    Abrams Reboot is Great

I was skeptical of the idea of rebooting the original series with a new crop of actors but JJ Abrams did a great job of crafting an origin story that brought James T. Kirk to meet Spock, Bones, Uhura, Chekov, Sulu and Scotty and take command of the starship Enterprise. A renegade Romulan named Nero is hell bent on revenge for the destruction of his planet during a future point in history which has the Enterprise characters finding their place while under Starfleet training and thus being pushed into duty to save the Earth from being dissolved into a black hole. A very entertaining and well thought out film with fan servicing to the original tv series.

Worth it if you have the right equipment!

This is a great movie made even better by the use of 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos Surround. To really get the benefits of this disc you'll have to have a 4K HDR Blu-Ray Player (MOST 4K players are NOT HDR - there are only 5 or so of those available currently) as well as a TV capable of HDR. Again, most 4K TV's are NOT HDR TV's. In order to get the advantage of Dolby Atmos sound you'd have to have a Receiver capable of Dolby Atmos and a Dolby Atmos Speaker setup. If you just have a 4K Player and 4K TV but not HDR, you won't notice that much difference than the standard Blu-Ray but there will be some. HDR and Dolby Atmos are what really make this specific disc set better than the normal Blu-Ray. Highly recommended if you got the right equipment - excellent use of sight and sound!

An excellent start to the new Star Trek franchise

Star Trek [DVD] [2009] The DVD itself: Comes in a standard jewel case... The film is presented in widescreen format, so it has the black bars at the top and bottom. The special features: "commentary by JJ Abrams" and others is interesting, you get to hear some good stories you wouldn't otherwise hear about the actors and the film. "A new vision" is about production secrets and behind the scenes stuff, its really cool. They could make an entire series just about this stuff and I'd watch it, very fun and interesting. The "Gag reel", they should seriously put this at the end of the film during the credits, like Jackie Chan movies, you will LOL at, and with, the actors and film crew. The movie: As the first of the new Star Trek films based on TOS, I really liked it. The storyline was somewhat convoluted and confusing at times, some scenes seemed like they were "forced" into the film just to pay homage to the original cast and crew. The time spent on character development (while necessary for anyone new to the Star Trek universe and unfamiliar with the original characters), seemed to be a drag on the film since I was already familiar with the characters. Overall, this film did an excellent job of laying the groundwork for all the other Star Trek films that have come out since.

Fantastic Reboot to a Beloved Franchise

Star Trek needs no introduction and the J.J. Abrams reboot certainly has earned high marks among many critics. The new cast and new direction for the Star Trek franchise was certainly a bold move, and in my opinion a successful one at that. This film was more thrilling to me than previous most of the previous iterations in the Star Trek franchise. The UHD presentation for this one is good overall, however there's a caveat. While there are certainly many improvements overall with notable resolution improvements and good use of HDR dynamics and wide color gamut implementation. Still I found this one to be slightly underwhelming due to a problem that I saw that popped up a couple of times, which was macroblocking in some of the brighter highlights. Just to be sure it wasn't a problem with my equipment, I lowered contrast on my set, but it was still readily apparent. It doesn't happen often, but when it showed up, it certainly was noticeable. That being said, the presentation was otherwise pretty satisfactory, albeit not a huge improvement over the standard blu-ray. I can still recommend this one, moreso if you don't already own the blu-ray version.

This 4K is the best way to watch this movie period hands down. The Blu-ray did a great job but this takes that transfer and now makes it killer for sure. Everything just looks better the image just opens up more and the colors along with highlights really shine. If you have the Blu-ray I would say wait for sale this one does come down in price often and jump on the 4k. If you have not seen this movie grab this release you will not be disappointed.

Fairly Uninspired Steelbook for an Inspiring Film

As someone who has not- and still does not care about the Star Trek Franchise collectively, J.J. Abrams Star Trek was an outstanding film that made me care about the crew of the Enterprise, and the adventures that they were to share. As an avid Steelbook Collector, I was hopeful that the film would be released in an equally inspiring Steelbook format- however, this was not the case. While this Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook does have the benefit of not having the Blue BluRay Banner Painted across the top of the Steelbook, it does suffer from having the least appealing box art of any Star Trek (2009) release. The character photos at the top of the Steelbook aren't subtle enough like the UK Design, and when crunched together over the Enterprise ship (of which was the FutureShop Release), it just seems hackneyed. If at all possible, I would recommend getting the FutureShop Release, the Zavvi Release, or either of the German Releases (if you can find them) over this release here. However, those Steelbooks will run you quite a substantial amount- if you are a fan of J.J. Abrams take on the Star Trek Mythos- then this is a release you can settle for that is at a decent price.

I truly enjoy the Star Trek reboot and the ability to move forward in it's own space time continuum. Star Trek has often had the challenge of moving forward with out disrupting the past ("Tell me again why the new Klingon's have those fantastic ridge lines in their skulls?") With the plot, there is freedom to move without having to spend an over abundant time in looking to the archives ("Oh shoot, I can't do X with that character because in 1969, they the series said they had a childhood incident that made them allergic to Tribbles. There goes the whole screen play!") Add the creative freedom, solid acting, great effects, and wonderful back story on our main characters. Enjoy!

I bought this blu-ray for my collection when I saw it on sale for a very good price. I didn't look too closely, and may not have noticed it has only a commentary track and some kind of NASA blu-ray app feature. No extras with this set. No DVD or streaming/download copy included, either. Sound and video quality are great. I noticed right away the sound was mastered at a fairly low level, not uncommon for a lot of shows and movies. As a novice audiophile I assume this was to give lots of headroom for the music and sound to give a good dynamic response. I only have a basic TV setup, without external speakers so to me it just sounds fine, as long as I turn it up. This movie grows on me as I rewatch it. I am a longtime Star Trek fan, and was concerned about the reboot franchise. I still think Star Trek is better on the small screen, but this one gives a pretty compelling story. I think they did a great job with the recasting, and the visuals are really nicely done in a blockbuster sort of genre. LLAP.

This is an awesome movie, and it is a must see especially if you have not seen it in HDR/4K and Atoms!!! It shakes the whole house and I am now hearing sounds that that I never heard from my old 1080P Blu-ray. For whatever reason this is one the the best sounding Atmos movies I own!!! It is the sound that sold me on this movie!! The image is also clearer and shaper. It is a must have for a 4K collection!
