It will charge your reader when docked and plugged into power; however, you can charge your reader directly without the dock. I also do not like that the power button on the reader is blocked from access when in the dock in order to wake up the unit in between charges. I would say that the best thing about the dock is that it would make it more difficult for someone to steal your Square reader if you are doing a craft type show and leave your Square sitting out on your table for easy access.
