A surprising effort from M. Night Shyamalan

    M. Night Shyamalan has had his ups and downs as a filmmaker as he debuted with "The Sixth Sense" to critical acclaim and continued to apply his craft with his follow-up "Unbreakable" & "Signs", but then his works started to become stale ("The Village") very quick and at times plain awful ("The Happening"). So for his latest film "Split", he actually showcases the craft that made him into an appealing filmmaker with this surprisingly effective thriller film showcasing an individual who has multiple personalities with one looking to appear very soon to become the dominant one. Actor James MacAvoy does a very good job portraying the tormented antagonist and with a surprising reveal towards the end tied to another one of his films, "Split" manages to deliver.

A Great Followup to Glass and Unbreakable

So this concludes the Shamalan trilogy where superheroes (he calls them this but really superhumans is more accurate) exist. We finally get to see what happened to David Dunn and Mr Glass and it ties well with the third act reveal that Mr S has to put in all his movies. It's a slow burn like the previous two films but probably his most commercially minded film too (of the ones that he created -not Airbender). It's also one of his most satisfying. The set includes a digital copy that's Movies Anywhere compatible and was a real bargain.

    Split Is Excellent!!

Split is quite a good film. James McAvoy stars as a man with a huge amount of multiple personalities. He kidnaps some girls and hides them out in an underground unused part of a zoo. The last personality that he becomes is as wild as an animal, as he chases the girl at the climatic finish. Look for the movie tie-in with Unbreakable as there could be another film to follow this tying in the characters. I saw this one at the theater with my girlfriend and she really enjoyed it too. Check It out. Best Buy was selling this for $5.99 on Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital..What a great bargain, for a great film.

"SIXTH SENSE" and "SIGNS" are still my favorite M. Night Shyamalan movies but this one is a close 3rd. The fascinating story is brilliantly executed but it would not resonate as well without James McAvoy's incredibly nuanced acting. Not since Jeremy Irons "twins" in "DEAD RINGERS" have I been so impressed with an actor's ability to convincingly play multiple personalities. The rest of the cast (particularly Anya Taylor-Joy) are awesome, as well. The very nice image is displayed at 2.40:1 and very smooth 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio adds to the overall presentation.

I am an avid watcher of horror films both old and new, so I do go to the movies pretty frequently, and I do end up gauging the newer movies based on how good I think it will end up being. And sometimes I am surprised by how good a movie ends up being. This was one of those movies. I am thrilled by it. I love how through the movie, you can just look at James McAvoy's facial expressions and be able to know which personality he's portraying. I personally also liked the ending, it made me happy that it was left open for a sequel or even a prequel.

I watched unbreakable and decided to give this movie a shot. Hey, it was cheap on sale so I bought it. Unbreakable was great and this is the 2nd movie in the installment...I know it took them forever to spit out the next in the series. Heck, I didn't know it was a series until this came out. Very weird movie but not bad to watch. James McAvoy does a great job at playing this/these character(s). It definitely gives meaning to this character and the part he will play in the next installment "Glass".

I'm hesitant to review this movie as I don't want to give anything away. As explained in the synopsis, the lead character is dealing with many split personalities (thus the title) and he plays all of the ones we see VERY well. But, as is the case with most of M. Night Shyamalan's movies, there is so much more to this movie than what you expect. Hint: See/re-watch Unbreakable before seeing this. You'll appreciate this movie much, much more if you do. Trust me.

    M. Night Shyamalan's Latest

After a series of so-so films, M. Night Shyamalan returns to his roots and delivers a nearly solid film. "Split" and his earlier film "Unbreakable", are the prequels to his new film "Glass" to be released in early 2019, before seeing "Glass" you'll need to watch those films. As to "Split" lead actor James McAvoy probably delivered the best performance of his life as the nine different characters he plays in this movie. The films drags a bit in the middle but as in all of M. Night Shyamalan's film wait for the ending - it won't let you down.
