Good but Divisive Movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I didn't really have a lot of problems with the characters actions in this movie. I thought the social commentary on the gambling planet was a bit more than I am use to in a Star Wars movie and still have mixed feelings about changing the ending from a group shot of the characters to an epilogue returning to the gambling planet before the final credits.

For whats been done to starwars, it isn't that bad
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I loved the original Trilogy (IV, V, VI). I was excited for the prequels. I went and saw Episode I, and came back irritated at midiclorians. Episode II and III came out and I came to appreciate how Episode I wasn't that bad after all. I'll take little Anakin and Jar Jar over watching Hayden Christensen act, midiclorians and all. Now, we get a continuation of the saga! Yes, keep the past in the past, and lets move on! Wait... we are throwing away all the novels that have kept the star wars universe alive despite the horrible prequels, and calling them non-canon so you can rewrite things? This means you've got a better plan, right? Not really. Episode VII, beautifully filmed, like Prometheus and Valerian, I wanted to love the movie because of the stunning visuals, the beautiful sets and worlds... but have to watch it on mute with no subtitles on to not be put off by bad writing and acting. Episode VII seemed to borrow way too heavily from Episode IV, and in the way it was laid out, left a lot of unanswered questions: Who is Ray? Who are her parents? Why is she so Force sensitive? Who is Snoke? Why is he so powerful? Where did he come from? Why is he the Supreme Leader? Why is there even a resistance when the Republic is still in existence? Shouldn't the Republic BE the Resistance? Why is Luke hiding? Find out in Episode VIII... maybe. Episode VIII come out, and again, its beautifully filmed with as much physical effects as it can have, but it doesn't answer the questions very well if at all. We find out why Luke is in hiding as a hermit. This disappoints many people that Luke isn't heroic and they call him a coward, but who did he learn this behavior from? Obi-Wan hid out on Tatooine and let the Empire rule. Yoda hid out on Dagobah and watched the Empire and Vader rule. Both powerful masters who for some reason hid themselves away when they could have been useful and had to be pulled from their hiding spot. So is it really that hard to believe that Luke would do the same? It may not be what fans WANTED him to do, but it was exactly what he was TRAINED to do. Then we get absolutely no information about Snoke, Luke doesn't even tell us that he knows who he was, and he never even picks up a lightsaber. Supreme... why exactly? Ray's lineage is a big letdown, unless its a lie, kind of like "Wanna know how I got these scars?" from the Joker. Is it a lie to manipulate her, or is it a big reveal that there is no big reveal? Will we find out in the next episode that they really were someone important? Ben Solo left with a handful of students we find out when Luke tells the story... where are those students? Will they show up in Episode IX? Where did those students that Luke was teaching come from? Will that be another "A Starwars Story" like Rogue One? I'd watch that. What bothered me the most (aside from bad space logic) was the other main characters and what truly felt like filler so they weren't sitting there twiddling their thumbs while they just slowly did a White Bronco space chase. Why did they drop out of hyperspace in that spot? Was it a random choice? Why were their fuel reserves so low? We had to slog through pointless side quests while we waited for the scenes that contained Jedi and Sith, honestly. I didn't mind the Jedi and Sith storyline. That was good, enjoyable, and didn't have to drag out for 2 hrs and 45 minutes. The parts I enjoyed, I truly enjoyed. The parts I didn't, I will likely heat up a burrito or pop some popcorn or make a sandwich and let it play when watching it at home. This one truly didn't feel like a rehash of episode V... I was relieved that Ray or Ben didn't lose a body part. For the first time in these movies after the original Trilogy, I have no idea where this last film will go. I don't know what direction they will take it, I know where I want it to go, but I don't know if it will go that direction or not, and that is at least a bit refreshing after Episode I, II, III, VII. I recommend watching it, even if you never watched the prequels. Watch VII only so you know whats going on in VIII, and then decide if the moments you enjoy are enough to warrant buying it and waiting for IX.

good movie...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.i am a star wars fan since the beginning. I don't know why people love to go on any site possible to rip this movie. ....hey let me go to facebook and complain, let me go to imdb and complain, let me cry about it on best buy site without buying the movie, just so people can hear me cry about it here too... Yes, it is not like the Empire Strikes Back, or any of the other original Star Wars movies...but it kind of is...training a jedi, there is a trap, a new jedi in training gets brought before the emperor/supreme leader to be turned, Kylo strikes down snoke--just like Vader turns on the emperor, kylo speaks of joining together to rule the galaxy--much like vader to luke, they talk to each other from a far because of their connection, the good guys barely escape to set up a finale, Luke creates a distraction to let the Rebels escape and then disappears just like Obi-wan in a New Hope.... Yes, there was one ridiculous scene with Leia, but other than that, I enjoyed the movie. People get too bent about a movie and a series and say stupid stuff like..."I'm done with this"..."I'm not seeing another SW film".... they sound like the same people who vowed not to watch another baseball game because of the last strike that cut short the season...how many of them don't watch baseball any more??? They will be the same one's going on opening night of Episode 9. I feel bad for those people who are already thinking negative about the movie...I feel bad for them because they wake up every morning and find a new site to cry about this movie... Oh wait, did I go to Amazon yet? Hmmm...Target sells it as well, let me go pollute their site with my whining... Take it for what it is, people. It's not going to be Episodes 4-6...live with it. As for my review....I enjoyed it. Yes, it's not as good as the Force Awakens. But then people complained about that as well, for being pretty much a copy of a New Hope... I have enjoyed all the films in the franchise, maybe not episode 1 and 2 as much, but that's why episodes 4-6 came out first... All in all, I really enjoyed the film. I didn't go in with any expectations, nor did I want, or expect, any "character progression" with this movie. There are some scenes they may have been able to do without, but hey, I'm not going to break those down....I've done that enough.

Visually Appealing, But A Downer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I did not get to see this movie in theaters when it was released due to a disability that I have. I was able to pre-purchase it before the DVD release via VUDU and streamed it through my 4k UHD 65" television. Yes, the action and visual spectacles were there I must admit. The expansion of the new characters were presented more thoroughly and new characters were added. I do plan to purchase the 4k UHD DVD for the sake of having a physical copy for my collection. I have my Best Buy Reward Zone points to pay for a chunk of the cost. :). I am a big fan of Best Buy and it is evident by my being an Elite Plus member. *Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven't already seen the movie.* However, in relation to this episode, one of our beloved characters was cut out for a chunk portion of the movie that I would have loved to seen more of. And, another made the ultimate sacrifice at the ending which I feel could have been done in a different way to keep the character alive for the next installment. Yes, it is still possible to see this character in the next film. I really just don't want to see that character in the way that has been speculated in Episode 9. In the Empire Stikes back, Han Solo was frozen in carbonite and was being taken to Jabba the Hut for the bounty, but that movie left hope for the next installment of possibly saving him. This one did not leave "Hope", for the one character that has been a beacon in Episodes 4 through 6. It also took the the use of "The Force" way beyond what it was used for in past episodes. The top main powerful live villain in this episode, nor the ones in previous episodes, did not project their image through the use of "The Force". They were projected from holographic imaging devices. I thought this new way of projecting images of a live character was a little far-fetched. Sadly, the loss of Carrie Fisher leaves no hope of her character's return in Episode 9. That is unless she had already filmed her scenes for the next episode that we are not aware of, which I highly doubt. I did not suspect that this episode would end up the way that it did and I was highly disappointed. The ending was a downer to me and it left no hope for one character's live return in the next, and supposedly, last installment of this trilogy. That is really all that I have to say about this film. It is my own personal opinion and likely will not reflect those of others. That is why I am giving this film 3-stars, and only for the action, visualization, and John Williams touch with the music. I am only recommending this to friends just for the sake of keeping up with what has gone on before the next movie is released.

Incredible Star Wars film!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I went into this movie thinking it was going to suck. The promotional things I saw online made it look like an SJW nightmare. My bf of 35 years and huge fellow SW fan saw it first and loathed it. Like, he's literally fuming at how bad it was. So I was armed going in expecting to hate it. But it was incredible. So good! Maybe I can just divorce myself from all the negative press and hive-mind mentality that happens during big releases like this, but I thoroughly bought the story and how it unfolds. Luke WAS consistent with the boy who turned into a man in the OT. He's a very flawed character. But if you can't accept that you probably convinced yourself otherwise when you were 12 y/o and can't budge off that fantasy of him you built in your head decades ago. It is beautifully shot with a tremendous soundtrack. Visually as good as any SW ever. I loved all the story arcs and understood why they were included. It has an amazing message and leaves things wide open for the next and last of the trilogy. I know this is the 4K version I'm reviewing but I also saw it in 3D and that is the version I prefer but unfortunately you have to order it from overseas like Amazon.UK because a 3D version is not presently available. But the 4K should look as good as 4K can going by how it presented in the theaters. It's a must own for SW lovers. For those that hated it or only saw it once, I suggest you sit down and watch it again by yourself. Really give it a chance. Even though I loved it the first time I saw it, upon further viewing I appreciated it even more.

Loved it, hated it. It's Star Wars what can I say?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Loved how Luke used the force in such a powerful metaphysical way, rather than the typical lightsaber duel....although yes, lightsabers are cool. But I hated that he would have any moment that would make him want to kill his apprentice. Really, this is not the Luke we know, who wouldn't even give up on the most evil lord of the galaxy in Return of the Jedi! Family was the theme in the original trilogy, but this movie completely ignores such an important aspect of these stories. Luke and Leia barely had any reunion, and it was almost like "Hey how's it going"; it was that shallow. Yes, of course, this is a pass the torch time, but in this movie it was more of a leave the torch out and see who grabs it. No lineage to connect the old to the new, just hey here's are some new people who seem to have the force for no good reason. As predictable as it would have been, it would have been nice if this movie revealed that Luke was Rey's father, to explain the clearly strong force she is supposed to possess...just like Luke, because of his father. That fact produced one of the most epic lines in movie history "I'm a Jedi, like my father before Me". Randomness has no heart to it. And that's what the first trilogy had.. heart and family. If you take that out, you really have a different story that almost negates the past rather than building on it. But overall, the movie itself, other than the Rose story which seemed boring and useless plot wise, had some good moments and great CG effects. And its Star Wars,so it's hard not to like it, even if it's not exactly Stars Wars.

Incredible
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The movie was absolutely amazing, but not without faults just like every movie ever made. I am a person who reads all the novels, watched the Clone Wars series and watched the Rebels series all multiple times for years, truly giving me insight to how the force truly works and how much we really don’t know about it. Connecting me with the life in it on a deeper level that you just don’t get by only watching the movies. I can say, this is where the story went, love it or hate it it’s what happened in this galaxy and that’s what was told by the story tellers. Where it goes next no one knows, that’s what a story in a galaxy does, entirely unpredictable, exciting and sometimes horrifying, alot like reality. I don’t entirely discredit the negative reviews, a lot of them are trolls, (if you actually read the negative reviews like I did you can tell they don’t “get it” or are flat out hating) or people who had expectations on where the story should go and it didn’t go their way. Some are people who don’t fully grasp what Star Wars is. Some people just don’t like Star Wars. And that’s ok. But if you have any interest in Star Wars or SciFi at all watch it. It’s funny, it’s exciting and heartbreaking. There will be complaints because it’s not perfect. But also realize that The Last Jedi is a very small piece of a much larger unexplored galaxy that anyone could ever imagine, and it’s constantly evolving.

Great Movie, but Confused by Neg Reviews
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was an awesome film with great acting. I was never bored. I feel like I'm in an alternative universe where up is down and etc. So weird that someone could say this was a bad movie. Yeah, they could not like the direction it went, but to say it was bad? That just baffles me. I loved the OT and it they still are my favorites, so it's not a generational thing for me as to why I enjoyed it. I see haters all the time mentioning that. But, overall, I don't think people hated it for the right reasons. I think a valid reason to think it was bad would be not liking the pacing or some of the silly 'chase' scenes where the First Order is just slowly, catching up and waiting for them to run out of fuel. But they did have reasoning in it. The writing wasn't lazy in that sense, just they could've done something else, but it didn't bother me enough to not like it. I feel strange that some people that loved Rogue One didn't like this movie. I thought Rogue One was okay, I appreciate what they tried to do, but I found it a rehash and boring. I mean the acting was so muted with the main characters, especially Jyn. She spoke in monotone for most of the movie and the dialogue didn't engage me. I just found it boring and too 'many look at me' moments for fan service. But I didn't hate it. It's just weird to hate a movie that was competent. That's my point I guess. If you have hate something, have a good reason for it. Like the acting was bad and plot was badly written, etc.

Great Movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Hands down one of the best Star Wars films in the franchise. I have been following Star Wars pretty much since 1999 when Phantom came out and I have have been disappointed with the 1-3 When "The Force Awakens" came out in 2015 it felt like it was very "A New Hope" just styled different. That being said "The Last Jedi" felt like a hybrid of "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" . This gives me (A New Hope) that episode 9 is going to be something 100% different and I feel like they are phasing out all the characters that we know and love and putting them to rest, while we are getting ready for a whole new generation of Star Wars fans. It's crazy to think that we are currently in the 3rd generation of Star Wars and pretty soon we are going to be in the 4th generation. It's also funny how everyone said the original Star Wars was going to be a failure. (Spoilers from here on out) My overall review of this film was it is what it needs to be. The fight with Kylo and Rey was epic, the last battle was visually incredible. The plot twist with the death of Snoke was beautifully done. The "death" of Leia was kinda cheesy in my opinion, but overall it was ok. My favorite scene in the whole film was the jump to lightspeed at the end of the film. I will be waiting to purchase this movie to see if they do a special edition like they did on "The Force Awaken." Thanks for reading this review.

People are overreacting
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. They made a HUUUUUUUGE MISTAKE switching directors for this film. HUGE. THAT BEING SAID The majority of people who hate this movie hate it because the story didn't follow the narrative they thought it should. WHICH I agree with. I did NOT like what they made Luke into in this film. AT ALL. However, I do not think it is fair to list this film as "horrible" or "terrible" simply because you think the story should have gone another way. As a film that is now forever canon in the Star Wars universe... I was displeased. However, as a standalone film this movie is fantastic. So, basically if you don't care about Star Wars and what happens yadda yadda, great movie...if you do... run the other way you're probably not going to like this. I do have plenty of friends who love Star Wars and loved this movie, and I have plenty that hate this more than they hate anything they've ever hated. Don't get me wrong this movie is crammed with a few very....very cringe inducing moments, without spoilers I'll just say "green milk" and "high waisted pants" and "superwoman" those who have seen it will know exactly what I mean. My biggest gripe was with the ultimate plot driver "we're running out of fuel" I mean really? After the last movie...that's the best you could come up with?

Narrative Mess with Nice Visuals and Decent Action
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really don't want this review to be part of the Fan Wars surrounding this movie, so I'm trying to take it on its own merits. If you go to movies for the story, and especially for character development, you probably won't find a lot to love here. Characters' decisions seem more driven by what might surprise the audience or what moves the plot in the correct direction than something an actual human being would do in a given circumstance. What attempts there are to show character growth, are almost inevitably undercut by actual events of the film. For example, one character is chastised early on for launching a risky attack that jeopardizes people lives for a tactical advantage. At the end of the film, he calls off a second attack because he's learned that people matter more than beating the enemy. In isolation, this seems fine, but in the context of the moment, continuing with the attack was the only realistic hope of preserving the remaining members of the Resistance. You can see the writer's intention to establish character growth, but the execution is strangely self-defeating. There are also some basic plotting problems, including a nearly hour-long sequence spent planetside that has zero actual impact on the main plot. Disturbingly (and hopefully coincidentally), all nonwhite characters including fan-favorite Finn, newcomer Rose, and the mysterious rogue played by Benicio Del Toro, are shunted into this essentially pointless narrative aside. They are there prevented from contributing to the central struggle in any meaningful way until that second risky attack, which, again, is called off to show another character's supposed growth. In the end, victory--such as it is--is achieved through a thinly-justified deus ex machina rather than any conscious decision by a character, which is another classic narrative "sin." While the story is a bit of a bloated mess, you can't deny that the visuals are very well done. Locations and visual setpieces are impressive and immediately iconic. Ship-to-ship combat sequences are also thrilling, though person-to-person struggles are more of a mixed bag, with the lightsaber sequences in particular feeling a little disjointed and *ahem* forced. Taken in isolation, this isn't the terrible movie some pretend. If you can overlook the narrative, there's some solid action and sumptuous visuals to enjoy here. If you've had fun watching the Transformers series in theaters, chances are you'll enjoy this one too, Two Stars: "Fair" by Best Buy's rating system.

Disappointed.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.IMO, this is the worst Star Wars film ever created. Much in it is questionable with things that happen containing too many holes through the story. (Look out! A few spoilers listed)+I've waited since I was ten years old (in '83 when I first saw Return of the Jedi) to see Luke again in these films and Hamill's portrayal & the script presented him as a bitter, broken old man --that astral projects himself in battle? Very far fetched. Won't even get into how ridiculous it was with Leia floating through space! And this weird mind link between Snoke, Rey & Kylo was leaving me scratching my head. Then the light saber battle: was just boring --looked more like a ballet routine rather than a fight! Only good thing about this film was Rose & Poe. Seen it once in the theater & bought the DVD but its still in the shrink wrap since the week it was released. Just got it to be part of the collection. I loved Force Awakens, but this film here was just terrible. Sadly, the next one sounds even worse.... Least Solo & Rogue One were excellent.

Decent, but not Star Wars
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The movie was entertaining, and if you're looking at it from a pure sci-fi standpoint, OK. If you're looking at it as a Star Wars film, it's the worst one. I consider it beneath Phantom Menance (which is not as bad as Attack of the Clones to me, anyway--but Last Jedi is beneath THAT, too). I get it. All the younger people think it's fantastic that Star Wars is 'inclusive' and 'geared toward a new generation.' Good for you. Problem is, I'm only 40. I'm not old, I'm not dead, and I'm sure not ready to say Star Wars should no longer be for classic fans. You take the couple of Han and Leia and break them apart for the last movie. Tough to swallow, but I'll deal. Then you make the bad guy a wuss who gets beat easily by an untrained, whiny girl with no believable power. Stupid, but I'll ignore it. Now you take the hero, the man we've all been waiting decades to see come back in Luke Skywalker, and you destroy his character. Ridiculous. Not only is he a hermit (so was Obi-Wan, but for a completely believable reason), he's bitter (not light-hearted like Obi-Wan or Yoda) and doesn't even show the level of power he should (beyond a force projection?) This movie was clearly written to destroy the old and pave the way for the new. Problem is, the old was better--not because it was older, but because it's better. Luke is better than Rey. Period. Rey is a poor lead character. Lando is better than Rose. Period. Rose is a waste of a new character (we didn't have enough 'inclusion' that we had to add another for no reason?) Finn is good so I'm fine with him replacing Han. Poe is OK but was not handled well in this movie. Kylo Ren is great, but again, the writers don't seem to know what to do here. Now with Carrie Fisher's passing, we have nobody from the classic movies, unless some serious re-writing is done. Otherwise, I won't be interested in Episode IX. Everyone else seems to adore this movie, but are they true fans of the classic movies, or do they just love to see things go in a new direction just to make it go in a new direction? The bottom line is, is this for classic Star Wars fans? No.

Best Star Wars since the 80s
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Don’t mind the haters who spend decades imagining nothing but happy years for Luke in a saga that’s largely about family mistakes and incorrectly read visions BEFORE learning from them and rising up in the end. Luke does just that in the end. Both familiar and fresh The Last Jedi gets your mind racing about how father and son (Vader and Luke) shared some similarities in how they handled trauma and visions but also where they differed in terms of control over anger and morality. Meanwhile, the Rey and Ben Solo story goes very interesting places and becomes a guilty pleasure your heart knows is wrong but your mind is intrigued by. Throughout the film the visuals and sound are top notch and this is a great Blu-Ray for calibration of black levels and contrast for any display or sound system. Let’s face it. Not all movies are owners but Star Wars always is. I think this film will seem better once IX is out and ends because this isn’t the end of the story. It’s just the dark, complicated middle chapter of setbacks and life lessons for the heroes.

First Star Wars that is not for everyone
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Your enjoyment of this movie will depend on the way in which you watch it. If you want something similar to the The Force Awakens, where it is exciting and easily enjoyed by almost everyone- but suffers at times for not taking enough risks- then this will not be for you. If you care about themes, character development, and twists that while somewhat inconsequential provide intriguing ideas, then this would be more your cup of tea. A lot of people will find the Canto Bight sequence of the movie pointless... and that is because they didn't watch the movie like the latter person who cares about how the characters develop and how the themes are demonstrated. It really is a very well thought out movie if you try to understand it rather than nitpick flaws that it has here and there. Nitpicking will surely make you hate the movie... in the same way that if you nitpick Return of the Jedi suddenly it becomes the worst in the series. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion though, so just because I watched it one way, doesn't mean you have to also.

Mixture of Star Wars and GOT
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a fan of both Star Wars and Game of Thrones, this movie had me riveted to my seat. Not only was I surprised by who lived and who died, I enjoyed all the misdirection. Just when I thought a character would do something predictable, they went in another direction. There were also epic battle sequences and, for the first time, we got to see what rich people do in a Star Wars movie. This film had the traditional characters do some unexpected things, but when you realize it takes place thirty years after the events of Return of the Jedi, you realize that people change a little bit over a lifetime. Luke is now a grumpy old hermit, Leia learned how to use the Force, and Yoda has learned that the old Jedi ways were not as great as he thought they were. Yes, Yoda makes a brief appearance at the perfect time. Some fans may not like the direction that some of the characters go in. I thought it was refreshing and can't wait to see how they tie up all the loose ends they left in this installment.
