As far as I could tell, in other environments, or if I had to hold my lap top on my lap or a soft, spongy surface it woud be useful

An associate helped me look at a couple of different options. I chose this and I am extremely happy with it. As the computer is charging I plug the Dual Fan Chill Mat into the computer and it does the trick and keeps it cool. Love it!

A good buy...

Now after having it for awhile it does help mitigate the heating issues I was having my laptop. At this price (~ $20) I can say I am happy with my purchase.

The fan db level is a lil loud but able to drown it out as white noise

good for my lenovo think pad

Robust fans, lightweight and affordable.

I can slide it into my backpack with my new MSI Delta 15 and not feel the extra weight. The fans are strong and relatively quiet, but not silent. Definitely helps keep air flowing around my Delta, even though the laptop has side vents. I recommend this cooler at this price.
