I was expecting to have to compromise a bit on picture quality on a $200 TV. But I've been thoroughly impressed by what this set can do. I actually needed a maximum 40" set for a particular space in a small entertainment center, and it's not like manufacturers are pouring resources into making flagship TV's at that size anymore. It was between the TCL and a couple other models, and that's it. I figured whatever I did was like picking my poison, but at least it'd be cheap. When I hooked it up, I was immediately surprised by how good it looked.. and that was before any adjustments. When I did bring out my trusty Spears & Munsil Blu-Ray setup disc, it passed every picture quality test including the most difficult ones... after some adjustments, of course. Even my much more expensive Sony XBR TV does not pass every test on this disc. Watching the demonstration material after the adjustments, the picture looked totally pristine. Other than the size, I'd be happy with this TV in my living room as a daily driver. I think it's a perfect bedroom TV. If you're curious, here's what I did to my settings for an accurate picture that passes all of the S&M tests: Movie mode (must be movie mode for accurate color) Dynamic contrast OFF Brightness: 52 Contrast: 65 Sharpness: 0 Color: 55 Color temp: Normal Everything else left as is. Keep in mind your set might be a little different. Also keep in mind that if you're not used to a TV that's set up properly (and this isn't even a pro setup, this is just basic stuff), it might initially look a little dull to you. But within minutes you'll probably realize how much more natural it looks, and less tiring for long periods of viewing. The only major changes from out of the box are movie mode, contrast and sharpness. The stock contrast and sharpness settings in particular are not only technically incorrect (as per the S&M disc), they give the out of box picture a harsh look that's easily tamed. A sharpness setting of 0 might seem odd to you, but this is a digital world - any setting above 0 adds picture details that are not really there. A 0 setting just gives you the un-messed-with picture being fed into the TV. I don't really notice much "dirty screen effect" either, which is something I've seen mentioned in pro reviews, and something I'm normally sensitive to. I don't think the screen uniformity is perfect, but it's definitely not a noticeable issue in normal viewing or even in panning shots, which is where you'd normally see it. There's no 120hz mode or motion interpolation or any of those fancy electronic effects in this TV... and that's fine by me. I just want to see a pure picture of whatever's being fed in to the TV. I turn all that stuff off on any TV I buy that has it anyway (like my Sony). This TV does have Roku built in for streaming, which means you get Netflix, Hulu, etc. (of course you need to subscribe to them individually). Pretty much like any modern smart TV. The interface is very simple and unlike some reviews I've read, I find it to be pretty smooth. Maybe there have been firmware updates since those reviews. (The TV did update its firmware as soon as I put it on my network.) The only real downside to this TV is the junky remote, which is a typical Roku remote. I guess they think you're only ever going to stream with this TV... but of course it can be used with a cable box, DVD/BD player, and whatever else. There's not even an attempt at any kind of universal remote with this TV - it's just Roku, meaning no channel number buttons, channel up/down, or lots of other buttons pretty much standard on TV remotes. If you want to use a cable box, you can obviously use your cable box remote (most of them can turn a TV on/off and control volume), but then you lose the TV's Roku functionality. You basically have to use two (or more) remotes to get full functionality from the TV, or you have to buy a separate universal remote. That is not a dealbreaker, just a minor annoyance from what is otherwise a great TV for the price. To think, the first 1080p LCD TV I bought 15 years ago cost literally 8 times the price, was about the same size, had no streaming at all and had terrible picture quality compared to this! Did I mention it cost 8 times as much?

    Good For What I Paid

For context, I paid less than $200 for this TV. The pros and cons are as follows: Pros: - Good Picture Quality - Turns On Fast - Decent Audio Quality (At Least Very Loud) - Roku’s Superb Smart TV System Cons: - Included Remote Sucks - Little Customization The TV has pretty good picture quality for what it is worth. I usually keep it on the “brightest” setting and was able to make out a decent amount of HBO’s Game of Thrones’ “Battle of Winterfell” (Google that scene if you don’t know why that is impressive). The screen won’t be winning any awards, but it is certainly very acceptable for the cost of one year of my bad fast food habits. Equally, the sound is not terrible either. The audio fills my bedroom (approx 150 sqft.) at about level 50-60. This TV can get very loud, and has capability of accepting a sound bar if it just doesn’t blow your skirt up enough with the stock audio. I really enjoy the Roku system for several key reasons: apps, screen mirroring, continuity. The system allows me to watch streaming content through apps, meaning I don’t need my phone with me to cast to the TV. This is useful for when I leave my house and want to leave something on to fill the home with sounds for my dogs, who I will usually leave a 10+ hr. video of nature sounds or something on for. Secondly, the screen mirroring is quick and relatively lag-free. It is good for things like taking over the screen and typing out favors to my wife, like if she will look around the room to see if I forgot my phone charger up there or something. Lastly, set-up is a breeze (where did that saying come from?) if you’ve set up a Roku before. Many of your preferences and things will carry over, making it a rather painless process. The bad, however, might make someone with enough budget want to skip this model. Customizing picture settings is confined to just “darkest, darker, dark, bright, brighter, brightest”. You can’t set a color scheme, contrast, or anything else. You can, however, do this for your antenna inputs, but not for your streaming content, which is what I use this TV 99% of the time for. Lastly, the remote kinda sucks. The buttons can get stuck together and depress when you press a different button, leading to weird outcomes. For example, I’ll press the middle button to select a YouTube video, and it’ll exit out of the YouTube app and show me the Sony streaming app like, “is this what you wanted? You wanted to download this, yes?”. Overall, if you have more budget than this model, you may want to go one step up. If this is cheap enough to keep your wallet from performing seppuku, then it’s a good model for the money. TLDR: Meh, move up if you can, if not it’s not bad.

Stream Xfinity Live TV Shows without a Cable Box

Bought this TV to put in a exercise room and really love it. So light and easy to set up. No need for a cable box, just internet. Lots of free shows to watch and an added bonus, if you are an Xfinity customer, you can get their beta app on the TV and stream live TV shows just like you would with a cable box! I was totally impressed with that. The TV itself has a great picture and the sound is fantastic. Easy access to settings. I would highly recommend this TV and it’s a good price too.

I shopped and read reviews for several weeks before purchasing this unit. I had a 40" size limit, so I didn't have a huge selection to choose from. The 2 TCL 40" models were my short list, and this one had better ratings. I also had more confidence in the Roku O/S than Android. Pluses: Easy set-up. Generally intuitive function layout. Good picture (at least when compared with what it was replacing). Sound levels are more than adequate and the resolution is very good--no problem with X is too soft, but X+1 is too loud. Three HDMI ports. Cons: WiFi only; no wired connection. Network connection doesn't auto-restore when turning the set back on. (There is a stand-by Off mode that keeps the connection active, but that wastes power for the time when you don't need all the associated functions left On. The free TCL channel app crashes consistently; I gave up trying to use it. The remote could be better; it is adequate, but I would really like a way to jump channels (in the Live TV app) instead of having to scroll through several hundred intervening channels. Occasionally, the navigation function will hang, preventing selection changes. You have to exit the current app and return to the home screen to restore proper operation.

I needed to replace an aging 720p tv as secondary TV (couch spudding/Netflixing). We are a Roku household so I wanted a smart TV with Roku. This TCL model fit the bill. And the price was very reasonable. It is 1080p and has built-in Roku. The display is pretty good, but off-center viewing gets very washed out. Setup was smooth. Overall I am pleased with this TV.

Excellent value, remote is not as responsive as a stand alone Roku player I have on a different tv so minus one star for that. Maybe the processor in the tv is a little slow--and occasionally when an app and program start, it takes awhile to get volume control. But it is nice to only have one remote! I got this and replaced a 22" tv I had mounted on the wall in my bedroom--that is a nice upgrade, and it weighs the same as the old tv so I didn't have to replace the bracket or anything for hanging it. There's a glowing plastic thing on the bottom of the tv that, in a sense, tells you when you're using the remote--it makes a dim nightlight for the room which is fine by me.

I absolutely love this TV! It is fabulous. Its picture is wonderful, It is very easy to set up and operate. You only need one remote control to switch between cable, live tv, DVD player, and game mode. It is so easy to change input sources. I originally purchased a $550 Samsung QLED TV but hated the picture when I got it. I watched many YouTube videos trying to get rid of the "soap opera" effect picture, but could not get the picture I wanted. Best Buy was fabulous. I returned the expensive Samsung and bought this wonderful TCL-Roku tv. I have had this tv for one week and could not be happier, I am so glad that my nephew recommended the TCL brand. I have been converted to TCL.

Being on a fixed income my wife and I thought we would see a big quality drop when we got away from the big brand (ie: BIG price) models and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of picture we have with this TV. The colors are bright and crisp. picture awesome and sound quality good and the set up was easy as well. It seamlessly integrated with our Netflix and hulu apps and since we are cord cutters who new nothing about Roku were surprised at the many free viewing options that has given us that we enjoy. Definitely a great purchase
