However, once we put it on, we noticed the laptop never fully closes, there was a small crack. So we returned it and bought a padded sleeve instead.

Can still see the Apple logo and color of the laptop. Low profile. Certainly won’t protect against a drop or bump, but wards off the errant scratches.

I've never dropped it or thrown it into a bag. I'm not a kid and don't like wasting my money. But this case looks like the laptop was dropped on the floor multiple times. It started within two months.
