Takes forever to turn on (and off), the display leaves much to be desired, the userface is slow and clunky, etc. Sound quality was alright.

VARY BAD SOUND

I WOULDNT RECOMMEND TO BUY THIS Tv.

Dead Pixels Out of the Box

Took a few hours and another hour talking to a tech support rep. It's the 50" TCL 5 series 50S535. Dead pixels in the upper right corner of the TV. Also the DVD player, the Bose sound bar I had, and over the air TV worked just fine except for the pixels. However couldn't get DirecTV hookup to work - message kept saying "no signal is it turned on" with no place to respond. Very poor on a brand new TV. Will see how Best Buy responds tomorrow how that review will unfold.

A great TV, especially for the money!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Right out of the box, I was very impressed with everything about this TV. It feels decently well built, thanks metal feet, a metal chin, and flat edge-to-edge glass screen. These three things also serve to make the TV look pretty good as well! Additionally, the feet have a plastic cover in the rear for you to run cables through to keep everything tidy. My only downside with the appearance/build of the TV are the fact that the feet are so along and are located near the very edges of the TV, meaning it takes quite a bit of room on your entertainment center. The picture quality - especially for the price - is just outstanding! Out of the box, the colors just pop and look vibrant, but not oversaturated. I highly recommend setting the Dolby Vision viewing mode to dark, as its definitely a little more accurate that the brighter viewing modes. (If you're wondering, I use my 16 inch MacBook Pro display as general reference for color accuracy because it covers a variety of color standards with great accuracy) The local dimming feature is wonderful addition to the TV, especially for dark room viewing. It makes dealing with letterboxes (the black bars on some movies) so much more tolerable even in dark rooms, and I was honestly shocked as to how well the screen kept most areas of the display completely black at times. One weakness of the set is that it doesn't have a particularly high peak brightness, meaning that it definitely won't offer the best HDR experience possible. That said, it gets bight enough in most cases to still be able to appreciate HDR content to some extent. Lastly, I'd like to talk about the software, which is Roku OS. Roku continues to impress me with how well it performs and simple it is to use. While I still prefer my Apple TV for the overall experience, its hard to fault Roku for anything because there are very few shortcomings. I would argue that Roku is hands down the most simple, straight forward, and welcoming platform for people new to smart TVs, and I couldn't be more glad to have it built into this TV. (To be clear, I have owned a fire stick and Chromecast, and have limited experience with android TV) All in all, this TCL is a great TV, and when you think about the cost, it's even better for the money. You'd be hard pressed to find any other TVs around this size and price that come even remotely close in terms of functionality and support for formats and features. Provided I don't have any reliability issues, I don't see why the next TV I buy wouldn't be a TCL.

A BadBuy from BestBuy

Brilliant picture quality, sufficiently bright for a normally lit room, good feature set, and many advanced features such as a Quantum Dot FALD display, well controlled and integrated dimming zones. THE BAD: Unreliable. My screen developed a one inch deep magenta bar across the top of the screen just after it’s warranty expired. Constantly lost CEC handshake with HDMI attached devices. Roku software frequently broke apps after updating. TV died with no warning, would not turn on, after 2 years and 7 months of use. One of the best looking pictures i’ve seen on any TV, not just in this price range, but short life and dicey quality control and/or build quality make this a BadBuy.

In cases like this, if you purchased an extended warranty, you may want to reach out to see if you can file a warranty claim through the extended warranty company. Furthermore, if you purchased using a credit card, some credit card companies also provide additional coverage. WARNING— ROKU no longer has YouTube TV!

Spend your money elsewhere

Fun to Watch, Inexpensive to Own!

Once that is done, the color and clarity are excellent! When considering the purchase price, it is an astounding bargain! This is my fourth TCL television and I have had no problems with any of the sets. My oldest one is 6 years old. Sure you can spend more but its hard to imagine getting more bang for your buck. Buy it, adjust the picture, start a 4k movie and take a journey! Its fun to watch!
