It plugs into your USB drive and keeps your laptop cool. When I started working full time at home, I worried about my laptop being on most of the day. During the "Office hours" for work. Then after hours for movies, balancing check book and surfing the net. It works perfectly. The mat is plastic and supports the laptop whether its on my desk or balancing on my knees.
