Well Paced Action with Believable Characters

First, let me begin by simply stating that this is a fantastic movie featuring a well-paced and authentic screenplay that takes advantages of the best audio and video production available. The movie features a new villain, new in the sense those who watch the first movie (2009) have not met him before as well as introduces a number of characters and races we know in ways that are believable and fun. While at times the movie is predictable, the film includes some twists and turns that keep you enjoying the entire ride. While some fan favorites may not feature as central a role as one would hope, the characters all play an important role in making this a believable environment. For those with families, this would probably be good for anyone 10-12 years old or older. The movie features some lingerie (well, "sexy" underwear) and a few instances of profanity (s word being the worst). Obviously whether this movie is appropriate would depend on your family, but my personal opinion would be as stated above. The audio in the movie is fantastic and features strong low frequency extensions (aka will make your subwoofer work) when ships go to warp and other events occur which I won't spoil for you. The highs are warm and vibrant and not shrill or harsh. The sound field envelopes you a few times in a full 360º experience for those with surround sound, with phasers firing, characters talking and action occurring on all sides. Overall, the Dolby HD track on the Blu-Ray would be considered a reference quality audio that is perfect to show off a home theater or to marvel at with your family. This is engaging and purposeful sound that truly transforms the experience. The video is sharp and crisp, in beautiful 1080p (Blu-Ray version) with saturated colors where appropriate. The film benefits from a larger screen as you can get more details and can truly appreciate the scale and work that was put into this, but any device will do. There is a little bit of film grain (the little speckles on the picture) which is really only noticeable if looking for it on the darker scenes and in some of the fog like effects. Throughout the film, the camera is very close to the characters, showing detail and color, but can get a bit much if the constant camera motion bothers you. CGI was well done, and never appeared "fake", all of it blended well and felt like part of the set. For some viewers, you may want to watch this at night, or in a room that you can control the light as the sunlight on the TV may wash out some of the blacks, causing you to miss some of the detail that can be found in the dark colors and the blacks. Overall, this film is a wonderful experience. It will stimulate all of your movie-goer senses (auditory, visual, and touch if you have a subwoofer). The script is well written, nicely paced, and albeit predictable at times, wholly enjoyable. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys Sci-Fi, Action, and great character interaction.

Great movie, 1080 version is more colorful...

This was one of the first movies I purchased in 4k. I love the movie and already owned the standard blu ray. My initial impressions were not great as I felt that the colors were muted in the 4k HDR version. This is often the case though as the colors are often more realistic. The HDR is spectacular in terms of highlights, but I kinda prefer the 1080 version because it's colors are more vibrant.

This isnt your fathers Star Trek

Let me start off by saying that this is a refreshing new adaptation of the original Star Trek ll: Wrath of Kahn. If they remade it word for word, scene by scene, it would be boring and trite. That being said, Into the Darkness is one of the best movies that 2013 has to offer. Despite the infamous screen flares, the cinematography is stunning in every way. Cumberbatch, who plays Kahn, is one of the most intense actors out there and he really stands out in this role. The action sequences are well put together and believable. If you love action, scifi, romance, comedy, you will love this movie!

Best Star Trek yet, and phenominal video and audio

Yes, I am a Star Trek geek. I have loved the series ever since it's maiden voyage. I forgive a lot (yes, Star Trek III was pretty lane - even I admit that#. But the new strain is really something else, and the cast truly brought it together in this one. Cumberbatch was the quintissential villian, evil with enough of pathos to almost make us feel sorry for him at times. Pine and Quinto have gotten both their roles and their relationships solidified. These is an ensemble among the entire cast that took at least an entire season for the TV series #all of them# to blossom. And while the video quality is really terrific, the audio is among the best I have ever heard from my system. Surround channels are truly distinct and attention grabbing. While I do not have a Dolby Atmos set up, the 9.2 surround I do have #Marantz 7702 Mk2 pre-pro, full MIrage HT speaker system and 300 wpc Outlaw amp along with dual 800 watt SVS subs) got quite a workout and sounded magnificent. Run, don't walk, to Best Buy to pick this up if you have a 4k TV and 4k blu ray player.

Not quite as good as previous film but still A1

Let me start off by saying I have NEVER watched Star Trek movies or the TV shows before the first Star Trek movie in my life (I am 37 years old.) It was a combination of not being a huge fan of sci-fi movies and being "Team Star Wars" because I didn't have any desire to play "catch up" on hundreds of episodes of a TV series and a handful of movies. Once I read that the first movie started an alternate timeline in the Star Trek universe it piqued my interest and I am certainly glad that it did. You are introduced to Khan and given some of his backstory. The visuals and sound are amazing and the plot is action packed from start to finish. For the Star Wars fanboys (or casual fans who are anti Star Trek and don't know why) you won't be disappointed with the purchase if you accept the fact that the only similarities with Star Wars are the spaceships and weird species (and in the case of "The Force Awakens" JJ Abrams is the director.) They are 2 distinct franchises and there is room in your heart for both of them.

Great follow-up to the original. The story back filled many questions from the original and moved the story line to a higher plateau. One of the good points, was that the people behind the movie and listened to the Trekkie fan base and addressed many of their concerns with the sequel. Action packed....great character interaction and a story line that begs for the third installment.

I am a longtime Trekkie and think the reboot is fantastic. There were a couple of distinct homages to Star Trek II in Star Trek XII but many differences. Star Trek has been an example of an ensemble cast working well together over the years. The reboot does hit a wall in that manner because the new cast hasn't worked long together, but that will pass in time.

A step down from the last one, but still fun.

Star Trek Into Darkness is a surprisingly good action film from the generation. The first two-thirds of the film do a great job of continuing the story that has been set up since the first film in this new rebooted franchise. However, the final third fails to be original, instead blatantly ripping off plot points from a certain other famous Star Trek adventure(no spoilers here, sorry). Overall, the film is pretty intelligent, much more than most sci-fi nowadays. The video quality is magnificent. Truly a reference disc. Good grain on display, awesome color, and zero banding or macroblocking make this a reference display disc. Unfortunately, the audio is pretty lackluster. It's been filtered and that affects the deeper end of the audio. Very disappointing. Extras are good. Unfortunately, the exclusive extras are not on disc, but through CinemaNow. Just a heads-up. Overall, I definitely recommend this film, flaws and all.

Though i would not be what one deems a 'trekkie' I have knowledge of the original series, plot, characters and backgrounds. This is another excellent continuation of the classic Star Trek series. The writers have done an excellent job following the original series story line, from Kirk's mentor to Khan. Thanks to todays technology, there are incredible special effects. The actors should be commended for their efforts in mimicking the original characters personality & manorisms. It is obvious they have studied their characters from the early days of Star Trek.

This is a great re imagination to the original series of Star Trek and the film The Wrath of Khan. I really enjoyed the bonus content that BestBuy gives customers with this exclusive, but I just wish it wasn't done only one CinemaNow. They should have put it on a disc like the Canadian BBY did along with the CinemaNow content like they did for their Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey exclusive they had earlier in the year. In the end, this is a must by for fans of SciFi and the new version of the Star Trek franchise looking to bring in new fans.

Can't give a true review without revealing a huge plot spoiler but that cat is probably already out of the bag. B Cumberbatch did an excellent job playing his part; the rest of the cast continued their great portrayals from the first movie. Although it was an important plot point, I was a little disappointed that Scotty (Simon Pegg) was absent for a good portion of the movie. It was definitely written in such a way that Cumberbatch's character can easily return for a future plot against Kirk and the Enterprise.

Great sequel that keep the quality of the original

I think this film gets a bad rep! Yes it has the same villain from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, but this is a Khan that has not had the same experiences of the other Khan. Yes there are a few scenes very reminiscent of Star Trek II, but then there are several references to the other Star Trek films that are largely ignored by the critiques. This has a great storyline and is not a retread of Wrath of Khan. Again I look forward to seeing where this crew and cast will take us next!

    Into Darkness

I am not a huge fan of huge Hollywood special effects spectacles, nor do I consider myself a Trekkie, but I do love the original Star Trek, particularly the original six films. As much hate "Into Darkness" gets from fans (even from those who enjoyed the 2009 "Star Trek" predecessor), I personally loved this experience, especially on the stunning Blu-ray. J.J. Abrams knows how to deliver a big budget package that even a seasoned cinephile might enjoy.

I am not a 'Trekkie' but i do enjoy watching sci-fi movies. This one in particular is a fun and entertaining experience. The cast is great and the plot is pretty good too. I own the first movie and this one is just as good, which is a pretty bit feat to accomplish for a sequel. The blu-ray came with a digital copy as well which works with both iTunes and Ultraviolet. Overall, this is a movie i will watch many times and one that i highly recommend.

    Really Good Sequel

The movie was really good. A well done sequel to the 2009 movie. However, it is still not Star Trek. I will leave it at that. I enjoy the remakes for what they are. Visually the movie is almost perfect except for Abrams stupid lens flares. Sound was amazing as well. The storyline falls flat however, Pine leaves alot to be desired as Kirk, Quinto does spock nearly as well as Nimoy, though. The only thing that as a Trek Nerd, I personally hate, is the way Abrams made the Klingon's look, they look horrible. It is one aspect of the TNG/DS9 series he should have kept. Their ships look nice, but their physical appearance is horrible.
