Where the prequels failed ever so gloriously, this film makes up for it in excess. A true homage to the original trilogy, this was a phenomenal movie. Dropping a lot of the CGI which killed the feel for the prequels, bringing back makeup, props, puppets and actors adds a real feel to the film, allowing you to connect with the characters much better. The plot and storyline is very similar to A New Hope (sometimes painfully so), but that was remedied by creating new characters with whom you actually connect and care about - you want to learn backstories and see character development and growth. What CGI is present only adds to the whole experience. My only two gripes with the film are that seeing Kylo Ren's face was a let down. Adam Driver did a decent acting job, but his face didn't quite match the fury or [supposed] horror that his character is supposed to present. Had we [as the audience] never seen his face through this whole film, it would have added so much more to the character. My second gripe is that there was too much humor. More specifically, slapstick humor. The situational humor and the quips or lines were well done, but there are several slpastick moments that completely removed me from the film and I had to take a few seconds/minutes to get back into it - it just ruined the pace of the film for me. In my opinion, this is a perfect sequel to the original trilogy, and totally worth owning.

The 3d on this disk is amazing. Matches the cinema experience if not better. The movie is one of the better Star Wars movies as well.

What can I say. When a 3d film is released only in 2d, I look anywhere. Usually online I can find it in another country and actually still in region A (just get region Free player). Force Awaken got almost everyone who loves 3D. Ok when I watch films I do so on a 165" movie theater screen (Recently down from 180") with full 7.1 surround sound and the Buttkicker transducer system. This is not to Boast but to give an idea of the clarity that I rate both 4k and 1080p films. 1st off regardless if you are huge into 4k or still collect Blu-ray; I will add that with today's upscaling technology and with upscaling technology on theater projectors that the difference between Blu-ray & 4k is really is minimal. I will say that going over 75" that you will likely see a difference and recommend 4k for the future proofing of your collection. I found the 3D version of the film (as usual) to blow away the 2D to 3D conversions. Just comparing the force frozen phaser bolt between true 3d source and the 2d to 3d conversion tells the entire story! Ahhh but there's more! We got goodies! I'm talking about some fantastic extras that were NOT included in any of the other releases and makes this film worth paying the stand alone price again. I waited until Force day and snagged this for around $20. I'm so happy with this.

**The following may contain "spoilers" if you have not seen it by now ** It is basically 30 years after the Battle of Endor and remnants of the Old Empire have regrouped and formed "The First Order". Luke is in hiding and the "Resistance" is led by General Leia among others. A new "enemy" has emerged as well for the "Dark Side", Kylo Ren, but he is no Sith, not yet anyway. Old favorites are back from the original series as well as the droids from all 6 prior movies. A new droid makes it's appearance, BB-8 and is really a good character. "Rey", a scavenger, may just yet find that she has "Force" abilities she may or may not be completely aware of until the very end. There are familiar situations, etc. that "take you back" to the past, for certain. That didn't bother me, really. Hey, as long as I didn't see JarJar Binks in this one, I am a much happier SW fan. lol If you really want a nice package for your Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Movie, you really should get the Steelbook Edition and to compliment your other 6, if you have them.

The Force Awakens is about reuniting with old friends, catching up with where they've been, and beginning a new journey alongside them. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher rightly earn top billing -- this is their movie and their franchise -- but in this movie they're proverbially passing the torch to a new generation of heroes in a film that's as much a building block towards the future as were any of the prequels, but this time building towards the unknown rather than the known, going boldly, to borrow from another Abrams-influenced franchise, rather than simply looking back. It's a terrific film, one with many layers comprised of perfectly executed fan service, relatable themes, new directions, old concepts, and precious few reasons to moan and groan. As he did with the Star Trek reboot, Abrams has delivered a knockout of a movie in the most popular franchise cinema has ever seen. Disney's Blu-ray is terrific. Video is outstanding, audio isn't far behind, and the supplements are impressive, though there's certainly room for more in a future special edition. Needless to say, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens is going to be the Blu-ray that defines the entire year, and it earns my highest recommendation.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS isn't particularly innovative, but to its credit, it isn't about trying to reinvent the wheel. It's about reminding us that the wheel still goes round, and that we like going round. The greatest strength of the movie is how accessible it is to newcomers. Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren, Poe Dameron, Maz Kanata, and BB-8 are all interesting and entertaining. The original STAR WARS movie treated its universe's backstory as something that everyone in-story already knew about, and that we could glean here and there as needed. The way that existing characters are presented in THE FORCE AWAKENS allows for the same thing. If you know who Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia are, great; the movie does right by all three. But if you don't, all that matters is that Rey and Finn have only ever even heard of these people, either. As for the Blu-ray, the bonus features are solid though they feel less than comprehensive. The full documentary, "SECRETS OF 'THE FORCE AWAKENS': A CINEMATIC JOURNEY", is a mostly satisfying survey of the film's production, from the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney all the way up to postproduction visual effects. Most of the rest of the supplements really feel like they ought to have been included in their entirety in the doc itself; most are represented in abridged form there. Still, they do stand alone nicely and I can appreciate the balance between covering these subjects more attentively, and keeping the making-of doc moving along. Note that there are six deleted scenes included here, but if you redeem the Disney Movies Anywhere Digital HD code, you'll have access to a seventh, "TUNNEL STANDOFF", which is easily the most entertaining of the lot! It's clearly incomplete, as it lacks any kind of resolution, but Harrison Ford and John Boyega had such delightful chemistry that it's worth the 59 seconds to watch. Lastly, the Best Buy exclusive SteelBook. To be honest, I was underwhelmed by the very simplistic aesthetic of Kylo Ren on the front and Captain Phasma on the back, though it's growing on me. I do appreciate that the art under the trays inside the package is the same image (more or less) that appears under the CD package tray of the soundtrack album, of the MILLENNIUM FALCON confronting two TIE Fighters.

It looks and sounds good. Like other people say, you have to turn up the sound more on this movie like with other Disney movies. I still like the original Star Wars movies the best.

As a child of the 70s, growing up on the original Star Wars (and the phenomena it created- for those who weren't lucky enough, for example, school (yes, SCHOOL,) took us twice on field trips to see Star Wars in the theater,) the original film and trilogy holds a special place in my youth. And while the prequel trilogy is much (and often rightfully so,) derided, The Force Awakens brought me (New) hope (ha!) That perhaps some of the magic has returned. And that's really what has been the problem with the saga since Return of the Jedi ended and with each film since. The proper balance of good storytelling with a near childlike magical wonder. The original trilogy, throughout all three films, whether by intent or luck, managed this balance in a way that no other Star Wars film made since can quite capture. For example, the great and abundant humor throughout the original films was (same word again,) BALANCED perfectly. It helped take the edge off of scenes that otherwise may have been too much for younger audiences. When it came to the prequel trilogy, this humor went from striking a perfect balance to becoming so overbearing that it rarely allowed to appreciate any sort of serious scenes. In fact, the same sort of ham-fisted humor made its way into the serious scenes by (among the MANY flaws,) allowing the largely wooden acting to be just as heavy-handed. It was all too much. When it comes to Force Awakens, and made worse in films following it, they've reigned in the humor to a perfect balance again, but some of the more serious tones have become overbearing. They've tried to "grow up" the stories to match the ages of many of us that grew up with that original series. And that's the shame. I, like many of my age group, grew up on Star Wars and we wouldn't have been able to if it weren't for the way the stories had been told: accessible to even the youngest of us. Watching these new films, myself with a young son much the same age as I was when Star Wars hit; they attempt to make it accessible, but just do not. My son enjoys scenes and characters, but many of the plotlines are simply told in a way that are meant for those of us who WERE kids, but not for those who still ARE kids. Of the newest three films, Force Awakens is clearly the best. JJ Abrams is a wonderful storyteller who, of the three directors so far, still retains much of the wonder at the big universe he's been granted access to. Rogue One and Last Jedi seem just happy to take what's given and make it more complicated, more *adult* in their stories. If you're interested in the best of the new films, Force Awakens is the best choice. While it may not be perfect, it's the closest you'll find in reminding you of your first childhood experiences with Star Wars.
