    Good basic, compact air conditioner

This TCL 7000 BTU Smart Portable Air Conditioner is a good, basic air conditioner that cools or dehumidifies rooms as large as 300 square feet. Its major benefit is its compact size, which allows it to be rolled into place near a window and not take up much space at all. At about 50 pounds in weight, it is easy to lift or roll. Pros: • Compact size is great for rooms without much space, but cools larger rooms • Two filters easy to clean • Functions work great • Good remote control • App works well to control the unit Cons: • Only 2 fan speeds: somewhat loud and louder • Mounting weatherstripping not enough for wide/tall windows • App does not pair to Google Home without Matter • Matter pairing doesn't give all functions This TCL unit does a great job cooling down a room, and the hose that comes with it is quite long, meaning it can be placed somewhat further away from a window than you might expect. I've used the unit for a week now, and found it quite good. Setup was fairly easy, and the air conditioner comes with a 3-panel baffle to put in your window that can extend from 20.5 to about 60 inches. The kit also includes some weatherstripping for the top of the window frame and bottom of the window itself, and some thicker foam for tucking into the open portion where the lower window is raised above the upper pane's frame. My window is 48 inches wide, and I was disappointed to find that the included weatherstripping did not extend the to 48 inches. I ended up having to get some more from a nearby store. If you're looking for basic cooling with a remote control and app support, you'll find it here. The unit is easy to use with the included remote or pair and control with the Smart Life app the company wants you to use. I'm not sure why they don't use the TCL Home app that most of their other appliances use. That said, this is not a feature-rich, customizable appliance. You get 2 fan speeds, which they call low and high, but I would call medium and high. There are 3 modes: fan, dehumidify, and cool. There is a sleep timer you can set from 30 minutes to 24 hours. That's about it. And speaking of the app, the functions are all controllable within, but pairing with Google Home is not possible, because the app shows up as not having any compatible devices. This air conditioner does come with a Matter QR code on the side, and after a few tries, I was able to get it set up with Matter within Google home, but the only functionality present was On/Off and fan speed, no temperature control. So that means I use the app to control the device and if I want to add it to Google Home routines, I can turn it on or off only. I assume (and hope) the missing functionality will be added in a future software/firmware update. Until then, I'm satisfied with the current app functionality and remote control. Bottom line: if you're looking for a compact, portable air conditioner to cool a space and offer some remote/app control, this is an excellent choice. If you'd like a more premium experience with multiple fan speeds and full-featured smart home integration, look elsewhere.

it’s a good A/C unit with some issues

This TCL 7000 BTU Smart Portable Air Conditioner a fairly powerful portable AC with a few nice features and some flaws. While unboxing, the packaging got stuck in top of box making it more difficult than it should have been to unpack. Contents included the A/C unit, the venting tube, the window insert, some foam for sealing the window, some miscellaneous mounting screws and the instructions. Setting up the A/C wasn’t really plug & play. It comes with a 3-part window insert that can fill somewhat large vertical openings. If you have a smaller window, like me, you may need to sawcut the middle piece to get the exhaust connection to fit. Instructions say to cut the piece with the hole but that wouldn’t clear the blockage. I had to do this. Not difficult if you have the tools. The window insert is just 3 pieces of white vinyl. It would be nice if they had some rubber on the edges to create a better seal and keep it from sliding. There is some foam included in the box for sealing openings, but this foam is typically not very durable. Instructions say it needs 18” of clearance on all sides to function properly. That is a lot of space in a small house. In terms of use, the controls on the unit are fairly clean. They are in a flat panel that gives no physical feedback when they are pressed. You just get a beep. I was surprised that there are only 2 fan speeds. Most A/C’s I’ve used have 3. There are the typical 3 modes – Fan, Dehumidify and Cool. Sometimes, pressing a button doesn’t seem to do anything. Fan only is fairly quiet. Cool and dehumidify are both quite noisy. This might not be an issue in a basement or a larger room but it’s not great in a smaller room. The opening where the air comes out is covered by some louvers. These close when the unit is off preventing things from falling in. When on, they can either be stationary or move up and down to spread out the cool air. Fan strength is strong on high. The remote is very clean looking and functions well, even at a distance. Some of the icons are not obvious and it will take a little time to get used to. No removable bucket for water collection. You need to do a direct drain or drain from a plug at the bottom of the unit. This is my biggest issue with this unit. I would not get this for a carpeted room or for any room in which you wouldn’t want to get the floor wet. There should be a removable bucket like I’ve had in all the dehumidifiers I’ve owned. There is an app that you can download to control the A/C. I’ve tried to connect it to my A/C a bunch of different ways and tried the written troubleshooting instructions, but it is not working. I’m not sure what is going on, but I will try and contact customer support and get it resolved. Conclusion, as my title says, it’s a good A/C unit with some issues. Right now, it’s a bit too cold to use it consistently but it worked well for the 1/2 day I used it. I can’t say this is an outstanding, “must buy” product, but it should work fine for most people.

    Matter doesn’t Matter

This unit cools my bedroom quickly and seems like it will be able to move to my office when I need it to without much work. Make sure you pay attention to the instructions for app setup as it’s not supported in the TCL home app. There’s a sticker on the side for connecting with Matter ad Best Buy says it’s Home Kit compatible, but it won’t connect. I bought this because I wanted an AC that I can use in the Apple Home app, but it doesn’t connect. In 2025, this is extremely disappointing. It’s not whisper quiet but it’s not louder than any window air conditioner. The big benefit being that without half of the unit hanging out the window, it will last longer if drained and maintained properly.
