It’s very slow. The batteries that were included were garbage. Stopped working after 3 days. We got this for a early Christmas present for the kids. We were very disappointed. Besides these issues everything else was perfect.

When you are buying a new TV from a bargain brand like TCL and then opting for one of the least expensive models they sell, you probably expect to make a few compromises. So it's not a big surprise there are a pretty long list of them associated with TCL's new 40-inch Q3 series television (40Q35F), with built-in Fire TV. At this price you are not getting 4K (just "full HD" 1080p), no HDR, no local dimming or any of the hot new display technologies like OLED, mini LED, or mini RGB. There are no perfect blacks, or eye-popping contrast or special image manipulation produced by high-end color-processing chips. Or even support for Dolby Atmos or the latest WiFi 7 home networks (Just bare bones WiFi 5). Nope, this is just your basic "stick-it-in-the-kid's-bedroom-or-garage" TV. Still, it mostly gets the job done, with no fancy bells or whistles. And if that is all you need, and have a lot of patience (more on that later), you could do a lot worse than this TCL TV. That's mostly because of the picture quality, the main thing most people care about when buying a new TV. It is surprisingly good for this price. That's largely because TCL opted for a full-backlight QLED panel for this model, which produces a very bright, color-rich picture. QLED used to be a very premium feature not that long ago but now is apparently so inexpensive, it can be used on entry-level TVs. The technology results in more accurate and more vivid color than was possible in days before quantum dots. That's the Q in QLED. Image sharpness is also quite good, despite the fact this set does not support 4K or HDR. It turns out you don't need all that extra resolution to get a fairly crisp picture on a TV this small. Keep in mind however, that it will take a bit of work -- and patience -- to get the most out of this set, since, as far as I am concerned, the out-of-the box picture settings are not all that great. The first challenge in changing those settings is actually getting the settings menu to come up. There is a settings button on the remote but at first blush, it did not seem to do anything. When I pushed it, nothing happened...at least not right away. In fact, it took a good 10 seconds for the settings menu to appear. (This seems to vary depending on content but there is always a lag.) Even worse, when I finally got the settings menu to appear, and went to "Picture," all but one of the options for adjusting it was ghosted out. All I could do was change the backlight setting, which was not terribly useful. It took me some of time to figure out that you have to be watching something other than a menu page (live, HDMI or streaming content -- there are 2 HDMI ports and one composite) before you can access the full menu of picture adjusting options. And yes, there is still a long lag before it finally comes up. As for the best settings in "Standard" picture mode, I recommend you crank down the backlight to about 50 percent, crank up the sharpness and turn off all the noise reduction and edge enhancement options (in advance settings) I think those "features" make the picture look a bit fuzzy. This also dials back the overly-bright gray-blacks a bit (one problem with a full backlight) and produces a sharper, more color-saturated, contrasty picture. Image settings are very subjective and you might prefer a brighter picture if the TV is in a very bright room. If so, use higher backlight or brightness settings. This LED screen can get very bright but is not very forgiving if watching it from any angle except straight-on. Colors and contrast wash out rapidly as you move further to the side, which is typical of many LED panels. Setup on the TV was fairly simple , especially if you are familiar with Amazon Fire TV devices and remotes. Just use the QR codes that pops up on the screen after you first turn on the TV. The camera on your smart phone will pull the proper web sites to get information necessary to connect to your wifi network and your existing Amazon account. It also will configure the menu of this version of Fire TV to match whatever you have on other Fire TVs in your house. You will still have to sign in to any paid streaming services however. The only downside to this setup process was the always mandatory software update, which seemed to go on a lot longer than you would expect. (More patience required) Fire TV updated repeatedly, and there were some firmware updates to the TV as well. It took the better part of an hour to get it all done. One notable plus on this TV is the sound, which is pretty loud and easy to hear. That means you don't have to buy a soundbar to hear it, but some still may go for that option if they want richer, more full bodied sound. TCL shows Dolby audio support for this TV on the box but there are no settings to indicate it is there, or to adjust it. Just DTS TruSurround, a competing simulated surround sound technology, that can be turned on or off. I did not find it all that compelling since it makes voices harder to hear. As for the remote, well, it is sort of a jumbo sized version of the one that comes with all Fire TV devices, but with the buttons rearranged. That's annoying, but if you can deal with that, and are already a Fire TV user, this remote will seem pretty familiar. It has all the same buttons along with some new ones for TV functions and streaming services. There is also a built-in Amazon Alexa microphone for issuing voice commands (use the blue button), to search or launch streaming services. Just be aware this is not the most responsive TV around. There is often a noticeable lag between the time you press any button the on the remote and something happening. More so than any TV I have used in recent memory. Let's just say they did not use the fastest chips to handle basic functionality, or Fire TV. More patience required. Still, this is surprisingly capable performer for the price, with good picture quality and all the functionality of a Fire TV built in. It may not respond as quickly as you like and does not have all the latest tech. But it is proof that older tech is more than good enough most of the time on a set this small.

TCL’s 40” Q35F is an okay TV for someone that might be on a budget. Right when you carry the box before opening it, you already know it’s lightweight. Therefore mounting it on the wall, should you prefer it, won’t be an issue. The tv, itself, looks great. It’s nice and sleek with the bevels being very minimal. The remote has a nice and simple layout making it easy for operation. Though it may not look as expensive as the bigger tv’s where the screens are made of gorilla glass or where the remote looks like it’s going to cost hundreds of dollars to replace, it’s nice for its price point. The picture quality is very nice considering it’s a 1080p tv. This is probably because of it having QLED technology. The colors are nice and bright, but, of course, let’s not forget, this is not a 4K tv. However, you don’t really need a tv with 4K resolution if your tv is 40”. Especially if it’s going to be a tv for a bedroom or a small room, a 1080p tv should suffice. Now, regarding its resolution; again, no issues with the picture quality, when I connected my laptop, it seemed like its resolution isn’t the same as the tv’s. The edge of the laptop’s screen is outside the screen of the tv. I connected our Google TV, and it was the same. I even connected a Blu-ray player, and it was the same. The worst part is, I don’t think there’s a fix for this issue. I guess TCL made this tv strictly for watching tv via cable. It seems like anything attached to it doesn’t work properly as far as resolution goes. As far as the sound goes, let’s just say I’m glad I have a sound bar that I can use to attach to it. The sound quality, compared to the other tv’s I’ve had, is pretty bad. It has very minimal lows while the mids and highs seem to be up. I’m under the impression that TCL made this tv expecting people to buy sound bars. Again, if you’re on a budget, this would be an okay tv. It seems you can only use this for watching tv. Otherwise, anything you attach to it won’t show correctly. If you’re planning on buying this, save up for a sound bar as well. You’re gonna want one.

Fantastic QLED Color and Smart Features

This TCL 40-inch Q35F TV is a fantastic choice for a secondary room or office. The integration of QLED technology at this price point is remarkable; the colors are rich and bright, far exceeding what I expected from a 1080p set. The built-in Fire TV platform is snappy and easy to navigate. The voice remote with Alexa makes jumping straight into Netflix or Disney+ effortless, which is a huge convenience. While it’s not a high-end 4K model, the combination of excellent QLED color and the seamless smart TV interface makes it an unbeatable value.
