thing is, the 2015 disc looked so good that improving it would be hard to do. I do see a difference but it's not night and day because (again) the 2015 disc LOOKED THAT GOOD. Ultimately if your happy with the 2015 disc then spend your money elsewhere. But if you have any other reason to consider an upgrade then you won't be disappointed with this 4K of Spartacus. And you can now pass on your 2015 disc to someone else because this 2-disc set contains the 2015 blu-ray too.

Kubrick. Steelbook. 4K. Enough said.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Universal and Best Buy have joined forces again for brand new exclusive SteelBook for the long awaited UHD release of Director Stanley Kubrick's 1960 Epic 'Spartacus. If you haven seen the movie, well, see it before you watch Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000)...too late for the warning! (?) The SteelBook itself has a smooth finish (Not glossy), includes 2 discs (a 4K disc and the standard HD BluRay) and a 4K redeemable digital copy of the film. The special features included are as followed: *I Am Spartacus: A Conversation with Kirk Douglas *Restoring Spartacus *Archival Interviews *Deleted Scenes *Behind the Scenes Footage *Vintage Newsreels *Theatrical Trailer This is highly recommended for all Stanley Kubrick fans and SteelBook collectors.

Extraordinary quality 4K
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Spartacus remastered and restored version, in a steel book exclusive to Best Buy no less for those into collecting such things, is a spectacular example of the potential that 4K video offers to the home viewing experience. While it still cannot rival seeing it in a large screen theater, as I was fortunate enough to do a few years back at the Seattle Cinerama, it is nonetheless incredibly impressive on my Sony Z9D 65 inch set. Add the robust surround sound, and sit back and enjoy this classic looking probably as good or better than it did in 1960.

Classic film gets deserved home video treatment!
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This has been one of my most anticipated titles in 4K since the format was launched, and Universal certainly exceeded my expectations! While the semi-recent remastered Blu-Ray was definitely a step up from the much maligned initial release, there was still room for improvement, and we finally have it! The image is crisp and vibrant, with a very apparent increase in resolution and image quality, thanks to the Super Technirama 70mm source. Audio excels as well, sounding rich and robust on a home theatre system. Highly recommended!!

Classically epic
||Posted . Owned for 10 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's easy to see why Spartacus is so influential and considered "genre-defining" - it's as grandiose and melodramatic as one could expect an event film of yesteryear can be. It's also the least Kubrickian of Kubrick's works I've so far enjoyed; one can spot his visual signature in certain set designs and shot compositions, otherwise it plays far more like the work of Cecil B. DeMille than the director of Dr. Strangelove or 2001. The restoration, without hyperbole, is PRISTINE.

Kirk Douglas IS Spartacus
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. And this is the way to see this classic made back in an age when epic films were made for real and not on a studio computer. Kirk Douglas is in the role that cemented him as a Hollywood star plays in the title role As a slave turned gladiator, turned freedom fighter. Kubrick film comes To life even more in this remastered edition which is best version yet. Features include a new interview with Douglas and a featurette on the Remastering process and original trailer.

Spartacus
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is one of the best of the "biblical epics" from the era of the late 1950's through the mid 1960's. There's a lot of history involved with this film: from it's producer and lead actor Kirk Douglas passing away in 2020 to the fact that he clashed creatively with director Stanley Kubrick. It was a thrill to see that Spartacus got the "4k" treatment in 2020. The picture looked beautiful and the sound (dialogue, music and effects) are first rate!

Amazing restoration effort!!
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Kudos to the restoration team at Universal for getting this right! They seem to be knocking their catalogue releases out of the park lately. It looks and sounds fabulous - probably better than ever before, even on it's original release date (not that I would know...born in 1970.) You are getting the full version of the movie too, not the edited and watered down version(s) available for decades. Super Technirama was meant for 4K UHD!

Epics deserve 4K
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the version of this movie to own. The audio and video pop! The color and detail of the costumes and jewelry really stand out. I'm becoming a really big fan of 4K and a big production like this epic showcase what 4K is all about on a large screen-I have a 65" LG OLED that has a gorgeous picture (sound is so-so but I run it thru the pre-amp via a fibre-optic cable anyway).

Kirk Douglas Classic in 4K
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Spartacus is a gladiator-like 3 hour epic directed by Stanley Kubrick that Kirk Douglas was famously known for. This new 4K restoration looks refreshing. It's as if I am watching an entire new movie for the first time. The clarity is amazing and I love the steelbook design that was made for the 4K. It's a long, but rewarding movie that's worth every 4K frame. I highly recommend it.
