Smart appliances are a stupid idea.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this new, in box from the store. Easy assembly and setup. The price was right (~$250, on sale). However... The point of this purchase was to have a large 4k screen for streaming video from my laptop. I noticed on the box that it was a "smart" tv, but didn't realize that the smartness of this product was nonnegotiable. Part of the setup was _mandatory_ connection to my wifi. There are so many ways for things to get hacked nowadays that you should ALWAYS be allowed to bypass the so-called "smart" features of a new appliance. My laptop is secure and I have an antivirus suite to keep it that way. This TV??? Who knows? As if proving my point, the TV has needed to install an update every single day so far, except for one. Who sells a TV that makes you wait 5-7 minutes after turning it on before you can watch it? Stupid. Will the updates ever end? Not likely. Stupid. Like I said, the assembly and setup were quick and easy. The TV itself has an acceptable aesthetic. The picture is not amazing, but is totally acceptable given the price. If I wind up returning this item, it will be because of the above mentioned nonsense.

Silly Remote ‘ Terrible Audio Options ‘ Few Apps
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros: 1- The channels can be nicely organized once you figure out how to use the right button combinations. 2- The display is OK and adjustable. 3- Voice commands seem to work fine for searching for apps (very limited apps available ‘ see cons). Cons: Those who designed this TV – its software and its remote – likely spent little time using this TV. Or maybe they think a TV is just something you hang on a wall and do very little interaction with. Very disappointed in this TCL / android product and will be returning to store for the reasons below. 1- No mute button – SERIOUSLY?? To mute the sound, they say in the manual to press and hold the volume “-” button for 3 seconds. OOOOOH! Yes, that adjusts the volume down and then you have to adjust it back up. I guess we are all supposed to just love those loud obnoxious commercials. 2- No audio equalizer – SERIOUSLY?? No built in equalizer for adjusting the systems audio frequencies. 3- BOOM BOOM BOOM – again, SERIOUSLY?? Several audio presets, but ALL produce infrasonic low frequency booming. VERY annoying, unless you like having your whole house start rumbling every few minutes. If using the tvs speakers, it sounds like a tiny subwoofer in a plastic tube – terrible. If using the audio out jack, you get the infrasonic rumbling from whatever audio source that contains them. See apps note below. 4- No time display – again, SERIOUSLY?? Do you folks EVER actually watch TV? To get the current time, you MUST switch to and navigate around on the home screen, or 3 clicks deep on the info button, or even more clicks to get to the EPG (Electronic Program Guide) screen. See apps note below. 5- Tiny ‘VERY Limited’ Remote… Another high value button missing on this RIDICULOUS remote – besides the mute and time display buttons – is an EPG button. You can get to this valuable info screen, but it is 3 levels deep and 6 clicks away. Even though this remote is tiny, they still could have EASILY fit 15 more buttons on it. Guess they were going for a ROKU style remote, or maybe an air mouse style remote – but just ended up with an insulting user interaction. 6- I was excited to have an Android based smart TV – thinking of all the apps I could customize it with; BUT the Android apps for TVs are very limited. The Android apps available for smart phones are not the same as the Android apps used for an Android TV. There are Android apps to get current time on the screen, but NONE of them work on this TV. There are Android apps to equalize ‘ adjust the audio frequencies, but again, NONE of them work on this TV. 7- As soon as this TV warmed up, there was a distinct terrible smell. Some plastics – when they warm up – can produce bad fumes ‘ smells, and are especially unhealthy in small closed spaces – like most bedrooms. This smell seems to have dissipated after a couple weeks of use. 8- Now after 3 weeks, the remote has a very long response delay. I ran across one site that said to check TV’s software version – because there was an update that fixed a virus issue. So the first thing I did after getting tv online was update the software – took close to a gig of cell data. This issue appeared several days after last online connection, so more likely a hardware issue (than a virus / software issue). 9- The included media player works with a USB drive, but you have to repeatedly reset the sort order of your files, and the user interaction options are VERY limited. So limited and annoying that you are going to want to connect a laptop and use a real media player instead. Cons Summary … Make sure to see what kind of remote is included with your TV. If it is just a tiny thing with maybe 12 buttons, then definitely look elsewhere. And IF you really want an Android TV, then I would wait till 2022, or else make sure it is a top brand that is not going to insult you with significant limitations.

Disappointed

Maybe because I thought I was buying the TCL Roku model. Sound is better than Vizio. Regular channel shows like Stargate SG-1 and Magnum PI, also fuzzy. News and updated shows are OK. If you just need a basic TV and you don't care about the details this is the one.

bad speakers...otherwise ok.

There is a known problem with the speakers and its "Leveling" setting causing distortion. It works for a day or two and then speakers start to distort again... They needs to be a firmware update or replace speakers under recall... refresh rate is NOT 120... it is 60

Youtube 4k 60fps stuttering playback
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.The picture quality on this tv is great and all but every time I watch a 4k youtube video, there are noticeable frame drops. It's definitely not my internet because its not buffering and I have my 5ghz router directly behind the TV. I have 100 mbps internet so its more than enough for streaming 4k content. It seems to me the tv processor or the android software cant handle 4k streaming on youtube which shouldn't be the case for a tv that can output 4k. Or maybe it could be the clear motion index feature that is out of sync with 4k youtube playback framerate? I'm strongly considering returning this tv which is a shame because the price is great! Hopefully a firmware update can fix this? And maybe add the option to disable clear motion index if thats the problem.

TCL breached. My info compromised

Once TCL received notification, the company quickly took steps to investigate, thoroughly test, develop patches, and implement a plan to send updates to resolve the matter. Picture is Bad, Android TV laggy

Then the other night the screen was 50% darker than usual with 100% brightness on. Wish this TV worked better but they have some kinks to work out with Android TCLs.

Didn't turn on right out of the box.

Tried different batteries in remote and connecting and power cycling. Nothing in the user manual to trouble shoot this. Had to search up complicated fix video on how to fix this. Brand new TV shouldn't require to me to Youtube solutions on to start up. Pay a little extra and get a Samsung. Returning it

Backlight Issue

The TV went out 4 days after the warranty expired. So out the cost of the TV and the cost of the warranty. Screen went out from what I can tell it's a common issue with this tv to have a LED go out in a strip of LEDs which causes the rest to shut off leaving the screen dark unable to see anything. Geek squad support was unable to assist due to the warranty expiring just days before the tv went out. Would not recommend the tv or the 2 year warranty.

DEPTH IS WRONG

The specifications state that this TV has a "Product Depth With Stand: 8.4 inches" which is NOT true. It is actually around 13 inches. I bought this for my TV mantle and it does not fit. I hauled it across Manhattan and would have never purchased if the website had not been inaccurate. Customer service has not done anything to rectify the situation.
