It allows for it to be turned vertical or horizontal. There is a slot to hold the Apple Pencil too. Not heavy duty, but perfect for college or office use.

As for protection it is good but not excellent. The outside cover is great. The inside cover is bit shallow that does not hold the ipad very tigh.
