A Worthy choice with a couple quirks
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had the Steelseries Arctis 7 for a long time before deciding to try out this new Arctis Nova 7. This is definitely the successor to that older headset that made me a Steelseries fan. Compared to the old 7 the Nova is substantially more comfortable, sounds better, and has nice improvements such as USB-C for charging and Bluetooth capability that allows simultaneous use with game sound. It really is a very nice upgrade in nearly every way. My biggest complaint is the microphone has a different shape that makes it a bit harder to push back into its space within the left ear cup and no longer has the red LED that would indicate it was muted. Otherwise, the controls are mostly intuitive with volume wheel and the mute button on the left side and Chat/Audio mix wheel and combo power/Bluetooth on the other. That combo button is frustrating to use, it is not immediately evident how to even turn off the headset because holding it down like I do with most other devices of the like just turns on Bluetooth pairing instead. You can run the included cable to make it a wired headset if you choose or use the 2.4Ghz USB-C based dongle for wireless play on PC, PS4/5, Switch, or mobile. Thankfully the dongle can also be used with the USB-C to USB-A extension cable to avoid covering up the USB-A port on the front of the PS5 with the dongle itself which is another unfortunate negative. Lastly it includes a USB-C charging cable rounding out the accessories in the box. The old gen headset used their “ski headband” which I found very comfortable although I had to use it on its largest possible adjustment for my big dome. The Nova has evolved that design with a stretchy inner band that hooks onto a few different points and the earcups can also be adjusted in or out of the headband independently. This makes it even easier to get a proper fit for us large headed individuals and is extraordinarily comfortable. I can wear it for many hours and barely notice it’s there and that is perhaps the most important aspect of a headset for me outside of pure sound quality. I like being able to sync up my iPhone to it to be able to hear any important notifications or take a call, and the mic is more than up to the task for both calls and game chat. I am told it sounds clear and crisp. Sound quality is very good, I can hear everything around me and 3D audio on PS5 is in full effect. I’ve heard both better and worse in headsets but again compared to the older Arctis 7 it is an improvement. Cap it all off with all day battery life and it’s a very solid and compelling choice. I am happy with it and recommend it.

Excellent all-around gaming headset
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I used the arctis 5 in the past, lost it when moving, so I was curious about this model. The product stack is a bit confusing for these headsets, with the pro at the top and 3 other variants each with different features. I grabbed this as the price is about right, and I'm very happy. So what does the arctis nova 7 do that sets is apart from other similar cans? - simultaneous bluetooth and wireless pairing - on the fly audio mix between game and chat - one of the best mics in the game - usb-c dongle - usb-c fast charging - excellent batter life You can easily pair this to two devices, it switches seamlessly and the audio quality over bluetooth is still quite good, tho the wireless is obviously better. The usb-c dongle is great if you have a modern mobo or case with type-c I/O (i do). I love how small the dongle is as it can sit flush with your case or rear IO. It's a minor thing but I quite like it. The audio mix wheel is easily the standout feature here, and it's what the arctis is probably most known for. There's a wheel on the right earcup that lets you adjust your volume between your game and your chat app of choice. How useful this is to you will definitely depend on your day to day use, but I find myself using this pretty frequently as I play a good mix of esports tittles and single-player games. It's really nice to not have to tab out of your game and adjust the windows audio slider. It's a convenience thing and I really love it. Only downside is that you need the steelseries GG software installed (more bloat), and once you have it set up the software makes an absolute mess of your audio devices. There are 4 different devices added to windows (2 headsets, and 2 mics). This is a byproduct of how steelseries software performs it's audio mixing magic, and you can manually hide any of the devices as you wish, but it's pretty confusing to look at IMO. Still it's worth it for the convenience. the build quality is good, very lightweight and comfortable. The headband design is one of my favorite, a piece of material, in this case a kind of faux leather, that's a bit shorter than the band itself attaches to a series of pegs on the headset allowing you to increase or decrease the tension as you want. I attached mine to the bottom-most pegs to increase the clamping force of the headset. Even set this way on the tightest setting the clamping force is still a bit loose for my taste. Still very comfortable tho. The earcups are very comfortable too, super soft and easy to wear for long periods of time even with glasses. They're all very cool to wear so you're not going to get sweaty wearing these ... unless you're being a sweaty gamer. The mic is fantastic, although I don't really trust how flimsy it feels. Tuning the mic in the software will make it sound much better than stock EQ. The headphones themselves sound great. I'm not an audiophile, and wouldn't really buy audiophile-grade headphones for gaming anyway, but still these are very good. Bass is rich and deep without being muddy. The highs are equally clean. Midrange is where I feel this set is maybe a little bit weak, but again you can set a custom EQ in the gg software and get outstanding results. I think these are great for anything really - voip, gaming, music, movies whatever, it all sounds very good. No complaints. Having said all of these nice things about this headset, what exactly don't I like? Mostly the control scheme. The left headset has a volume wheel, a mic mute button, 3.5mm jack, and your retractable mic. These controls just feel bad. The earcups have a kind of stepped design which makes me fumble around for the right control. I don't know it just doesn't feel intuitive. This holds true for the right earcup as well which has your audio mix wheel, power button, bluetooth paring button and type-c charging port. I have yet to successfully power on the headset blindly, I always have to take it off and look for the button. The dark black matte finish doesn't help here, as everything just kind of blends together into an indistinguishable mess. I also don't like the software. You can use this as a plug and play headset out of the box, but to get the features you're paying for and to make the sound quality of the mic and headset better you NEED to install it. It would be nice if you could save your settings to the headset and uninstall the software, but you can't. You can back up your settings to the cloud, which requires creating a steelseries account, but I don't like that. It seems like every peripheral these days comes with it's own bloated software that is mandatory for accessing any advanced features, this is no different. I find the account requirement to be particularly egregious though, as I'm really fond of giving up me email information just so yet another company can harass me with endless marketing. What are you gonna do tho? Overall I think this is a very good set of headphones. At this price point I feel like it should have included ANC, but I'm not mad about it. I pretty regularly have to talk to someone in the house while I have my headset on and ANC would definitely make that more difficult, but whatever. I still think this is a great headset and a pretty good value. Yeah these are great.

Quality Sound, Quality Build
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My family seems to be on an endless search for a durable, great sounding gaming headset. I have 3 sons that seem to go through their headsets quickly for some reason. After, using these Nova 7s for a while I think this might be the one, they settle on. As soon as you take these out of the box, you can feel it’s heft, not in a bad way. Not like it’s going to weigh on the crown of you head and cause discomfort, but like it’s a quality product. The earcups are nicely padded, the band and outside of the cups are sturdy and allow for flexibility for a great fit. The knobs, I love that they aren’t buttons, for sound volume control are great and easy to feel. The power and Bluetooth buttons are easy to use as well, as is the mic mute button. After using this headset for a few long gaming sessions, I can say that they are very comfortable. No heating of the ears for me, or discomfort around or on the top of the head. The only thing that I am a little unsure about as far as build goes is the retractable mic. I haven’t decided if I feel like this is a great way to make sure that the mic stays safe when not using it, or if this will be a weak point that might fail from use, I am hoping the former. The SteelSeries GG software offers an incredible amount of customization to an already stellar sounding headphones and mic. Even when tuning the Spatial Audio setting, I love how you can set the separation of the 7 areas and chose to focus on Immersion of Performance. The software can be a little overwhelming with the number of options, but I would recommend with using some of their preset configurations as they have some for just about every popular game on the market. Then, when you have time delve into the software and really make the sound your own. This is a phenomenal gaming headset. Great build quality and comfort, impressive sound, and a quality mic really make for a solid package any gamer would be happy with. The only thing that some might not like is the lack of any RGB lights, or that the mic doesn’t mute when you push it back into the headset, you need to make sure to click that mute button. Neither one of those were issues for my use case, but I could see how some might be deterred by them. If you are fine with those two things then these are an easy recommendation.
