A bit on the dull side
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this on "Deal of the Day". I've been trying this toy out for my granddaughter and thought she would enjoy it. But Spidy isn't in the groove quite yet. I do like the alarm feature and the "On Guard" program. But the rest isn't where I would hope an "AI" product should be.

Didnt work for us.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We bought this thinking it would be fun to interact with since we already had a BB-8 at home. We started setting it up and it never was able to connect to our wifi. We called numerous times to the manufacturer and our cable company and no one could configure it so it could work. The manufacturer send us a new one hoping it would work and we had the same issue.

Spidey Senses Tingling
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m a big Spider-Man fan ever since I was a kid, so I was excited to get this. It comes in very nice packaging. Upon opening up the box you have spidey himself, a charging base and a usb cable. It does not include an actual wall plug but these days we all have those laying around the house or you can just plug it into the USB port of your computer. So no big deal. Once he’s all changed up you download the app then you have to download the firmware and updates to get spidey up and running, a little annoying but bearable. After setting him up you are ready to start playing with him. Spider-Mans is made up of a rubbery silicon material that has nice texture and is soft. He has LCD eyes that are very animated and cartoon like. He gives off quite a few expressions with those cool eyes. You can play games with him with voice activation or even use the app to do several activities like go on missions and fight bad guys. There even a guard mode where he’ll guard your room for you and an alarm mode which is pretty cool. He has plenty of dialogue and is very quirky which will allow you hours of enjoyment. This toy is cool for spidey fans and collectors like me who enjoyed the comics and cartoons since they were a kid. I believe small children would also be entertained with is as well.

Collectible for the diehard Spider-Man fan
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had my hands on this toy for a few days and did a lot of interacting with it. This is a great item for any die-hard fan of Spider-Man whether they are a child or adult. I feel the price is pretty steep for an item like this but it does provide hours of fun. It can also be used as an alarm, which would be great for a kid to get them out of bed in the morning. There are interactive games and storylines that I could see a 6 or 7-year-old having a lot of imaginative scenarios play out. Although not required, it is best if you have a smartphone or tablet to download the app for customization and a greater selection of games/options. The first thing I noticed after unboxing was that it did not include a wall charger plug. Maybe the makers assume you already have a USB wall charger unit or a computer/laptop, but not everyone does. A few other minor gripes include not being able to use the toy as a Bluetooth speaker. The technology is there and it would be a good ‘extra’ feature especially since the collectible has a decent speaker and a premium cost. When connected to Wi-Fi, you get new updates so hopefully that feature is added in the future. Also, it would be cool if the eyes showed more than just white. The eyes move and show different ‘attitudes’ depending on what Spider-Man is saying but it would be nice to see other things happening like colorful explosions or story-related clips. Overall, if you are a big Spider-Man or superhero fan, I recommend adding this item to your collection.

Great for younger kids. And some adults
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ostensibly this is for my 8-year-old son, but who am I kidding? I was pretty curious about it too! Setup was reasonably easy, although the first update was a little confusing. After that the little guy picked his hero name in the app by selecting a word from column A and column B and his super power in a similar way. After that Spidey started addressing him by his hero name. Nice touch! What he can do is somewhat limited, but it is fun to interact with him. He's always ready with a bad joke or a goofy story. One of my favorites is when he plays hide and seek. He told my kid to hide and he'd find him. Obviously Spider-Man isn't going anywhere, so he waited until my son went in to check to see if he had moved and that's when Spidey "caught" him. Sphero promises updates as time goes on. They've been good about supporting their other toys, so I'm hopeful they will add functionality soon. One thing he does do is react to episodes of the new Spider-Man animated series if you watch with him. The best part is his animated eyes. They're white LCD screens with black animated "eyelids" like the mask in Spider-man Homecoming. Such a simple idea, but it makes him seem more expressive and "real."

Glorified kids toy
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As much as I wanted to love this Sphero Spider-man toy, I just couldn’t. Let’s call it what it is and thats just an overpriced kids toy. This app enabled Spidey toy is limited in what it does. You choose a super hero name (from a list of preset names), and a super power(also from preset names), and set off with spidey to fight crime or hang out and chat. You have 3 choices on the app screen. You can also set spidey as an alarm clock or as a defense unit where he monitors any activity and reports back to you. His eye animation are pretty cool, but thats about it. He does not move at all. Arms, legs, zip. Not even his head, its just the eyes. I say this is a glorified toy and it is. For $200 the price just doesn’t justify what you actually get from this.

Fun little tech amusement.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First, let me get this out of the way... this is adorable! Ok... this is a fun little distraction. With the app, you can do short adventures, and as a stand-alone Spidey can tell jokes, do basic interactions, comment on his fellow heroes, and his spidersense guards the room. In my office, he’s mostly there just looking cute, but was really catching the attention of co-workers. For kids, there is limited playability (only the arms move a little) but for younger kids this will really entertain them. It reminds me a lot of the 80’s toy, Teddy Ruxpin. Hopefully a future Venom Sphero is released, as he’s the main baddie on the box and is part of the adventures. Overall, he’s a fun little gimmick that is sure to entertain 6-10 yr olds... he definitely entertains this 30-something. Did I mention he’s adorable?

Very, very cool. A great holiday gift.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So, I had to get this, being a Spider-man fan for many years and, although this is geared toward a younger crowd, it is a real blast. The packaging was nice and secure and the setup was literally 3 steps. The battery charge is pretty quick, and the stand is very stable. The toy itself is well made and my wife thinks it looks really cute with the over-sized, funko pop looking head. The jokes and puns are so corny they are funny because of it. The stories are short but are pulled from actual comic story lines - at least the ones I have heard so far. This is kind of cool, being a long-time fan. The interactions of the Team-up mode are, as expected, geared to the young. My nephews played with the toy for a couple hours and thought the jokes were great - they are into joke books and thought that was the best part. In summary, it is a well built easy to use toy that would make a good present for a variety of ages but will see the most enjoyable use by elementary/early middle school age kids. I am already on the hook to get one of these for the aforementioned nephews for the holidays this year - It'll be well worth the price for them. I'm keeping mine all to myself.

Mehhhhh!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm still trying to figure out what this is supposed to be. Outward appearances have the device being a whimsical representation of the much beloved superhero Spiderman. The only "moving" part on the figure are the LCD eyes that change shape to mimic expressions. This Spiderman seems to be geared to the pre-teen. I can't see anyone older giving this much time. You must download the companion app to be able to actually use Spidey. The app will allow you to select interactive modes, set volume. Personalization is limited, you can select from two lists to create your character name which Spidey will address you as. You can also select two parts to create his super power. It does have a few amusing games that you can activate via the app but I found they get old quickly. Spidey tells corny jokes and stories and will enlist your help to fight villians. What it isn't... an interactive assistant in the vein of Google Home or Amazon Echo. It can't play music, it can't tell you the weather, it can't do Google searches or provide the seemingly unlimited information that a home assistant can. What it is... a limited interactive toy. The limitation comes from not being connected to the internet and only can interact with what is programmed in memory. There is also limited customization using the app. I'm unsure if app updates will add features or stories or jokes. It does have a couple of somewhat useful features. The first being a motion detector of sorts. You can put Spidey "On Guard" and if anything moves in the area Spidey will alert you. The second feature is being able to use Spidey as an alarm clock but again you must use the app. The most annoying thing for me is that you have to push the spider on Spidey's chest for him to listen to commands or responses. So no just setting him on the desk or shelf. He has to be in hand. In closing I'm a bit confused of the purpose of this device. The price of just under $150 puts me at a quandry of its actual usefulness. Is it cute, yeah. Does it do some cool stuff, yeah but only with the app. Is it worth $150, mehhhhh! I think your money would be better spent on an interactive home assistant however if you are a die-hard Spidey fan then maybe so, that's what attracted me to this guy.

Cute interactive companion for pre-teens & younger
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sphero - Spider-Man is a talkative, story telling, interactive companion for your child. Charge him up, and your child can carry him around with him placing him wherever he is. If he needs a charge, plug Spider-Man into his base (which is plugged into a USB port from your computer or wall USB charger, if you have one). To properly use Spider-Man, there are manual touches you can use to interact with him in a limited way, but his full potential is found when you download the Spider-Man app for your iPhone or Android phone and connect Spider-Man to your Wi-Fi network through the app. On the phone your child chooses his own super hero name and super power in the app, then your child can chose to Team Up with Spider-Man or Hang Out with him or Fight Villains by one of those selections in the app. In each of the three choices, there are a number of options for activity. Choose one and Spider-Man will narrate what's going on in the adventure asking for your child's input at certain points to carry the narrative one way or the other. There are many options as to what adventures your child can have. Your child can just talk to Spider-Man direct and he will learn from these conversations by your child's responses. Spider-Man can be set to Guard Mode so that he will tell your child what happened while your child was gone - his Spidey-sense (motion detector) will keep tabs on things while your child is gone. Your child can set an alarm as well. Through your Wi-Fi Spidey can get updates to his operation system and download new content (new missions and adventures) when available. To enjoy the full benefits of Spider-Man, a smart phone will be needed along with a Wi-Fi connection. If an adult will set things up with the app and learn some about how Spider-Man works while helping the child learn how to do things, Spidey should be a fun companion for children around 6 or 7. Those a little older can probably handle the app themselves to get Spidey set up for use and engage with him through the app and in conversation with Spider-Man. Spider-Man is simple to set up once you work with him a little and use the phone app. Spidey should provide hours of interaction with pre-teens that like to use their imaginations.

Cool little thing, doesn't do much
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So I unboxed Spiderman and it's a really nice box. Spiderman was right there with a cover that has 3 steps on it for a quick start. After taking it out of the box, you have to fight with the liner to get it out. There's no on spot to get a grip. Then the base has to be dumped out as again there is no way to get a hold of it. Nicely in a closed small box, you find the usb cord sans any power adapter. I used my Nook adapter to charge the unit which is one of the steps. The 3rd step is to download the software and it posts a link....that doesn't work. Well it does if you want to download the company's software for Star Wars toys. Since I'm in the Google Play Store now, I just search Sphero Spider and it comes up first on the list. I download it and start answering questions, wifi and password, email address, etc. I should be done right....nope. This thing needs to update the firmware, and two other lines via my smartphone. The first lines starts at 26% and the other two are at 0%. It takes a good 15-20 minutes to update. Then Spider-man finally says something. You have to learn a few commands and the double press took about 5 tries to get it to work. There's really not much he does, but his vocabulary has enough words that I didn't hear any repetition..yet. The pros are the thing is cute and definitely a conversation piece. It's well constructed and like I said, the box is really nice. It will look good in my office next to other collectibles. I would only recommend it to individuals that collect Spider-man or Marvel items. I doubt it will be a huge seller and those are the collectibles worth collecting.

Entertaining toy for 7 - 9 year olds!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When you hear the word "Sphero" you don't think stationary toy. This toy doesn't move other than eye movements, and is basically a kids version of a well known device...device...device...device. :) You can ask it questions...shake it and it will interact with you...simulate fights...and functions as an alarm clock and room guard! I think there's a lot of potential for this as features are added, but for now the kids lose interest in it quickly.

Teddy Ruxpin 2.0
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I was little I had a Teddy Ruxpin.. It was pretty advance for its time.. The Spider Man Sphero reminds me of my childhood but updated. I can see my kids having something to look fond of 20 years from now. This interaction between Spider-man and “my kids” is pretty funny. Its like having an imagery friend but really talks to you. This is a great alternative for kids to play with instead of a table or cell phone in from of their faces. I worry that support and content will be limited 6 month to a year from now, but only time will tell.

Amazing!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Sphero Spider-Man is truly amazing!! My 8 year old has not put it down since it was delivered. The compatible app is easy to use and downloads quick. My son was able to choose his own superhero name, which he can change as often as he wants, and each one comes with its own "superpower". Spiderman is super interactive - he tells my son jokes, what day and time it is, stories, and even answers random questions such as his favorite color. One of the coolest features is Guard Mode - you can set Spiderman to guard a room when you leave it and he will activate anytime someone crosses his path. My son set it when he was in the shower and Spiderman told him how many intruders went in and exactly what time they entered. Another fantastic feature is the construction - Spiderman is very durable, made out of something that almost feels like a basketball. My son has dropped it a few times and it hasn't sustained any damage. The LED eyes are also really cool, they blink on a regular basis and change with Spiderman's moods and actions. I HIGHLY recommend this product for children that are tech savvy - it's kept my son busy for hours on end!

Cool Spider Man Toy For Kids
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My son loves spiderman it's his favorite super hero character. So watching him open up and hear spiderman talk to him was one of the greatest things ever. He loves talking to spiderman and going on "adventures" with him. For older kids or adults I don't think the toy has much staying power as spiderman does not do much but for my 7yr old its a dream come true to talk to spiderman and hang out with him. Setting up Spiderman was a breeze it was a bit of a bummer that we had to do a couple of different updates and wait about 30 minutes before we could get it up and running. but after that no problems so far. The only reason Spiderman does not get 5 stars from me is the target audience that would actually enjoy this product is very small.

POPAlexa: got bit by a radioactive Spider
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So let's just swing right into it.... This is a Marvel/Spider-Man fan's must have gadget for their desk/room. This Spider-Man, has the shape and look of the popular POP figures. He is larger then the pictures make him out to be... He doesn't move around like other SPHERO products... he just hangs out on his base (or you can remove him when charged). You interact with a button press, hand motions, and talking to him. Battle, play a game, hang out... or setup a cool wake-up alarm. The voice activation, and answering system is similar to that of Alexa (just not to the breath and level, and stays in the context of Spiderman's world). A really cool gift/toy for the Marvel/Spider-Man fan. Downsides: - The packaging, left some black scuffs on the side of his head, we were able to get them out... but those that like their "Toys" to look as NON-PLAYED with, this may be a concern. - We tried to setup with an iPhone 6SE, and it had all sorts of problems. Then went over to an iPhone 7 on iOS11, and setup very quickly.... so not sure what was going on.

CUTE INTERACTIVE TOY
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sphero - Spider-Man toy is cute. It's made extremely well (very durable), packaging was outstanding, directions so simple a preteen child could set it up (with an Android phone), and it was easy to use. Definitely geared toward children (maybe 10 to 16, maybe younger and/or older depending upon maturity) with the games, etc. that it can do, but anyone that's into Spider-Man may enjoy it! Would be a nice gift for children and grandchildren. But as an older adult I found it a bit boring for myself.
