Pro: -Value -Comfortable wrist rest -Separate media keys and volume rocker Con: -Actuation distance is a bit shallow for me -Only available with blue switches I always thought that gaming mechanical keyboards were overpriced, so the Apex 5 is a great keyboard by value alone. It’s sturdy and hefty with a metal body. It has a volume rocker, a single button media control, and customizable OLED screen. Unlike other “hybrid” keyboards, this is a true clicky blue mechanical switch but with a membrane below it resulting in a softer feel while bottoming out. It feels good to type with, but for me personally (not being a great typist), the short actuation distance means a lot of accidental keys. I love the magnetic wrist rest. It could use a bit more cushion, but overall still comfortable. Lighting and profiles can be managed on the keyboard itself without needing to install any software. However that limits the amount of customizability greatly. Holding the media button for a few seconds gets you into the menus and using the OLED screen and rocker, you can assign a base color effect and add a reactive effect on top. Downloading the StreamEngine allows you to fully customize individual keys with various effects, change the keybinding, and easily edit macros. You can also change the OLED display with your own image and animation. For the lower price, you get a solid keyboard (with a good size wrist rest) that rivals other more expensive brands. Even though I prefer red or browns, these keys feel good when typing while having a softer bottoming out. Good for people that bottoms out each key press like me.

Going in to buying this keyboard, I was very intrigued about the hybrid mechanical switches used in this design. When I used it for the first time, I was a little surprised about how loud they were. In addition, my backspace key didn't work and the rgb on all the f switches and numbers 1-4 did not work

The SteelSeries - Apex 5 Wired Gaming Hybrid Mechanical Blue Switch Keyboard with RGB Back Lighting is a really great keyboard. I love this thing. This is my first venture into a serious gaming keyboard. So the first thing I noticed when I picked up the box was the weight of this keyboard. It certainly isn't a plastic keyboard. It is rugged. You don't want to rage quit a game and slam it down. It certainly has enough mass to do some damage. Pulling it out of the box, you really have the USB wired keyboard and the attachable wrist guard along with some instructions. The design is solid. This is not flimsy or weak at all, so it can stand a pounding from any gamer. I really like the way the wrist guard connects as well. The wrist guard connects to the keyboard magnetically. So you can easily remove it when you don't need it and reattach it when you do. No chance of breaking it moving it back on and off. Connectivity is easy. I plugged it into my Windows 10 machine and it was working within seconds. I did use it with my MacBook Air as well but I did need to use the USB to lightning adapter so this is required if you want to go that route. It even works with the PS4 so you are able to quick chat with the best of them. There are a couple of things that are noticeable that could be great or could be annoying depending on how you look at it. So I don't really classify these as pros or cons but you should be aware of them. First off, when you type on the keyboard, remember that it is a mechanical keyboard. It makes quite a bit of noise. It reminds me of the synthetic keyboard typing sound you hear after you give a response on an automated telephone call. It is that loud. Also when you type, the LED lights with flash outward in both directions after you strike a key. The LEDs are always flashing. Personally I think it is a great effect that just gives this keyboard an extra special feel. But I could see how it might be distracting to some. The keyboard has other nice features. You can have different profiles saved on the keyboard so you can adjust it by user or by game to suite your needs. It also has backlit keys for use in all lighting conditions. All in all, I am very happy with this keyboard. I love the feel for gaming and the look of it is outstanding. I recommend this keyboard to anyone looking for a gaming keyboard.

Its works as a keyboard should, to a degree. However due to being mechanical, I expect better interfacing. The actual input will engage prior to the mechanical portion engaging leading to unintended keystrokes just by simply having some weight on the key itself. Very annoying.

This keyboard screams high quality! As soon as I opened the package the weight and the feeling were noticeable. I hooked it up to my pc, it recognized it right away. I did need to go download the software from their site, but was simple enough. Paired w app loved changing the colors and keystroke actions. Meaning press a key and whole row lights up like a laser. Really cool. It’s actually really quiet for being mechanical, they are subdued but minimal sound. Playing games with keyboard, was extremely fast and responsive. I loved the little Oled screening keyboard that showed in game stats etc ! Overall great keyboard!

Had the keyboard for 2 years and I can say that I liked it at first. Now it is absolute garbage. Key caps keep coming off, even replacing the caps didn't fix the issue. Something is wrong with these switches and I am out of the protection window. Junk product and I probably wont buy steelseries again if they are going to just last 2 years. Planned obsolescence is bs

These keyboards have some type of programming issue that makes them reboot like crazy. I’ve gone through 4 of them and finally switched to Corsair which doesn’t have the RGB responsiveness but doesn’t reboot every two seconds.
